DIY Fun sock toy We put together the coolest toy. Gizmo loves it. 1. We took one of those hospital "socks" with the tread on the bottom, but I'm sure you can use any kind of sock. 2. We put a Dr. No replacement squeaker in the bottom. (You can pick a package of them up at Petsmart). 3. Then, we put an empty water bottle without a cap in the sock after the squeaker so that the squeaker is on the bottom. 4. We then took an empty treat bag from Petco and wadded it up. We put that on top of the water bottle. Any kind of plastic that crunches will work. 5. Then, we stretched the sock, tied a knot, and tossed it to Gizmo. Have fun! He has so much fun with this. :D His favorite thing to do is shake it by the knot and fling it across the room! :D It's hilarious to watch. |
:p Thx for sharing. I can imagine how much Fun Gizmo is having with that. If there is a sock lying around our house or if I happen to drop one out of the dryer, you can bet Bella will be right there to grap & run. She will love this!:D |
What a fun toy! Thanks. |
What a cool idea! I'm gonna have to try this! Meeko goes thro toys soo fast and I'm tired of grabbing out the needle and stuffing to repair them. This will be an easy toy to give him in between. Thanks! |
Banjo loves both- sock and empty bottles!! Cool idea!!! Thanks for sharing! |
Leave it to you Judy to come up w/ a great fun toy...and a good way to recycle too! |
Thank you, you are so sweet. :) Hey! We all just help each other, right? ;) |
Judy that is such a great idea - I never heard of a hospital sock but will have to try a baby sock for Izzy..lol. Hey we need a video of Gizmo and the sock.;) |
Hi there! :) A hospital sock is just a sock with some thingies on the sole for traction. I've seen them in the store too, usually around Christmas or the start of cold weather. I'm sure a regular sock would work as well. A video would be fun, but I'm so busy these days, I haven't even had time to take regular photos of him. |
And that's the way it should be...;) Thanks for sharing! |
Thanks so much for sharing this great idea. I made this toy for Lily yesterday and she went BANANAS for it! She actually put holes in the first sock, after playing with it for over an hour. So I replaced it with a new one. I put some hard treats in the water bottle because I didn't have a squeaker. I was a little skeptical at first because she usually doesn't bother with toys.. BUT THIS WAS A HIT! It's light enough for her to whip around, and the crinkle sound combined with the shaking of the treats kept her engaged for a long time. :thumbs up |
We will try this also, I'm sure my Gizmo won't share with the others, I may need four of these!!!!:goodpost::cool88: |
I just made one of these. I had just thrown away a sock with a hole in the heel. But I put it together any way. Surprising, it was my little one Teddy who decided it was "his"!!! he tore the bag right out of the hole and is going at the water bottle now!!!!! I also just put treats in the bottle to rattle, and of course the bottle makes noise also. I don't think I'll get it away to mend the hole!!!! lol Try this for your babies. |
I put the treats in a bottle and it works even better! The rattle is great. :D Thanks for the tip. |
Photos! 2 Attachment(s) Just some photos that might help. :) |
Thanks for sharing this great idea!! |
OMGosh! Your avatar just made my day! How cute! :D |
I made one early and 30 mins later and Laney is still having a blast with it! If it last until she gets bored with it.. Slade might have a chance to try it out. If not, I'll have to make him one of his own. |
hmm.. I have some old socks with holes in them.. I should make one for Choco.. Is it too big for a puppy? I guess the small bottles of water works too right? where did you add the treats for rattling? In the bottle or the plastic part? Thanks for the idea!! And thanks for your help :) |
I didn't add treats to the one I made, but others said it worked. I guess you can try it both ways and see. Let us know, okay? :D |

Well Laney chewed a hole in the sock  So I'll have to make Slade one of his own! |
Well, I made TWO of these as soon as I read the post the other day, LOL...my dh travels a lot and seems to somehow lose socks in his travels, so I always save the ONE he brings back.....I always think the other one will turn up stuffed in his bag or who knows where? So I've got quite a collection~ I've gone thru two sets of the toy now....the first ones I made, I put the squeaker in, but Madison chewed thru the sock and destroyred both squeakers.....the second set, I put the top on the water bottle, didn't use a squeaker, but I put some of their hard kibble into the bottle (this also prevented the kibble from falling out of the bottle, which I think might be why he really tore up the "toy"...he could smell the kibble. But with the top on the bottle, it just makes noise. Then I put the wadded up empty treat bag on top and knotted the sock....I can't believe how MUCH they LOVE these! And it's so funny to see them just flipping them around! I also did one of them with a knot at the top and bottom (just so they have something to fight over:rolleyes:). Thanks for such a great idea!!! The boys thank you too:D |
Oh cool! You just gave me some new ideas for Gizmo's toy. Thank you! :) |
Fun Fun!! Wow, I had no idea yorkies could be so descructive! :D When dakota first came home, she played with her toys...but did not leave them needing life support. ;) Now I am lucky if a toy lasts 5 mins without having it strewn about the room. So this sock toy sounds GREAT! Thank you for the idea! |
LOL! Toy life support! lol Too true!;) |
great idea! |
What a great idea....Lil Miss Izzie loves water bottles...and I have one for her with pinto beans sealed in it...but I think that she would sooooo much more enjoy playing with it when she can't see what's inside....:thumbs up |
Deegan can't get enough of socks & loves water bottles too! I can't leave a closet door open or a basket of clothes where he can reach cause he'll be in there diggin' away for one! And then it's a game of chase around the house to get it back! It's the cutest thing, but gets annoying when you put on a sock and find a hole in it from "you know who!" lol And water bottles... geezz... this kid will take off with those too if he gets a hold of them - full of water or empty - he don't care! lol But I love the little stinker! |
Does anyone else's Yorkie knock themselves silly when playing with theirs? Sam grabs the end of the sock and shakes it like a mad dog and the whole time he is knockin himself in the head:confused: I guess it doesnt hurt bc he keeps doing it. Sometimes he throws it ... runs to grab it and knocks himself in the head again:D Good thing he is cute, I guess lol |
