The Walking Thread - What Did You See The Last Time You Took Your Pup For A Walk?

I know a lot of you take your pups for a walk and occasionally you post about it in the general discussion, here's a thread to make it easier to post if you care to share! :D

Post as often as you like, as short or as detailed as is convenient, photos or no. It's all for fun! :)

Walking Zippy today in a local park, we saw King County Parks Back Country Trails Group upgrading a piece of trail that was turned into muck when a beaver extended his dam. Wooden framing set into the muddy trail and filled in with double fist sized rocks and gravel on top should do the trick!

The ah-ha moment of today's walk was seeing a green-winged teal at the local pond. The sun was at my back while I watched the teal meander peacefully in front of me, his bright colors were ablaze and brilliant! (I stole this pic from the web to share since my phone just did not do it justice) ;)

Did the dogs react to the ducks? We have a fake lake nearby, it used to be real but the local wells drained it dry so they filled it in with cement and built a lot of expensive homes around the fake lake so now us common people have no access but we do get lots of ducks. I have a great video of Buster watching two ducks in our courtyard. I was surprised he did not growl or twitch like he was ready to spring he just watched in fascination.

No, I just had Zippy with me today, he didn't react since the duck kept it's distance or he may not have even seen the duck due to the underbrush. Zippy and Gucci have interest in the ducks we see on a lake nearby when they are closer but today, we hit the pond. It's about a 5-8 acre pond with lots of wood growing out of it so you can only see about 30 yards from the shore towards the center of the pond. Vast areas of the pond are not visible. Zippy kept busy with the squirrels in the trees though! LOL He's really a character!

Here's a photo from last Fall, Gucci and the edge of the pond... this isn't a pond people go to in order to feed ducks. No houses around it, just dirt and some gravel trails. Woodsy feel in the city.

A snake . I think it was a baby grass snake, but it was just chilling out in the middle of the sidewalk *bleh*. My husband thought he was going to have a new pet  :thumbdown. Rasta was not amused, he thought he needed to defend me from it with all the noises I was making when the hubs attempted to pick it up lol.

That's hilarious! Like a little kid with a worm dangling it in front of another kid, is how I picture it.

Hit a local State Park today with Gucci and Zippy, saw lots of people, trees, dead frog and just too much to list separately. :p

Wow access is only $30 a year to such a lovely wild oasis in the city. Buster and I envy you guys.

Our state parks were no additional charge until a few years ago, 2008's recession and a couple years later more user fees popped up, with this year's increase and dealer fee, I think it was $36 for the year, I bought it with my fishing license another $60ish, $98 for the two. BUT, I do have access to state lands across the state now. LOL The picture was to illustrate: "They want their money!" LOL

This state park is about 2 miles away and I should get my money's worth. The other two city and county parks are no charge and closer.

I saw some wood ducks today, looks like a local trail upgrade has been completed. Met with a park volunteer/ambassador, we cut some black berry bushes and hauled out trash, Zippy was very patient during the work. Sounds like the weather will be crap for a couple days so it was good to hit it again today. This is a local county park. There are wood ducks in the last picture but, I can't see them either so, no worries, another view of the pond. :D

Does anyone else walk their dogs? LOL  I posted in this part of the forum since it was labeled "fun" and sub description was "activities" with your yorkies. No biggy!

MauiGirl 04-10-2015 11:28 PM

I took Tiki on a beach walk last Saturday and we saw lots of people sun bathing, a few stand-up paddle boarding, and the most exciting thing was 2 big turtles swimming near my granddaughter very close to shore.

(I don't walk the pups often, but this was an exceptional day)

margaritaville 04-13-2015 05:05 AM

I have been to Marymoor dog park in Wa many times with my daughter and her Bernese Mountain Dog (who passed last year.). When out there in March, we just walked her new dog around her neighborhood as he is still a puppy and not to be trusted of leash just yet. But it is a great place to let your dog socialize.

Mark, if you are ever in the Redmond area and looking for a good beer my daughter Michelle and her husband Ryan have a brewery there. It call Hi Fi Brewing at 14950 NE 95th St Redmond. They are dog friendly. When I went there there were 3 dogs lounging around while their owners had a beer.

Cookie and I finally got to take a walk yesterday after a very long and
cold winter! We took our normal walk through the park and behind an elementary school. I think what I didn't see was better than what I did see.
Of course I saw the tree's and little creek and lots of brown grass.
But last year before the weather got bad, we had lots of construction
going on in the part and it was hard to get through. Cookie had to check
out everything they were doing of course! LOL!!
So this walk, there was no one but us and it was great! :animal-pa :animal-pa

Sunday Walk

We saw a red winged blackbird - and that was the only bird life I saw! And there was this lovely park with a boardwalk over the wetlands and I wondered why no bird life/ I know that our winter was exceedingly cool as our spring is but heck what is going on?

I try to get a pic and did not a very good one as one of my idiot friends behind me starting shouting out to our friend ahead and that bird took flight.

yorkietalkjilly 04-16-2015 12:43 PM

Yesterday, but we saw no birds or critters, just neighbors coming and goes and Tibbe sniffed himself silly. When I first got him he was so hyper sometimes he would reverse sneeze and go wild every time he got out front but now he seems to just enjoy it like a vacation from home and walks along, once in a while stopping to sniff forever before moving on. Strange thing is, we came to a Fire Hydrant(freshly repainted) and I dutifully stopped to allow him to sniff all he wanted thinking that well-known "pee-post" would be scent-rich but he wasn't interested at all! He seemed way more interested in sniffing the edge of the grass all along the sidewalk.

Took a drive out to Sultan Basin Recreation Area yesterday, very woodsy, hoping to find morel mushrooms. At one of our stops, a geocacher asked what kind of dog Zippy was, I rambled off the possibilities and he followed up with the best response: "So, he's an American!" LMAO

We didn't find morels but we saw lots of different plants, some of which will have wonderful berries in the late summer.

MissSunni 04-17-2015 05:49 PM

I live near High Point State Park in NJ, and parts of the Appalacian trail. I love walking there with my babies, but I haven't taken Sunni yet. We do have a huge population of black bears which are sort of a problem, in some spots. For now I'm just going to safe places where there are lots of people around…but that still means country. Today, Sunni came shopping and to the office with me for a few minutes. They let me bring her into Lowes to get some spring cleaning things:) So that was all new for her..well, Lowes was…..there are a few random birds that are inside our lowes…they come from the Garden Center and sneak in and manage to spend the winter in there, lol. I really think she prefers walking in the city. She gets a ton of attention from everyone, lol.

Yesterday and today were the same route, up through the park on the trails, some gravel, some dirt and roots, less mud now with the better days. Heard some frogs yesterday, usually just hear them at night here. Today, I smelled a pungent odor after passing by a youngster in his 20s, thought that he had some of that wacky tobacky... I could still smell it way down the trail so I'm thinking a skunk moved in, I called Zippy in close. Lots of rabbits today as well. Zip in his new doo!

MarkFromSea 04-23-2015 03:09 PM

It's raining, I suited up a head out with Zip anyway.... Made it as far as the middle school track/field, kids had it occupied with a PE class so decided to cut the walk short, it was still raining after all! Saw some late blooming purple tulips that were striking.

Yesterday, had Zip and our new pup Louie out for a walk. He did pretty good for being about 4 months old. Everything, in his mouth! LOL By the end of the walk, he had the routine down and was "tailing" Zip very closely and at a decent clip.

margaritaville 04-23-2015 04:19 PM

We try to get to the dog park as much as possible. The park has a small dog, off leash area so they get exercise but I don't.
Usually we pull in to the barking lot (with these two crazies barking like mad and go right in the gate to the area). Yesterday I decided I needed exercise too. So I parked in the baseball field lot and walked over to the dog park. It's about 3/4 of a mile each way. Guess what I saw this morning? A tick on Bubba. Luckily, it had not attached yet.

Ouch on the tick showing up so early!

Love the video of your pups! I also like that leash in the video! Had the 3 dogs out walking the park today, on leash since we saw a beautiful owl yesterday, but 3 separate leashes were a bit of a hand full.

Zip and I headed out hunting for morel mushrooms Wed afternoon and returned the wee hours of Sat morning, a camping trip with a purpose in the Cascades basically. So Zip and I hiked around hillsides for a few days hunting up and down the slopes of areas that had forest fires last Aug or Sept. Lots of ash and new growth, mostly the forest floor was burned with the ponderosa pine canopy still intact. It actually looked like in a few years mostly it'll look park like, with the underbrush cleared out and some new greenery coming in until, years later, the tree canopy matures and blocks the sun from the forest floor. Zip was enthusiastic each and every trip into the woods and there were lots of trips trying to locate morels and later actually picking some. Ended up with 2 gallons of the tasty morsels, not bad for the first successful trip!

Our first day home Zippy slept all day while I cleaned, cooked and dried our new found treasure. Sunday and today, he's like a brand new dog with more zest and zeal than he's ever had. He's been a very happy dog the last 5 months we've had him, this trip seems to brought his enthusiasm to a brand new level.

margaritaville 05-04-2015 05:05 PM

Sounds like you and Zippy are having a great time on your adventures. Nice looking Morrells.

I'm visiting my daughter in Belleview this week and walked 3.5 miles on the Lake to Lake Trail today and yesterday but rain is project for tomorrow. My pups are home in NJ but I had my daughters Great Dane with me. I'm so not use to walking big dogs!

Zippy and I are still making our daily walks plus we made another 3 day trip for morels in E WA a week ago. On this trip to the woods when he cornered a squirrel or chipmunk up a tree or in a pile of boulders, I just let him bark and act nutty like a free dog. He had a blast! The last trip, I had kept him closer at all times. I took a lot fewer pictures but we ended up scoring 13 pounds of "burn" morels, I believe it's one of these four species "Morchella capitata is one of four species of wildfire-adapted morel in western North America, the others being M. septimelata, M. sextelata, and M. tomentosa"
Morchella capitata - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Bummer, I set my phone for better quality pictures and they wouldn't download here. :(

MarkFromSea 05-27-2015 05:20 PM

Two weeks! I missed posting a lot of walks and another morel hunt. The last 3 day morel hunt we traveled to E WA to a burn that occurred last summer/fall. We hit the bonanza! 3 1/2 coolers of morels! Lots to see, an unusual number of frogs, a deer shed(antler), a lizard of some sort, a rabbit, and more squirrels for Zippy to chase up trees. We left the van early each morning and returned late each night. Hiked in a couple miles to the higher elevations of the hills and worked the intermittent burn areas. By the 3rd day, both of us were moving quite a bit slower than day one. Zippy has turned out to be a fun little buddy in the mountains hiking and hunting the slopes, ridges and draws. I still haven't been able to instill in him the desire to search for morels and point them out to me. LOL

Today we, Zippy, Rambo and I, hit the lake trail, saw a dying raccoon near the trail and belly up perch in the lake. What's up with that?????? Other than that, it was a beauty of a walk through a ravine with a small stream in it. Saw about one inch fish in the stream. The first since this last Winter. Oh, the lake was glass smooth, a guy was doing touch and go's with an RC float plane, very cool! We saw an older yorkie following a ways behind their owner, poor old guy, at least he was out and about! Gucci is grounded until his mom lets him go out again. ;)

MarkFromSea 05-28-2015 12:47 AM

There's a few photos here at a different forum. Oddly, the same looking format as YT.

Morels - are you hunting for and finding any? (year, good) - Washington (WA) - City-Data Forum

That worked pretty well! I'll just post reports over there and then bring the links over here. LOL there's more than one way to skin a cat when it comes to posting pictures! LOL
