Thanks for the quick response and yeah you may have a newer batch. I wont stop giving Sheila greenies but I will ensure I monitor her chewing. From what I've seen most problems with greenies are with large breeds.

Yes, I think a lot of the issues with Greenie are with dogs that gulp or swallow large pieces. If you supervise and know your dogs chewing habits I think they can be safe. Its funny because my name is Sheila.

The first few times I gave Maddie a greenie, she loved them and chewed away to her hearts content. Now all she does with greenies is look for hiding places and tries to cover them with the carpet, but the carpet doesn't move and she gets frustrated. It is so comical to watch her finding hiding places and sometimes when she can't manage to get it covered, she will let out a little sigh and it's so cute. It bothered me that she wasn't chewing them anymore because I want her to have good teeth, but after reading these posts, maybe it's better that she doesn't.

This is the first I have ever heard anything about Greenies. My little frankie had one last night! :eek: I guess it could explain his coghing and throwing up! Thanks for letting us know and sorry about the loss.

Oh my gosh! Frankie does the same thing! He hides them under everything! But only when he is done chewing on it.

This weekend we brought Rocky to my in-laws so they could puppy-sit while we went out. We left a greenie for him to chew because he adores them. They called to tell us that he had choked on the greenie and coughed up a huge portion (the size of the brush) and a lot of white foamy stuff with a weird consistency. We assumed this was because they might not have watched him as carefully as we normally do. Two nights later we gave him another. The same thing happened! We watched him the whole time but somehow he was still able to swallow that last piece whole. We haven't given him one since, but would like to be able to since he loves them so much. I'm just too scared!

It really depends on how your dog eats. The same thing can be said for a number of other products out there. If your dog is a gulper don't give him greenies... I still haven't seen anything in this thread to point to greenies as being evil. All I've seen is a problem with big dogs that are gulpers. Sorry but I'm an internet veteran and have seen WAY to many false claims so I remain somewhat sceptical to a post on a forum. Please just link me to some factual information and I'll be on board, until then she gets her greenies.

Just a question, since I am a new dog owner, i don't know what greenies are.. Can someone explain.. I am sorry if this is a stupid question, i just want to know about anything that is harmful to our babies

I'm a bit on the paranoid side. I won't use them. One death is more than I need to avoid a product.

I also don't feed rawhides of any kind or pig ears. I do give them the corn starch bones under supervision and take them away when they start to look sharp or small. Corn starch dissolves easier in the body. Booda bones is the brand name I think.

Biggie loves greenies and i love greenies for biggie.i saw this thread and thought to myself Oh My, no more greenies.But my boyfriend
suggested that when we give him a petite greenie which is usually during one of our primetime shows, Biggie has to sit in our lap as we hold one end of the greenie,so we can keep a very good eye on him. ilnow they are expensive but as soon as it gets down to the end we throw it away,and he gets a brand new 1 the next time!

Stewie is at home alone with a Greenie right now. I'm afraid.

but then again, it's morbid, but I'm always afraid of finding him dead when I come home. I always think he is going to rip open a toy or choke on his food.

My daughter works at a vet's office and they say greenies are just as bad as rawhide they are a no no as far as the Emergency Vets are concerned!

As I had posted in my "poll", we had three yorkies that became violently ill, all in one evening, right after giving each of them a mini toohbrush Greenie. I don't believe it is a "blockage" issue, as one of our Yorkies was hospitalized and was checked for any blockages in his stomach, esophagus, and intestines. We believe it is the "chemical" makeup of these so-called treats that caused this type of reaction. This also has nothing to do with the size of the Greenie. One of our Yorkies had become sick with just the chip size, as well. Our breeder has also been having problems with any of her Yorkies that were given Greenies. I understand that it is imperative to watch your Yorkies indulge in any kind of treat, as we always do. Please be alerted to the fact that all three of our Yorkies (all different sizes) became sick virtually simultaneously; I just find it hard to believe that it had anything to do with their eating habits.

Thanks for this information. I just had Cali's teeth professionally cleaned
and was thinking about giving her greenies to keep them cleaned.
I will NOT now. FYI...... I would not give them the pupparoni treats.
Cali loved them but they caused her to get a stomach ulcer and she
threw up blood. Scared me silly..... No more of that. I'm sticking

I had never heard of Greenies until I stumbled into this forum.

However, personally I believe (and my vet agrees) that no chew bone or dental treat will clean a dogs teath as well as daily brushing. So if you are concerned about your dog's breath or dental health...I would start brushing. I suggest you use the finger type of brush (it makes it a whole lot easier in small mouths). The brand of toothpaste I use is PetDental. It costs about $6 and can be purchased at PetCo (or probably any other petstore). This has improved Sydney's breath 100% & SHE LOVES IT. The toothpaste tastes like butterscotch and she gets so excited she starts hopping around as soon as she sees the tube.

This form of teeth cleaning/breath improvement is 100% safe and effective...so why monkey around with a product that might harm your baby? Besides we all know that Yorkies are prone to tooth decay and stopping that will prolong the life of your pet. :)

I think Breeze hit the nail on the head with this quote. It makes sense that anything that isn't chewed properly could cause harm.

Baxter loves greenies. I think I will continue to give them to him, but not as often (he gets 1 each day).

As for substituting greenies for dental care, I don't think that is anyone's intension here. It's not mine. Baxter gets his teeth brushed too. Dogs like to chew-that's what the greenies are all about. :)

My Little Abbie and Maddie love greenies. I had always heard that rawhide is harmful to their digestive system, but I thought greenies were a safe alternative. I have made two emergency trips to the vet since I got my babies. Each time, it was because of blood in loose stool, and vomiting. The vets told me that it was a virus and gave me kaopectate and antibiotics. They also charged me $300. My dogs were fine until two days ago when I gave them greenies-while they were under close supervision. Since then, they have both had horrible diarrhea. I examined it closely and noticed that it had a green tint. I am convinced that their little digestive systems cannot handle the greenie particles. I will never give them to my babies, and I hope that everyone takes this warning seriously.

i would be too scared to give my dogs pigsears or rawhide as i have heard of a few deaths from choking on them

My theory is -- watch your dog when s/he's eating and monitor their bowel if you're concerned. I have never had a problem with Greenies and plan to feed them to Stewie for a long time. He loves them. He is actually chewing on one now :)

Ok first of all why keep coming on here talking about another loss just quit giving them to your babies! I mean its not rocket science here people you have heard they can kill your dogs but yet you still go and buy them! Someone mentioned that they need more proof because many things can cause these problems, why would you even take the risk, if you would even take a chance at risking your dogs life, only because you need more proof that is ridiculous! Would you give a child something that THEY REALLY DONT EVEN HAVE TO HAVE!!! it is just a treat, people they have hundreds of treats we can give our babies, but we still keep having this discrepency over these stupid greenies! Im sorry but if you people on here still insist on giving these treats to your babies and asking for a health risk to happen so you can come on here to talk about it, then you dont deserve a precious yorkie anyway! There are a lot of things that can kill your dog. They can choke on anything.The person who makes YT possible feeds Greenies, so I guess there wouldn't even be a YT if everyone who fed Greenies wouldn't be able to have a Yorkie. The logic in that post is missing.

there is a possibility that yorkies can choke on anything. I just had to get a penny from hailey's mouth this morning that she found in the couch. nothing is 100 percent safe we just need to use common sense and watch our babies just like you would watch an infant.

You all are right. Our puppies could choke on anything they find. What I've found more scary in this forum are the stories of bloody stool, vomiting and diarrhea. But if you have been giving your yorkie greenies for years and haven't seen any signs of this...then you have no problem. I know that personally since Syd has never had a greenie...I'm not willing to risk it. Just like humans, all of their little digestive systems are different. What bothers one may be fine for another. Just watch your pet carefully when they are trying a new treat or chew to see how their body reacts to it. And if they are a "gulper" no ediable chew would be a good idea for them because of choking issues.

The only problem Asia has had with a greenie is she droped it in the track for the sliding glass door. She got her face stuck trying to get it back out. Scared the day-lights out of me when she started yelping and crying. She is OK. but from now on I leave the sercurity board in the track at all times.

Very good point, StewiesMom, the person you replied to may have been a little harsh in saying people that give a Yorkie a Greenie doesn't deserve a Yorkie. While there have been some problems with a select few having sick Yorkies from giving them Greenies, there are many, many more Yorkie owners that have had no problems with Yorkies at all. Monitoring your Yorkie when they are eating is the key, as Sabrina says, they CAN choke on anything they find just around the house...

The logic in my post is missing?? If you would read these posts about these greenies and still feed your dog you have no logic yourself. I myself have read on here about them and wouldnt even risk my dogs health, is there no logic in that?? You tell me. So what if the founder of YT gives them to his dogs, if I read on here that they killed a dog I wouldnt do it just because the YT people do it, its just obviously lucky for them that nothing has happened to their dog. Thats just amazing that you people like to make little comments on here like " the logic is missing in that post" Do I not have the right to my own opinion without someone commenting about logic? Yes, the logic in your post is missing. I think its a little (or maybe a lot) ridiculous to go out on a limb and say that people who feed Greenies do not deserve a "precious yorkie". I know what's best for my dog. Greenies helped his stubborn teeth fall out, have made his breath fresh and have supplemented his food with some of the great nutrients that are found in the natural Greenies product.I am not a spokesperson for Greenies. So if I posted that a certain dog food that you are feeding your dog killed a Yorkie, you would stop feeding him/her that and change foods to another?

You DEFINITELY have the right to your opinion on Greenies, but I think that it was a little out-on-a-limb to say that people who use them should not have a dog. That was my point about "logic" not that you caring for other Yorkies is illogical.
I totally respect your opinion and practices of not using any product that you don't see fit for Yorkies. Conversely, however, I do not want to be told that I shouldn't own a Yorkie because of MY personal choices.
People risk their dogs lives everyday whether it be leaving them at home alone w/ food and water (they could choke) or a pee pad (they could chew it) or when a dog and his owner go for a walk -- a bigger dog may come and injure the small dog. It's all about personal choices.
