Iams, James Wellbeloved, Eukanuba, Hills etc test their products on animals in the most appaulling ways...by buying their products you are encouraging them to continue torturing animals..please see link. http://www.uncaged.co.uk/petfood.htm It says, and I quote: The companion animal food industry has become big business in recent years. The market is currently dominated by international corporations - such as Procter & Gamble, the makers of IAMS and Eukanuba - who ruthlessly conduct experiments on animals to try to give their pet food a competitive marketing edge. Slick advertising campaigns that promote a caring image obscure a reality of suffering and exploitation. However, as these cruel and unethical practices are being exposed through the work of Uncaged and others, decent animal guardians are seeking out responsible companies who produce pet food without cruel and unethical testing regimes. Uncaged is determined to work with other animal protection groups to persuade the companion animal food industry to clean up its act. Uncaged supports and promotes the BUAV's new No Animal Testing Pet Food Standard. For companies to qualify, they have to prove that neither they nor their suppliers are engaged in animal testing that harms animals: that means no invasive laboratory experiments or keeping animals in captive laboratory or kennel conditions for lengthy periods of time - conditions that cannot fulfil their physical and psychological needs. Many animal food companies issue unreliable and incomplete statements regarding their testing practices and the conduct of their suppliers. You can therefore be assured that this recommended list of foods represents a reliable guide to non-animal tested products. IAMS / Eukanuba owned by Procter & Gamble Hills Science Diet owned by Colgate Palmolive The majority of pet food brands available in the UK are produced by two animal testing companies - "Nestlé Purina/Friskies" and "Pedigree, Masterfoods (Mars Inc)." Nestlé Purina/Friskies: Alpo, Bonio, Felix, Go Cat, Gourmet, Omega Complete, Proplan, Spillers, Vital Balance, Winalot. Iams: A Recipe for Cruelty A nine-month investigation into the pet food giant reveals dogs and cats fed a steady diet of loneliness, suffering, and neglect in their laboratory cages. http://www.petatv.com/tvpopup/video....iams&Player=wm The other companies metioned above are no different...if you love animals, don't add to their suffering by buying these pet foods...the sooner people realise what goes on behind the scenes, the sooner people will boycott these companies and animals will stop being unnecessarily tested on:mad: |
I asked my Pixie's breeder via email what she feeds her Yorkies...she's been showing and breeding for 40+ years at Crufts etc and her dogs look fantastic. She said she feeds 'any' (didn't name a brand) 30% Protein puppy complete with a small amount of tinned meat and Tuna or sardines. What do you guys think? I will ask more q's when i go to collect Pixie. I was aiming on combining a complete food with a bit of tinned or fresh meat, fish, vegetables and eggs etc.. a good variety of foods. Obviously when she first comes to our home i will just carry on with what the breeder has been feeding her..dont want too many changes upsetting her. I'm excited and nervous all in one! |
I feed my babies on a raw diet however IMO the best dog foods available in the UK are burns, JWB, arden grange, naturediet and natures:menu. They are all high quality and hypoallergenic. |

Of course you are going to want to start by feeding what your breeder is feeding and switch it over gradually. |

I love the Uk brand Lily's Kitchen, but haven't yet decided if I will feed Ellington it. I don't know how well it compares, but it seems to be pretty good quality. |

We had exactly the same problem with our Harry :aimeeyork and the same response from our Vet...I think he actually wanted us to feed Harry what he was selling (I think it was Science Diet?). We decided that we'd rather know exactly what went into Harry's little tummy - so I decided to home cook, which I have done ever since, and he's absolutely thriving. I home-feed him once a day - either chicken or beef etc + rice or sweet potato + plenty of 'safe' mixed veggies and fruits + a mutivitamin/mineral tablet squashed into it. I leave his kibble down all the time - but he tends to have his 'cooked' meal at lunchtime, and eat his kibble in the evening. I tried loads of dry foods, but he personally seems to prefer Royal Canin Yorkie. His other favourites are Vets Kitchen and Lily's Kitchen. I had read such rave reviews on the main site about the US Orijen and Acana - and managed to track some down at some obscure garden centre near us - unfortunately he wouldn't touch either of them... It's so much trial and error though, isn't it? Good luck! :) Sally + Harry x |

Well that's a good one eh? What does the vet think dogs ate before the advent of manufactured dog food? Perhaps he thinks they lived for centuries on water & fresh air. Bit of an update on my lot. My Yorkies are on a mixture of Royal Canin, but not the Yorkshire any more as they changed the recipe a couple of year ago since when they won't touch it, & James Wellbeloved, but only the Duck as they won't touch the others. I add a bit of cooked chicken as well to get them to eat it, not saying that they're fussy. My Skyes, if it's any interest, are on a lamb feed that my local corn mill makes. |
Has anyone got an opinion on Wainwrights? One of the store assistants at pets at home said it was one the best for my puppy as it contains high quality meat and less additives. She also warned me off buying iams and has 2 Yorkies of her own so I trusted her. What do you think is the best wet food available? We're from the uk btw :) x |

It's ok, but not marvellous. This is only a personal opinion, but 'bought wet food' - we always did best with Lily's Kitchen - which you can buy at Pets at Home, too! :D Sally + Harry :aimeeyork x |
