My Yorkie won't play with anything :( I just got my new baby and he will be two this November. I bought him a bunch of toys but he doesn't seem to want to play with any of them. He played fetch with this little ring I bought him exactly two times and then he was done with it. He won't touch the rubber bone I got him to chew on and he won't pick up any of his stuffed toys. He's afraid of the balls I got him because they have little bells in them. The only time he'll play is with me and with me hands like he'll chase them and stuff. I was wondering if this is normal? Are there any particular kind of toys that the grown up yorkies really seem to like? I thought maybe if I had more toys in his pen that he liked he'd be happier there while I was gone. Any ideas would be wonderful! Thanks! |
is your baby neutered? I only ask that because I have one that just had his 5th birthaday. He would not ever play. not even with me. all he wanted to do was sit on my lap. Until......... he was neutered. He plays now. it totally changed him. |
It might just tke him a little time to adjust. Nothing smells familiar. I'm sure in time he will pick a favorite. Meanwhile you could try tieing a knot in an old pair of socks, or a small towel. Mine love the home made toys the best. |
you say he chases and plays with your hands.. try putting a sock over your hand. just and idea. |
He was nuetered right before I got him so he's been neutered coming up on three weeks now. I will try the sock idea, I know he's playful just only seems to be playful when I'm with him and I'd like him to be happier when he has to be by himself for an hour or so... |
My maltese never plays with toys either. He plays with my other dogs really well and is very playful but he just won't play with any toys. All the others play with toys, he is the only one that won't. I hope someday he will start playing with his toys but atleast he has someone to keep him company and play with all day long. |
Toys? Depends on their personality, I think. I have two Yorkies, sisters from the same litter. Lucy plays with toys all the time, and Daisy rarely does. But Daisy does other silly, fun things...just personality, I guess! |
I finally found somethign he likes! Socks! Of all things, just take them and tie them in a knot and he loves to chew on them! I think I figured out what his issue was before. I think all the other toys I had for him were too hard and that was why he didn't like them. I guess chewing on them hurt his mouth or something...anyway, now that I figured out that he likes soft stuff I made hima bunch of sock toys and a pantyhose ball and he's playing like a little puppy now, its SO cute! :) |
Gidget will be two years old in February and she has just started playing with toys. The other two are always playing and I felt so sorry for her, but now, she plays with toys just like the other two. |
Yorkies and Toys Fun coincidence to your story - my 8-year old Daisy never really played with toys, but I just bought a little, soft rubber, squeaky-toy ball that she can carry in her mouth, and for days she has been racing around and playing with it as if she's a puppy. You just never know!:aimeeyork |
My dog never liked rubber toys, no matter the size or shape, he just sniffs them and loses interest instantly... maybe try rolling a bottle cap? Pepper plays with that by himself. After trying different balls I thought he wasn't interested in hasing balls as weel until I came across tiny tennis balls and he liked them. He likes squeaky toys but doesn't really by himself with them, he always brings them to me and starts bugging... His stuffed animals lie in the basket until I start playing with him, then he starts bringing them out, one by one. |
Chlesea likes socks too. You can also put nutrical in his plastic toy so he will start sniff and chew them, |
Oscar was never good at entertaining himself when he was a young puppy either - we had toys galore but he didn't seem to know how to play alone with them. His favorite game was chasing/finding my hands (I do the sock over the hand too). It wasn't until Ruthie came along that he started playing with toys with her and started playing alone more. Ruthie is sooo good at playing by herself with her toys and I think Oscar saw she was playing with HIS toys and decided to get in on the fun. All dogs are different - and like someone else suggested, it may just be that it's a new environment and he's not feeling like he's 'home' yet. I'm sure in time he'll start to become more playful. Definitely try the sock thing though and other home made toys rather than spending a fortune trying to find "THE" right toy that he'll actually play with! |
Jackson is this way. He only likes super-soft toys. Beanie babies are his favorite...especially the ones with that really silky fur. Glad you found some toys that were a hit! |

I remember when I first brought Chloe home, I went nuts buying toys, the only one she liked then was a cat foam ball, printed like a soccer ball. I have to watch when she plays with it, just in case she would bite a piece off (which she never did) but most any toys you would not leave with her when she was alone-even dog toys! the hard nyla bones are ok but she never liked them anyway. When I decided to get Sissy it was so Chloe would be happier when she was home alone. She hated it when I left without her. She still would rather leave with me everytime I go out but she is not miserable when I don't. Maybe it is a Yorkie thing to be sad when Mommys are gone. At any rate I wanted to ask you if I understood correctly. You said he was 2? 2 years old? when you got him? If this is so, maybe no one ever played with him before you got him so he may not know how. Chloe is afraid to walk behind a couch or under a table. Something happened before my house, she won't tell me what but I was not the only one that realized this. Sissy will take her stuff and run like heck behind the couch then peek out at Chloe like she is saying, I know you can't it back now, na na na na na na....... Once Sissy joined us, they liked all the toys, but only when the other sister had one!:D Just about a month ago, they learned how to play tug of war. They like to do this best with one of my socks tho..... So much for my investment in the canine toy companies!! Keep playing with different things with him and he will catch on. I also liked the sock on your hand idea someone mentioned - Great idea:thumbup: |
