Beware of Simba's Pride in Nevada Hi All, We recently purchased a puppy from Simba's Pride. When we met at the state border to pick up the puppy he was very listless and lethargic which we attributed to the long car ride etc. His health deteriorated and we took him to vet and they treated him for dehydration. We contacted the breeder and were told our little guy had thrown up a lot on the trip to meet us. Of course they did not tell us that when we paid for him. Before the first week was up he almost died twice --seizing etc. He literally spent the first two weeks at between the emrgency hospital and day vet. Diagnosis was hypoglocimia resulting from Giardia and tape worm. The vets all said he came with those parasites and to contact breeder. At first the breeder was very apologetic and offered to help with bills or give us a new pup if he died (not sure why they thought we wuld want another sick pup). Fortunately the little guy survived the ordeal and we have over $2,000 in vet bills. The breeder now says she will not help with anything. She wanted us to bring the puppy back to her for care when he was critical which of course was impossible because he could not have survived the trip.We have sought legal advice and fortunately should be able to recoup money. The problem is that the vets informed us that he either got giardia from his mother as a carrier or from the kennel. In our last conversation with the breeder she is not treating her dogs for giardia which means someone else may have to endure all this grief. Please help us get the word out. |
This is really something, and it sounds like a case where you can get your money back. Please keep us posted on the outcome and don't let her get away with this. I would have the state where she's from investigate her to, she can't continue to get away with this. |
Couple of quick questions to educate myself. I know yorkies are notorious for hypoglocimia which is low blood sugar, simiple honey on the gums can fix this level. But I am confused about the giardia causing hypo. Giardia is a bacteria that humans and animals receive from drinking water that has been contaminated with animal feces. And tape worms are from fleas. All is treatable, but I would be concerned about parents and what condition they were in. Before you purchased the pup did you request photos of sire and dam? I understand pups getting car sick, but not throwing them into dehydration. I would think the breeder after showing vet written confirmation would pay ALL expenses, because obviously they delivered an unhealthy pup. But then again what condition are the parents in? Just curious wanting to educate myself. Tinksmomok |

Hi, You are right about giardia. Most of the time a dog's immune system will fight it off but in small puppies it can create alot of problems. The giardia caused excessive diaharria which led to the problem of hypoglocemia. Yes the vet definitely said he came with it and being so young etc. it really got the best of him. The vet also said more than likely the mother is a carrier and he got it from nursing. There are lemon laws in Nevada that do hold her responsible so we are just filing in court as we speak. thanks for you interest. JL |
My Simba Experience I agree that this is probably more like a puppy mill than a "breeder," and I would discourage people from buying puppies from Simba's Pride. Last year we bought an adult dog from Simba's Pride. She was a breeder that they had decided to retire. She was described as "sweet" and "housebroken." She was neither. We essentially paid $500 for a rescue dog. We have spent over $1,000 on animal behaviorists and training. She has been described as having kennel syndrome. She has no social skills with people. She has horrible separation anxiety. She is extremely fearful of men, and particularly of men's shoes and feet. We think she was abused, or at best, neglected. After a lot of work, she is starting to act like a dog, but it has been a difficult and heartbreaking experience. I am sure there are many reputable breeders out there. Look for one. |

Puppies should be free of all parasites and well on their way after weaning and a good weight before they should be adopted out to a new home. Yes diahrrea and throwing up can caused dehydration very quickly in a small dog and even moreso a little puppy. It can make it worse if they then drink too much water as it will often increase vomiting and will throw off the electrolytes and balances of minerals such as potassium/sodium even more. Usually a subq fluid either under the skin or a drip in severe cases is required. Even in adult dogs prolonged fluid loss can be critical in these little breeds, the smaller the dog the higher the risk for permanent damage or death. |
Another Simba's Pride Story This thread confirms what I have suspected since we bought our one-year-old Yorkie from Simba's Pride in December 2006: we rescued our dog for $700. Days after we brought Fergie home, she was described by the vet as "undernourished" (less than 4 lbs). She also had open sores around her neck that the doctor attributed to fleas. Thankfully, her health was otherwise fine -- although her demeanor, we learned, was far from it. Fergie's disposition was identical to the previous post: "no social skills with people; horrible separation anxiety; and extremely fearful of men." She ran away from us constantly for the first two months and would regularly bark at my husband. She wouldn't play with us or her toys. She defecated everywhere. We also believed she had been abused or neglected. After five months of very dedicated work with her, she is now about 95% housebroken and has finally warmed to my husband. While she is still very timid around strangers (men, in particular), her weight is up as are her spirits. She is developing into a very sweet, loyal companion. My advice: shop around. |
Fergie, I'm so sorry that you had this experience, too. I know that you know how painful it is. Our dog is now on an antidepressant (Elavil) twice a day. She has been on for about a month. We are starting to see some improvements. For example, her separation anxiety seems to be lessening. We have worked very hard on her issues with men, but I don't know if she'll ever fully be normal. It causes a lot of tension in our home, but I can't think of sending her to a new home because our behaviorist said she would regress to the point she was at when we got her. We've invested too much in getting her this far. She can be very, very sweet and affectionate. I don't think she'll ever learn to "play." When she starts to play she freaks herself out! It's like she gets so excited and she doesn't know what to do with it so she stops and runs away. Anyway, she brings us happiness, sadness, and has taught us a LOT about patience! She loves other dogs, so we are thinking about getting a pal for her. I think that might make her happier, and may also provide a model for typical dog behavior. Good luck. |
My mom had started this post about my puppy Ruger, and i am so sorry to hear that other people have had problems with this breeder. i am in the process of taking them to court. I just wish i would have gotten information out here sooner so no one else had to suffer. Ruger is doing very well now and is the light of my life. I found it interesting that your dog had open sores from flea bites. When my dog had a worm (can't remember exactly what) it comes from fleas she told me they didn't have fleas in nevada! she must think i am crazy, a state that doesn't have fleas give me a break! I wouldn't give Ruger up for the world but i will never do busniess with these people again and i would advise others to stay clear. I was never even given the vet check even after i have requested it! |
OMG that is really disgusting and good for you putting the word out on them. That makes me sick they'd ship a sick puppy - that poor little thing.... To all of you that dealt with this awful sounding 'kennel'...Keep posting about it and I would also report them to the BBB and the local authorities because you really don't know if they're treating their other sick dogs....that's just pathetic they have to live that way... janlar3...how is your puppy now ?? |

When I got Sachi, he was flea ridden (came from Texas) and my vet didnt want to treat him because the fleas cannot survive in this environment and would end up dying. So when I saw your baby had flea bites I thought it was odd?? |
that is not true!! i Live in Nevada and I work at a vets office. True our winters are harsh and we dont get as much fleas, but we DO get them. And they are treatable just like fleas anywhere else. |
i am so sorry this happened. thanks for the insight |
