He destroys his toys My 7mo old puppy literally tears up his toys. It doesn't matter what toy I get him. If it has a rope.. he keeps at it until he gets the rope off. If a stuffed animal has ears, a nose, a fin, arm or leg... he will keep chewing on them until he gets them off. He always starts with the tags first. He will keep at them until he has them off.:animal36 He loves to go chase anything we throw for him and he will bring it back so we can throw it again. But when he gets tired, he will lay with the toy and start chewing something off of it.:( He loves tennis balls, but he will chew off the fur when he gets a chance. I got him big dog toys.. and he is chewing on them too. He has chew bones, teething rubber thingies that you put in the freezer and he loves them. He can go through them faster than any dog I have ever seen. Does anyone have any suggestions? I could sure use some help. I don't mind buying him new toys. But I don't want him to eat something that could harm him. Someone told me about the giggle ball. :) All my dogs love it. It is a fantastic toy. He has already taken the tag off. And yesterday I caught him chewing on the red head phones. He was grabbing some and trying to pull it off of the toy. What can I do to help him stop tearing them up? Bobbi marlinbobbi@yahoo.com |
I'm having the same problem with my almost 7 month old. lol. I try and watch him when he plays with the toys... if I see him lingering too long just chewing on a toy and not playing with it, I usually take it away....otherwise he'll kill it. lol. I just bought him another PetStages toy from petsmart and it's safe for tough chewers....I'm putting it to the test today....and the best part is, if he destroys it, PetSmart lets you return the toy. Also, you should try the AKC toys, the fabric animals are all tripple stiched and Capone has yet to chew off more than an ear. lol. Good luck! |
Thank you.. I will try the new toys. I do take them away from him and put them up when he chews too long. But as soon as he gets them back.. he does it again. He is stubborn and he remembers just where he left off. He chews right through the material.. not just where it is sewed. In all my years as a dog owner/lover, I have never had a dog that chewed like he does. LOL :) Oh well, I love him dearly. He is the light in my eye and the warmth in my heart.:dogsm3::hearts-xx:dreaming: Sandy still has the first stuffed animals I bought for her. |
The kongs are very durable. Also the cuz balls at petsmart |

my oldest Chanel who is 6 has always loved her toys and actually PLAYS with them - - whereas Cheri has to destroy the toy until there is stuffing all over the house & the squeaker is out (she's 4)... so I have a feeling if they do this as a puppy - then they'll do it as an adult.... so no help from me lol - I can't even give my girls el cheapo toys anymore cause Cheri will ruin them in just hours.... my only advise is getting a really WELL MADE TOY and see if that helps |
Tricksie is almost 2 and she did quit destroying her toys. Now I can spend all of that money on something else. |
I kinda have the same Problem with Maya .... plastic toys are destroyd UNLESS the have a squeaker ..... if not she will tear it up and it it .... |
1 Attachment(s) I sympathize. Sounds just like Eddie. Eats the fur off tennis balls, dissects plush toys in minutes to get to the squeaky. You can try bully sticks. They're safe and last for a while if he likes hard chews. For some reason, one of the few soft toys he doesn't destroy are those little round "eggs" that come with some of the interactive toys. Like dinosaur eggs or turtle eggs. He's generally better with that kind of material, not real fluffy. Here's a picture of what I'm talking about. Just the refill eggs, not the toy itself. They have a squeaky in them, but for some reason Eddie doesn't shred them -- often. |
Bree does the exact same thing with her toys, she can be really aggressive with them. Recently, I saw her chewing the fur off of her tennis ball. When I tell her that's a no no or try to take them away from her, she either hides her toys from me or make me chase her around the house to get them. I gave her a rawhide bone a couple of times and it kept her from destroying her toys for awhile. |
Tricksie got a bacterial infection from the Bully Sticks, maybe she was too young but I am afraid to try them again, each visit to the Vet in $300 |

Thanks Mike, My lil one is also an agressive chewer and I have yet to find anything that she won't destroy....I just might have to give these a try... |
Hope it works. I take no responsibility, lol, if they don't :) ! I still have no idea why he doesn't destroy that toy yet destroys all others. It would be interesting if someone else had the same experience. |
Going to purchase um and give them a try...I will let you know if it works for her or not.....keep your fingers crossed :xfingers: that it does... :) |
Thank you for this thread! My 7 mo. old is a destroyer too. She picks with her front teeth until she gets all of the threads loose that make the eyes in her plushy mini toys, she does the same thing with her rope pull toy and shreds anything that's rubber. My other Yorkie never played with toys and the teething stage was non-existent. Abby is a different story. If I have a clothes basket in site, she takes dirty clothes out (underwear, washrags, towels, etc.) runs off and starts chewing them up. Sometimes she leaves a trail, lol. I dread the day that company comes over and my panties are all over the floor. |
Hope she outgrows that, Tricksie did when she was about 1 1/2 years old. |
Shayna have destroy so many toys:rolleyes:I call her Jaws he,he anyway I have to keep bying toys for them;) |
My little guys don't destroy their toys (thank goodness) but they do love their Skineez toys a lot and I think they would hold up to the pups that chew and chew and chew. They are plush and have a squeaker at each end but they don't have any stuffing in them so they can't really tear them apart easily. They love to play tug-of-war with them. Give them a try. I purchased them from a specialty store and paid way too much but they are reasonably priced online. Good Luck! Plush Dog Toys: Skinneeez Stuffing Free Dog Toys at Drs. Foster & Smith |
Thank you guys for all of your ideas.. It is nice to hear that TJ isn't the only one. :) I have bought the Kong toys and they work. I also found some of the toys for large dogs work with him. (They are made of heavier stuff.) As far as tennis balls go.... they are furless. I have never seen a dog de-fuzz a ball before. At first I thought there must be something wrong with it.. so I put it up and got him a different one.. when I checked to see what he was doing.. the new tennis ball had a bare spot and he had a pile of fuzz beside him. they can look so innocent, can't they. :) He is doing better with the big dog toys and the kongs. And for that i am thankful. He loves playing with the rope toys too (for big dogs). I haven't gotten up the nerve yet to try the bully stick. (I was going to until I found out what they are.) But I am thinking about it. LOL |

I did find more squeekers for the dog toys.. now when I sew up the holes in the toys. I replace the squeekers, that are not working, at the same time. |

The undies on the floor for company would definately be something. :) LOL |
