blue born
 

my 5 year old bitch has had her first litter of 6,but 2 were born silver,i havent been able to find much out about these and what i have is conflicting. They seem healthy and thriving,i have read its to do with their genes...some say put them to sleep,others say they are fine...whats the facts? can anyone help:confused:

I am new as well..I believe they are blue born...they can be healthy, but some are quite ill...there is a member on here that has a blue born that is now a year old..i will see if i can find her

KendraE is a member here with a blue born, Mack Brown. She has some old threads if you do a search. There are also some long time breeders on here who can probably help you out if you post in the Breeder forum.

"Unfortunately with blue born puppies the situation is usually fatal. Very few live beyond the 1st few days. The ones that do survive almost always at the time they would normally break blue, lose all their blue body coat and get a very leathery skin that is like an elephant hide and causes the dog to be in extreme pain. At that time the dog has to be humanely put down. I have heard of a couple that have lived a normal life, but I think there are very few that do. I am wondering what your pedigree on both the male and the female looks like. Can you PM me the registered name of both the dam and the sire so I can pull up a pedigree from AKC? It will be very informative to see who is behind your breeding pair, that is carrying this dd gene that triggers the recessive gene to come out. I am sorry about your two babies....how long have you been breeding? If this was one of my litters, of course, these are two babies you pull and keep for yourself, so if they are affected like the article states they will be, you have not sold that baby to someone, who has fallen in love with that baby, only to loose it.....such utter heartbreak. I am NOT a proponent of culling....but I will euthanize a baby that is obviously suffering or in distress....I could NOT cull these two babies at THIS time, but I would NEVER sell them....to me that is unethical. They would be put to restful sleep when their condition deteriorated and their quality of life began to diminish. I would cry....and my heart would break over the loss of these two little souls that did not ask to be conceived. It is incumbent on you to research this thoroughly and see if this breeding pair should ever be bred ahain, either separately or to each other, or should the dam/sire be spayed/neutered if shehe is responsible for passing this gene to these babies. As a breeder, that is YOUR moral obligation and responsibility. I pray for you, wisdom and tolerance and committment as you start this journey.

Hello!! And welcome to YT!! Im sorry to say dont listen to the above post, but pleaze dont!!!

I have a blue born puppy... he is from a singleton litter (thank goodness), but he is an absolute angel baby!! There aren't alot of Blues out there to compare these pups outcomes to!! I definitely would NOT sell them....keep them or place them close with friends and family.. Who knows what their future holds.... But, it is soooo uncertain!! They may be healthy, wonderful babies as my Mack Brown is.. He did contract parvo at 7 months old when he was neutered even though he had 5 rounds of shots..My guess is these babies have a low tolerance and are very susceptible to diseases..;.but again, I dont know if it was a fluke or not. I will be more than happy to be there for you and guide you through!!! What do your babies look like? Check out my albulms for Mack and see if the coloring is the same... Good Luck!!!

Please be specific as to exactly WHAT in my post you do not weant the OP to listen to? I am just curious....I gave her nothing but FACTS...no opinions, and I did NOT advocate culling or euthanising the baby, which most breeders will do. I am just curious about which FACT I told her, you do not want her to listen or pay heed to.

No offense... But I had several individuals tell me to put my pup down... I just never want anyone to think that they are all the same.

Certainly no offense taken!! I have never seen a blue born, never had experience with them, just have heard other breeders...the ones that will ADMIT that they had this genetic mishap spring up in their lines....advocate culling, which I just can not imagine doing! I quoted from Goldenray Yorkies, what THEY felt about blue borns.....I just did not want to think these two babies would be sold....and some breeders would jump on this "rare, rare blue color!!" as a reason to justify charging more for the babies.....to some unsuspecting owner, who would have NO idea the cause for this color was a genetic short circuit, and then loose their little baby after just several months or years. I just encouraged her to keep the babies, not to cull, but in the event they face they type of future outlined by GoldenRay, I didnt want to see those babies sold and then the new owners go through that heartbreak..... I certainly do hope Goldenray, as well as other breeders that have been doing this for 30-40 years, much longer than I have!....are wrong....and I hope your little baby lives a very long and healthy life....there are ALWAYS exceptions to every rule....I think they are emphasizing an "in general" concept!!! How old is your baby now?

I completely understand!! As I also told her to either keep them or make sure they were close at hand with family or friends!

Mack turned 1 this past February... He is such a wonderful baby! I know we were very fortunate that he has done so very well. Of course, His future is still unknown.... but we just take it one day at a time... I just hate to hear people say they had a blue and they are garbage... Mack is wonderful and I cant imagine our lives without him!

I do not think ANY of these precious little souls are garbage...God sent them here for a reason....it is our responsibility to handle them with love and care and understanding, not culling just because it "MAY" turn out unpleasant...and if the time comes when, for WHATEVER reason, their quality of life deteriorates to a point were they are in pain or are irretrivable, health-wise, I feel as their Earth bound caretakers, we have to "bite the bullet' and do whatever is humanely possible to see to it they are returned to Him in as pain free condition as He has given us the knowledge to achieve. I am so happy your little Mack is doing so very well! It is a wonderful thing God sent him to YOU...you saw his value and his purpose of life, and you have probably learned so very much with your experiences with a "blue born"....whatever his future is, I feel he is in loving and caring hands that will do whatever is necessary for him to live a happy and carefree life! And see, God has positioned YOU to share your knowledge gained, with others that may have been "loaned" a little blue baby from Him, so you can enlighten them and encourage them....and maybe they too will have the positive, loving experiences you have had with your little Mack! You can show them it isnt all necessarily gloom and doom and desperation.....Good for you, and God bless you!!!

Great post, and I really hope the OP listens to your words of wisdom. I think at the very least the breeding pair should never be bred again, for even breeding each to different dogs passes the recessive gene down the line, so this pops up again and again. Until breeders stop breeding dogs who knowingly are passing genetic problems, these little dogs will have to pay for our carelessness.

i will not be breeding them again,they are family pets and the daddy is barely 1 and i didnt expect anything to happen quite yet lol he is going to have his little operation very soon :)

hi, i was blessed with three blue born's in one litter and two normal color . I do not know about all these horror stories about blue born's, i kept one. her name is sapphire "baby girl" for short and she is great no health problems i can tell and my vet tells me she is in excellent shape and not to worry. You can get sick babies period not just blue born's i have pics of her if you would like to see them. yes it is a gene problem and that's why they are rare., but that does not mean a death sentence. so don't fret it is all good.http://www.facebook/YorkiesForever.com

Hopefully you have learned enough not to breed those parents again, as these blue borns can have some serious health issues, and some don't survive. KendraE on here has a blue born named Mack Brown...he is now one year old...he is the only one that I know of that has survived...however I am no expert by any means. What happened to the other two if you dont mind my asking?

i have a very reputable vet and he was not concerned at all but i do not plan on breeding the pair again and she is going to be fixed very soon. i do have pics it is on my yorkie page on facebook there are two types of blue bone the completely blue pups may be different i dont know mine where blue ,like a metal blue then a couple of weeks later they started looking chocolate now she is blonde in the face and silver and black on her back her pic is my banner and she is also my profile pic for my yorkie page. i have heard all the horror stories too and i thought they would die by being blue, but all are completely healthy and happy for me she is a one of a kind because for me i hope it doesn't happen again. to me it was just a fluke and thats what my vet told me. i put a link into my comments at first you can go look at her she is sitting inside of a big food bowl and she is sitting on the end of a chair in my home one ear up one ear down .but i do have to say i feel like im being beat up because i didnt put her down i was just trying to let you know all the stories arent true well not in my case.

also i went ahead and sent for their papers from AKC and when people came to look at them i warned them they were blue born and i would not give any guarantee on them other than the well pup check and they agreed to it and took them on home and i have not heard anything about them being unhealthy. I was scared to sell them i was concerned about their health but so far i have had no problems at all

Two types of blue borns?

?????? I thought blue born was just that blue born. I'm fairly new here but \I was under the impression that blue born is born a grey colour, they eventually turn white or lose their hair...KendraE am I wrong??? :confused::confused:

i was told if my babies stayed the color they were when they were born and dont get any brown on them at all and stay blue those are the ones that have all the problems, i dont know i honestly dont all i know is that my baby is thriving.

They are called blue born for a reason instead if blues...

are you a vet that? that is what my vet told me they were thats why i was so worried they wouldnt live im not trying to argue with you im just saying thats what my vet told me

this is one of my blue borns at 3 months old,it has no health problems except he has short hair on his body :)
