Which is the best detangler and shampoo Hi I live in the UK and I wondered if anyone can recommend a good dog shampoo and detangler. I want something to make my baby's coat shiny and glossy and something to get the tangles out of her coat. I really struggle to get the tangles and knots out and she hates me doing it. Luv Franceen |
What i do is i use human shampoo and conditioner the same kind i use for myself after the shampoo use conditioner and it makes the knots so much easier to deal with. |

For shampoo, I use the Groomers range. Either Detangle, Evening Primrose, or Puppy for the young ones. They all work well, you can get them in Pets At Home etc. I don't use human shampoo as the PH is different, except for Johnson's Baby for their faces so it doesn't sting their eyes. I do use human conditioner though. Bit of a belt & braces person, so I use a rinse out one, any really, followed by a leave in conditioner. I've found VO5 leave in is very good. I also use a grooming spray if they've got a bit tangled up in between shampoos, Squirt Spray & Shine is brilliant. Sometimes I use Shaws Detangler spray, but don't like it so much, it can feel a bit sticky. |
Thank you all so much for the recommendations. I will try them, one by one, and see which works the best for her tangles. She seems to get little mats that are so hard to get out. I have to tug them out strand by strand, holding the base of the mat, so that she doesn't get hurt. They seem to be back in a couple of days! She is wearing her warm jerseys all the time now, as it is so chilly, and I think that this is giving her the mats, although I can't be sure. Does anyone else find that their little dogs get these mats? She is bathed once or twice a week and I find that the conditioner I used did not help to release the mats at all. I just have to sit down and take them out by hand. I can't use a comb as it hurts her. I brush her every day in the mornings and then put on her jersey, but brushing does not release the mats either. I am making it sound as though she is covered in matted hair but this is not the case!! It is just a few tufts here and there but, obviously, I don't want her to have any at all. I find the matts are worse when they are puppies. the puppy fluff seems to clog up near the skin, rather than down the hair shaft, & need to be brushed out every day. It almost seems to get worse as their coat is changing, then sorts itself out when the adult slky coat comes in & doesn't tangled nearly so much. except for round the elbows & behind the ears, & a bit more on the side they sleep on. I do think clothes make it worse. No matter how tangle free mine are before I put a jacket on, it can resemble a bird's nest when it comes off :( Harnesses do it to mine as well, though I know they're better for throats, no wonder the show Yorkies still wear show leads like my bigger ones do! |
Thanks for the reply, Meggie. Her mats are on the side that she sleeps on, now I come to think of it. She also has a harness and there are mats where that is too. At least I now know what is causing them, thanks. They are just so difficult to get out! Poor little thing has to be so patient, as I take them out slowly so as not to hurt her. She gets fed up with the whole thing. I am wondering if perhaps my brush is not a very good one for her coat. I got it at a pet store and it wasn't very expensive. Perhaps a better brush will help keep the mats out? Perhaps I should brush twice a day? I am clutching at straws now! She isn't a puppy - she is 4 years old - five in two months time. My Pixie's breeder told me that she uses Pantene conditioner, she shows at Crufts every year, so i have been using it too, it leaves Pixies coat very soft, shiny and it's easier to get rid of any tangles.:) |

Franceen, Perhaps your pup needs a good trim from the groomer. I found, as some others have suggested here, that the conditioner is the trick. I use Earthbath shampoo on Remi and either Pantene or Nexus conditioner. I have very little or no knots on my pup's hair at all! Good luck! Happy New Year to you across the pond! |

Franceen. If you can get hold of the Squirt Spray & Shine, I find that helps more than anything. I spray it on the coat before brushing, a bit extra on the tangled bits. It lubricates so the brush glides through more easily. If you can't get that, dipping the tips of the bristles in a little light oil, jojoba ( Body Shop) is best, or almond oil, is very similar. I don't use a pet brush. For first brush through of tangled coats I use a Kent pure bristle, a small one that's easy to manage round their little fiddly bits, got mine in Boots. Once the tangles are out I use an old silver backed pure bristle brush that I bought cheaply from an antique fair. I was recommended to use one of those by some friends who show Yorkies, they're softer than modern brushes & polish the coat to a lovely shine. You can get them really cheap at fairs. Most antique hunters want ones with the silver looking perfect, so ones that look a bit bashed in the silver department are dirt cheap but work just as well. I've picked up about half a dozen for my dogs & only paid about £10 for each. |
I use puppy shampoo and pantene conditioner... the pantene does work really well.. I just got my second yorkie and now I am running into the matting because they play together all day long - I am assuming anyway./. someone told me the spit from the dogs tangles up the other dogs hair.. I am going to try that spray and shine stuff though before I brush them out.. hopefully that helps |
Thank you both for some great ideas regarding shampoos and tangling. I will certainly try looking for the brush mentioned also. A groomer I know does not recommend the Pantene that I use. He says the PH balance is not correct. Anyone have any comments on this? Thanks! |
Thanks guys, for all these replies. I will definitely try and find Squirt Spray and Shine and I will look around the local antique shops etc. for the brushes. Thanks for these tips, Meggie. I did wonder if my brush was part of the problem. Last night I used a nylon brush with the bobble ends and she found this much more comfortable. It was easier to get out the tangles, but still took ages as I have to be so careful not to tug and hurt her. The Spray and Shine sounds like it is just what I need. I could spray each little tuft, as you say. Oh dear, I am not sure what to do about the Pantene now! I was going to get some today. I might try it anyway as a few of you recommended it, so obviously haven't had any problems with it. I will just keep looking out for a dog hair conditioner that works. Thanks again, everyone. I've heard about the PH in human things not being right but I've never found it a problem with conditioner. I don't use human shampoo often on the yorkies, though I do on my Skyes, who need muddy feet washing most days up here! :( If you want a good dog conditioner, there's one I've used in the past, bit awkward for me to get now. Can't remember the exact name, but I bought it from one of those big pet stores, Pets At Home I think. It was in a tall bottle, flattish, like squashed back to front, & it said on the front it was for long silky coats. It was like a pearlised pale pink, creamy liquid. There was a complete range of shampoos & conditioners in the same bottles. Sorry, not much help eh? But it did work well, it's just I don't get down to big shopping places much. |

This week I tried using some Shaw's Royal Coatalin. It's an old tin that I had in from using on my bigger dogs. It's a really old established product & a bit odd to use if you're not used to it as it's a solid block in a tin, looks a bit like a tin of clear shoe polish :D The best way is just to dab the end of the bristles of your brush on the block then brush it into the coat. I must say it's worked a treat! Their coats are lovely, glossy & silky. I thought it might have made them a bit greasy but it hasn't at all. It's really economical as well as a tin lasts ages. |

Thanks for the rec. Chellbe45. I have now got Vet Solutions Aloe and Oatmeal Shampoo, Chris Christensen Day by Day conditioner and Ice on Ice detangler. Her coat is shiny at last!
