Safe Treats Hi All. I am a recently new Yorkie owner and have been spoiling my baby with all types of toys and treats. I found that Raw Hide sticks keep her busy for hours and she just loves them, but I have also noticed that she sometimes has difficulty going potty. I am assuming the two are related. I am wondering if raw hide is to hard on a puppy's digestive tract?? Any suggestions of treats to avoid or replace the raw hides with?? She just loves them, and I love the free time :) I have read many posts about these bully sticks...what exactly do they look like, I don't think I have ever seen them. :animal-pa |
Stump loooooves Bully Sticks, I get him Flossies (i dont know if these are considered bully sticks) but they look like a Spring and you can buy them at pet stores. |
I buy the bully sticks at Petsmart they are great and are supposed to be 100% digestible and my pup loves them.... |
I read somewhere that its not good for a puppies digestive system or the stomach. |

I saw pig ears in the store. Are they o.k. for yorkies? |
i was wondering that too... or is it considered a rawhide?? |
Bully Sticks Rock!!! I can actually check e-mail without having to entertain Sophie! They are stinky though and I would be interested to find out what they are made of! |
i thought they were bull weenies  |
Yes, everyone has been saying they're made of bull penises  |

LADIES PLEASE!!!! NO PIGS EARS,,,NO RAW HIDES,, NO GREENIES.. THEY ARE VERY DANGEROUS FOR THEM.. if you want to get a 100% digestable treat, get bully sticks...... |
Pig ears are bad for them? |

Mojo had to be on IV for a week back in January over either Greenies or Rawhides.....those are both banned in our house. I think pig ears are pretty much considered Rawhides...not certain, but they do make something called "Better Than Ears". I have never tried them, so don't know. We only do healthy treats - like Nutro Natural Choice treats OR Pupcorn, etc. We always read the ingredients....and make sure they are 100% Digestable. Good luck! |

I'm glad Mojo isn't the only picky one on here! We haven't tried the Better Than Ears, but I figured he wouldn't like them anyway. Course, I don't even think he liked the Bully Stick either......there has to be a reason we haven't gotten another one....... We haven't tried Flossies yet. He normally doesn't like any of the homemade stuff either.....I swear, I have one picky eater! Course with Mojo, he would rather have a new toy over a snack/treat any day! |
I got Teddy Puppy Teething Treat..chicken flavor and he LOVES them. They are little sticks and they are soft. It's in a little green and white bag and it has a red circle on it that says For teeth and gums. No preservatives, no artificial colors, tastes great, so it's perfectly healthy. Ill put pics if u're interested. |
Now I know Thanks - now I know. I stand by the treats section at the petstore and have no idea what's safe for Max and what isn't. Thanks Lexi's Mom - bully sticks it is. I bought some treat wrapped in rawhide that Max loves, but now I'll sneak the leftover pieces of rawhide into the garbage. By the way, what's good for their teeth. I now greenies are out - what else is a good, safe product? Judy |
I just got Chachi and Jewels bullysticks for the first time and they loved them. Now I am going to get flossies |
I just got my two a new chewing treat. It's dried fish skins from Iceland. They are natural and I think they're good for them. They both love them so much. They get them at night when my boyfriend and I like to watch a movie. Wesley knows where I keep them and cries for them all day, he loves them so much. They're website is: http://www.elinoras.com/aboutus.htm You might want to check them out. I'd also love to know what you think about them, if you try them. |
I got Greenies for Bella the other day and she just loved them! I think they have the potential to be unsafe near the end, so it is a supervised treat. It didnt seem to bother her digestion though, so thats a plus! I would try them with your pup before counting them out. |
I got bull pizzles on my website, they are bully sticks that dont smell. Its all about how the company that makes them processes it. I think thats why the flossie dont smell bad either. BUt I agree, regular bully sticks stink but dogs LOVE them! I dont let my girls have any greenies, rawhides, bones, pig ears or anything like that. Its just too scary, heard way too many horror stories and it not worth the risk. My girls only get bullysticks and nylabones to chew on. |
Got some bully stick to try After reading some threads on this forum, I went to buy soem bully sticks for my baby. He LOVES it! And it does really give me some time for myself :D And, he is so cute. He knows I will keep his bully stick after he had enough with them and he didn't like that so after he finish playing with it, he will try to hide it from me! He tried to hide it in a carton of Rootbeer box, in my hubby's shoes but couldn't get it in, in his litter box (which I had to say no to him again and again and he finally understood) and finally, I let him think I do not know where he hides it, beside a couch in the living room yet it is placed in the open. hehehe :animal36 he is really a funny boy. |
cow hooves are good for them tooo... lexi hasnt been able to distroy that one yet... they are very hard too...but... they smell, so what .. |
Oh my, I agree with, I think it was Lexi Rae??? Please don't give your yorkies pigs ears or rawhides!!! I have done this before and after chewing on them for a while, they get very soft and pieces can be chewed off that are way too big to swallow. Some, like my little yorkie, will try and swallow the whole piece!!! It can get lodged in their throats!!! This happened to me, and thankfully I was right there and saw my yorkie having trouble trying to swallow it, and had to reach in and pull it out of her throat!!!! It was a long stringy piece!!! That was the end of buying those!!!! Never again!!! I have never tried the bully sticks, but they sound nasty for sure, just knowing what they are!! I don't know if I want my girls even chewing on something like that and then kissing on me! LOL |
Hey Everyone, I just wanted to say that I think each dog is different and what might not work for one will for another. I wouldn't generalize and say NEVER give your dog this or that. I think you need to try different things in a supervised situation and decide for yourself. Does anyone know if you can order Bully Sticks online?? Lexi Rea, what size are the cow hooves? I have seen them, but thought they might be too big. Might try them out. |
Hi, I bought some flossies online through ebay in bulk, and really regretted it because they smelled awful.... Then did a little more research and discovered that one of the authentic (and non-smelly) forms of flossies are made by Merrick. Here's one site I found that sells them: http://www.onlynaturalpet.com/produc...es/134014.aspx Kasey just loves them! I also found one website (was it Merrick's?) that had bag of Flossie pieces (that couldn't be sold as spirals, as they usually are), and Kasey loves those too. Reading all of your emails, I'm thinking maybe we need to just stick with Flossies and stay away from the other stuff.... Thanks everybody! Kim |
Do they sell bully sticks in canada? lol I have never heard of them. |
