What age did you get your pup at? 8wks v 12wks What age did you get your pup at? There seems to be a big thing on the main forum about 12 weeks, but I find round me that they all seem to be "ready" at 8 weeks, and anyone I know who got pups (non Yorkie) were around the 8 wk mark. Is it an American thing or Yorkie thing? |
I got my puppy at 12 weeks exactly to the day, the breeder would NOT let me even take her one day early, we were getting a snow storm and she still said NO, not until she is 12 weeks old... she was really strick on this rule.. IM not sure if its a breeder thing with Yorkies or just a rule of thumb with just yorkies because I know with other breeds in America you can get them between 6 and 8 weeks..:D |
I got Winston at 8 weeks... |
I got Harvey at 8 weeks, i think it is quite usual over here. |
The laws in most states allow 8 weeks, some as early as 6 weeks, but these laws apply to all breeds, and for larger breeds this isn't a problem. Many breeders want to get rid of the early because they do take time and care at this time, and some breeders think the sooner they can sell them the better. The mother club of the Yorkshire Terrier the YTCA recommends that all breeders keep the pups for a minimum of 12 weeks, tiny's should even be kept longer. Even though mother isn't nursing, she and littermates are teaching important socialization skills, such as inhibition of the biting reflex. Remember that a good breeder isn't just trying to produce an adequate dog, but trying to do what will give the dog the best chance at a healthy start. Here's a good article on why the 12 week rule is important for small breeds. Why do Maltese puppies need to be 12 weeks old before going to a new home?? |
I got Cali at 9 weeks, Pixie at 13 months and Roxie at 4 months. Cali is the sweetest and most outgoing so it didn't seem to hurt her. |
We got Mica at 14 weeks because she so tiny back then the breeder wouldn't let her go any sooner. We got Lindi at 12 weeks and Maggie at 11 months. |
I got Tink at 8 weeks (that was 16 years ago). Same breeder now says 10-12 weeks, but for little ones she may keep them longer. |
My first Yorkie girl was 8 weeks when I brought her home back in 1993..she was 5-6lbs as an adult. Pixie will be 2 in June, and I brought her home at 14 weeks..she's around 3lbs. Pixie's breeder said that any breeder that lets them go at 8 weeks should be shot!:p:eek: |
Shelby was 12 weeks and Seymour was 16 weeks. |
14 weeks, 5 months and 14 weeks. They were so well adjusted and healthy and I'm so blessed. :p |
10 weeks and no problems.... |
I got Hannah at 12 weeks. She was crate trained and had been well socialized. |
at 12 weeks the Yorkie puppies are ready to go any earlier and they may be too small. If they leave the litter too soon they do not learn from their litter mates how to react to other dogs. The larger breeds can go at 8/10 weeks but it depends on what the breeder is happy with. The first concern must be the health of the puppies. |
i got cassie at 10 weeks 8 years ago got jacey at 6 weeks 5 day back in october 2008 got taleigh at 10 weeks in december 2008 |
