What do you feed your Yorkie on? When i do finally get my new baby girl, i want to give her the best food possible...can anyone recommend a good quality UK brand? What do you uk members feed your babies on?:) :) |
The best thing anyone could do for their dog is to feed real food. It isn't difficult to do and is the best possible food in the world. Congratulations on your new family member. Show us lots of pictures when you bring her home. |
I use Natural Balance Organic for the kibble and add fresh boiled chicken breast and veggies to his twice a day feeding schedule. I don't want to stop the kibble because he needs the crunch for his teeth and gums. Good luck with your new pup. |
Hey thanks guys! I welcome any advice with open arms! I'm much older and wiser than when i got my first Yorkie Heidi when i was aged only 19 and i want to do the very best i can for my new baby..which..i hasten to add.. i haven't actually got her yet!.. just waiting for a litter to be born and HOPEFULLY.....one of them will be mine! i'm just playing a very frustrating waiting game at the moment! I'm so very very broody for a new furbaby...:D |
Burns...see link http://www.burns-pet-nutrition.co.uk/dog_food.htm Mini Bites for Puppies and now Bailey is on Chicken and Rice. They have an excellent telephone advice/helpline which is free on 0800 083 66 96 (Mon-Fri 9am - 5pm) and they are more than happy to send you out free samples of all of their range and an information pack. |
We fed our puppies on Royal canin yorkie puppy food and goats milk (when weaning) then just substitute it with water to make the food soft. We give our guys now royal canin yorkie dry mix and 1/3 of a tin of butchers tripe mix. |
I feed Royal Canin. The younger ones are on the Mini Junior & then they switch to the Royal Canin Yorkshire at 10 months old as recommended. I've never come across a Yorkshire puppy food that Clioc mentioned, the rep on the stand at Blackpool Championship Show didn't know of it. I have to order them from my local village pet shop as they don't stock it otherwise, which is no problem. The Yorkshire is brilliant for their teeth. When she was six my eldest was being threatened with dental scaling by the vet  Then the Yorkshire became available & I put her on it. Now six years later the vet says he's never seen such perfect teeth on an elderly Yorkie. It said in the blurb at the launch that the kibble had been specially designed to keep their teeth clean, but I thought Oh Yeah, marketing spiel, pull the other one!;) For tea they have human food. Usually a bit of whatever we're having, chicken, beef, whatever, with a few veg, sometimes rice. Mine are very partial to spaghetti bolognese :D They also sometimes get scrambled egg & cheese. The tiniest one has milk for supper. My middle one has a severe addiction to hot cross buns :D |
Hey thanks Meggie!:) I should be, if all goes to plan be picking up my baby on the 6 september. I will of course see what her breeder has been feeding her and ask her advice on this, but i have heard good things about Royal Canin...is it available from most pet stores and is it very expensive? we have a large Pets At Home near to us so i wonder if they sell it there...thanks again though! it is much appreciated! |
The Pets At Home nearest to me doesn't stock it. Can't understand why as they stock Royal Canin cat food but none of the dog ones. The pet shops in the two little market towns near us don't have it either, but you may get if you're near a big town. But, as I said, my village shop gets it for me. The owner has no problem, I ring him to order it & he picks it up from his wholesaler. The Royal Canin Yorkshire only comes in one & a half kilo bags now. I used to be able to order a small sack but the wholesaler doesn't have it now, so i buy 2 of the smaller bags at a time, they cost £7.50 each & a bag feeds one Yorkie for about a month. The Mini Junior comes in a 3 kilo bag & costs nine pound something, not sure of the retail price exactly as I've only recently started to use that & bought it from the Royal Canin stand at Blackpool show. Yes, you're right about sticking with what the breeder has been feeding at first. It's enough of a change moving homes without risking a diet change as well, but you can gradually move her onto the new stuff over a few weeks. Bet you're excited!:) Have they been born yet? |
We are using CANIDAE. |

The breeder was going to keep her herself but she etimates that she will only be about 3.5-4lbs and will be too small to show or breed from so she decided to sell her as a pet only..she's keeping her brother for breeding though, the mother is small and had to have a C-section so she won't be bred from again now. so all being well..i should be collecting her on the 6 september! I'm so very very excited about her..i can hardly think of anything else! lol Her breeder seems lovely too...has been breeding & showing since 1961 and has said we can pick her up from Kidderminster which is not as far from us as kent as she is visiting friends there around that time. She's about 7 weeks old now and will be 13 when we collect her as the breeder is getting all her inoculations done first. |
Oh that's lovely:) She sounds gorgeous |
I feed both my yorkies on Royal Canin and have had no problems, they are a very helpful company and if you contact them they will give you the address of a local supplier to you and send you some samples. If you attend any championship dog shows you will be able to purchase it there. Do not change your puppy's diet too soon though or you may experience problems. You may find that if the breeder uses royal Canin she may get it for you I find that the cheapest way and the larger sacks are much cheaper and it keeps well. All the best with your yorkie I am sure you will have great fun . |
Thanks hensleigh... Some members on here have said its a bit high in protein though...what effect can this have on your dog? I was in a pet store today and was looking at Iams, James Wellbeloved and Eukanuba...anyone use any of those? |
I used to use James Wellbeloved for a couple of my other breed dogs who had developed a diet related skin allergy on other foods. It was very good, cleared up their skin in a few months & they had no further problems with it. My Skyes are on Beta which suits them very well. They are a breed you need to be very careful with regarding protein levels. Regarding the Royal Canin Yorkshire, I used to buy the big sacks, which do work out cheaper, but they became unavailable through retailers. You can now only order them direct from Royal Canin & you have to be a member of their breeders club to get them, which involves having a Kennel Club affix, having a minimum number of dogs,5, or a smaller number of breeding bitches, & placing a minimum order at least every six months. I could join on the affix & number of dogs rules but not on the minimum order as my bigger breed aren't on Royal Canin & my 3 Yorkies have people food has well & though they can be little gannets they wouldn't get through that much in 6 months |

Iams, James Wellbeloved, Eukanuba, Hills etc test their products on animals in the most appaulling ways...by buying their products you are encouraging them to continue torturing animals..please see link. http://www.uncaged.co.uk/petfood.htm It says, and I quote: The companion animal food industry has become big business in recent years. The market is currently dominated by international corporations - such as Procter & Gamble, the makers of IAMS and Eukanuba - who ruthlessly conduct experiments on animals to try to give their pet food a competitive marketing edge. Slick advertising campaigns that promote a caring image obscure a reality of suffering and exploitation. However, as these cruel and unethical practices are being exposed through the work of Uncaged and others, decent animal guardians are seeking out responsible companies who produce pet food without cruel and unethical testing regimes. Uncaged is determined to work with other animal protection groups to persuade the companion animal food industry to clean up its act. Uncaged supports and promotes the BUAV's new No Animal Testing Pet Food Standard. For companies to qualify, they have to prove that neither they nor their suppliers are engaged in animal testing that harms animals: that means no invasive laboratory experiments or keeping animals in captive laboratory or kennel conditions for lengthy periods of time - conditions that cannot fulfil their physical and psychological needs. Many animal food companies issue unreliable and incomplete statements regarding their testing practices and the conduct of their suppliers. You can therefore be assured that this recommended list of foods represents a reliable guide to non-animal tested products. IAMS / Eukanuba owned by Procter & Gamble Hills Science Diet owned by Colgate Palmolive The majority of pet food brands available in the UK are produced by two animal testing companies - "Nestlé Purina/Friskies" and "Pedigree, Masterfoods (Mars Inc)." Nestlé Purina/Friskies: Alpo, Bonio, Felix, Go Cat, Gourmet, Omega Complete, Proplan, Spillers, Vital Balance, Winalot. Pedigree, Masterfoods (Mars Inc): Bounce, Cesar, Chappie, Frolic, James Wellbeloved, Katkins, Kitekat, Pal, Pedigree Chum, Royal Canin, Sheba, Techni-cal (US & Canada), Whiskas. Pedigree also manufacture Thomas rabbit food and Trill bird food. Which is why I feed my dog on Burns.... |
Iams: A Recipe for Cruelty A nine-month investigation into the pet food giant reveals dogs and cats fed a steady diet of loneliness, suffering, and neglect in their laboratory cages. http://www.petatv.com/tvpopup/video....iams&Player=wm The other companies metioned above are no different...if you love animals, don't add to their suffering by buying these pet foods...the sooner people realise what goes on behind the scenes, the sooner people will boycott these companies and animals will stop being unnecessarily tested on:mad: |
I asked my Pixie's breeder via email what she feeds her Yorkies...she's been showing and breeding for 40+ years at Crufts etc and her dogs look fantastic. She said she feeds 'any' (didn't name a brand) 30% Protein puppy complete with a small amount of tinned meat and Tuna or sardines. What do you guys think? I will ask more q's when i go to collect Pixie. I was aiming on combining a complete food with a bit of tinned or fresh meat, fish, vegetables and eggs etc.. a good variety of foods. Obviously when she first comes to our home i will just carry on with what the breeder has been feeding her..dont want too many changes upsetting her. I'm excited and nervous all in one! |
I feed my babies on a raw diet however IMO the best dog foods available in the UK are burns, JWB, arden grange, naturediet and natures:menu. They are all high quality and hypoallergenic. |

Of course you are going to want to start by feeding what your breeder is feeding and switch it over gradually. |

I love the Uk brand Lily's Kitchen, but haven't yet decided if I will feed Ellington it. I don't know how well it compares, but it seems to be pretty good quality. |

We had exactly the same problem with our Harry :aimeeyork and the same response from our Vet...I think he actually wanted us to feed Harry what he was selling (I think it was Science Diet?). We decided that we'd rather know exactly what went into Harry's little tummy - so I decided to home cook, which I have done ever since, and he's absolutely thriving. I home-feed him once a day - either chicken or beef etc + rice or sweet potato + plenty of 'safe' mixed veggies and fruits + a mutivitamin/mineral tablet squashed into it. I leave his kibble down all the time - but he tends to have his 'cooked' meal at lunchtime, and eat his kibble in the evening. I tried loads of dry foods, but he personally seems to prefer Royal Canin Yorkie. His other favourites are Vets Kitchen and Lily's Kitchen. I had read such rave reviews on the main site about the US Orijen and Acana - and managed to track some down at some obscure garden centre near us - unfortunately he wouldn't touch either of them... It's so much trial and error though, isn't it? Good luck! :) Sally + Harry x |

Well that's a good one eh? What does the vet think dogs ate before the advent of manufactured dog food? Perhaps he thinks they lived for centuries on water & fresh air. Bit of an update on my lot. My Yorkies are on a mixture of Royal Canin, but not the Yorkshire any more as they changed the recipe a couple of year ago since when they won't touch it, & James Wellbeloved, but only the Duck as they won't touch the others. I add a bit of cooked chicken as well to get them to eat it, not saying that they're fussy. My Skyes, if it's any interest, are on a lamb feed that my local corn mill makes. |
Has anyone got an opinion on Wainwrights? One of the store assistants at pets at home said it was one the best for my puppy as it contains high quality meat and less additives. She also warned me off buying iams and has 2 Yorkies of her own so I trusted her. What do you think is the best wet food available? We're from the uk btw :) x |

It's ok, but not marvellous. This is only a personal opinion, but 'bought wet food' - we always did best with Lily's Kitchen - which you can buy at Pets at Home, too! :D Sally + Harry :aimeeyork x |
