The law in the UK is 8 weeks but its common for pups here to go home as young as 6 weeks.. I got Poppy at 6 weeks. I thought she was 8 weeks but turned out she was younger. |

I got all 3 of mine at 16 weeks |
A friend of mine got a very young puppy and was completely over whelmed. The puppy was barely eating hard food when the lady said she was ready to go home!! It was just awful!! The dog had an upset stomach from being away and the change in its diet. SO when it came time for me to get Claire, I would not buy a dog any less than 12 weeks old. I did some research and found out that yorkies are supposed to be 12 weeks before they are removed from their mother and littler mates. Claire was mostly crate trained and already eating regular puppy food. We had none of the problem my friend had with her very young puppy! I was glad that the breeder we got Claire from would have sold her puppies any younger. Claire was the second largest puppy and the first to leave her family! *at 12 weeks still!!* BTW she is now almost 11 lbs!! |
Boo at 6 weeks I got my boo boo tinkerbelle at 6 weeks as her mummy was sick. She is totally adorable and outgoing but she does think she is a cat !!! I have two cats and they all play and eat together !!! |

I got my female whe nshe was a pup around 20 weeks old my male he was 6 months old they now have babies 11 weeks old and still at home. While Iam looking for a home for the babies at 11 weeks Iam hoping to keep them for another week, I think 12 weeks is a good age to leave momma but a lot get there pups here in FL at 8 weeks old. |
I got my first yorkie at 8 wks 13 years ago from an inexperienced breeeder - I would not do that again!! I was very overwhelmed. Thankfully, I went to a specialty show, found an experienced show breeder who gave me advice on how to raise such a tiny baby. This second yorkie I got when she was 18 mo old from the show breeder who had helped me years ago. I would wait at least to 12 wks - I agree, it helps with socialization. |
Great response! It's not about who got their dog when. It's more about the importance of why a pup should not be removed earlier than 12 weeks. For those of you that got your puppies sooner and had no issues, that's fantastic. But do you all remember all those threads about potty training issues, excessive biting, and diet issues? (the last one includes some pups that don't even have teeth yet!) I've been on YT long enough to have seen many, many threads on people having issues with their young pups. Quote:
