If i had to do it again... DISCLAIMER: This review is not a desperate/pathetic attempt to bash a breeder. I am merely outlining my experience with someone who claimed to do things differently...however after some time I realized that my dealings with her was not only a mistake but many LIES were told. I wish I would have listened to my better judgement and perhaps even been warned by someone else who had dealt with her. Since my story has not turned the right corner I figured I would use the resources available to help steer someone else in the right direction. The Breeder is: Kathy Owens (Oklahoma) The Kennel Name: Owensk9 Website: owensk9.net I have not been here for a while and in fact I had canceled my membership because of the rude encounters I had during my short time here...but now I realize that what must be done needs to be done. And I would feel awful not sharing my experience with those who are searching. So I am asking that rude comments be avoided and that this thread remains informative for all. I still have my puppy and I am working very hard to continue to give him a good home with lots of love and attention! He is coming along but I am still praying for a drastic turnaround with behavioral issues. Those issues are NOT his fault but more mine and the breeder involved. I do not need unnecessary input regarding what I did wrong because I have already acknowledged that...also I do not need anyone here to bash Kathy period and would appreciate any comments regarding her be from first hand experience. Thank you all! I received a pup from her last litter that was born January 2011 and Kam-O is the sire of the litter. If I had the chance to find a different breeder now, I would. I was promised a happy, healthy, energetic puppy. But upon his arrival I learned differently. (She told me she would call to see how the pick up from the airport went and she did not. She said she would leave her cell number since she was going to a dog show that same weekend and she did not. I sent pictures of him the first day we got him and sent them to her and to this very day I have not received an email from her or phone call from her asking about him. This is not the behavior of a caring breeder, nor of an innocent woman who knew nothing of her pups bad health and skittish behavior.) He arrived in the afternoon with loose stools. We thought he was just having a tough time from the flight being that he was quite lethargic and not interested in toys, food, or us. He merely wanted to sleep and wherever you laid him he stayed there for hours without moving very much. The very next morning I had to rush to the vet because he had a lot of blood coming from his bottom. Not just in his stool but I actually wiped his bottom and the entire tissue came up bloody. My vet wanted to see the Health Certificate and shot record he came with and was astonished at the vagueness of the certificate. He said Oklahoma must not have strict guidelines. I agreed because it had nothing on it regarding his shot records or anything; Just his weight, sex, DOB, and overall appearance. Not to mention the shot record she sent was a poorly typed word document and nothing official with a vet’s card or even the deworming stickers that you normally see from a reputable breeder. He then found that he in fact was battle a bad case of Coccidia. And that it had to have been picked up in the care of the breeder since it takes weeks for the symptoms to show. He also stated that the possibility of Kathy keeping them in unclean conditions is quite high. Shocked I took him home with albon, prescription GI food to stimulate his appetite, and strict guidelines. It took about 2 weeks for his stools to finally harden up but his energy level was still quite low. Before I paid the deposit she was excellent. I normally get a vibe from a person that isn’t off, but Kathy had me fooled. After the deposit was paid and worse, after I had completely paid for the pup she became less and less available for me to talk to. She was rude about me calling her and told she actually preferred email, but when you are getting a pup from states away and whom you have never met it is more soothing to hear the persons voice. She complained about long distance but she had my money already and so I felt that I shouldn’t be punished for her lack of long distance calling. She sells her pups on a website that can be accessed from any where in the world and you would think she knows that people will not all come from Oklahoma. I wish I would have looked at all the signs that you are supposed to when searching for a reputable breeder but because the conversation went so well, I figured she was still a keeper. I blame myself for not visiting her facility before purchasing a pup from her, but I truly thought she was looking out for the best interest of the pups and new owners. The pups are not raised in her home but instead in a kennel. I did not think this was too much of a big deal until I actually got my pup. He trembles in fear of all the normal household noises. He cannot even walk through a door without some coaxing. And upon getting him he was just afraid of our regular speaking voices, the sounds of bags, etc. I am not going to say he was previously struck but if we try to reach down to pick him up he cowers and yelps as though he has been beaten. We have had him for almost 3 months now and he is still in need of diligent conditional training so that he doesn’t become overwhelmed. And for those who haven't please Google "Kathy Owens site:yorkietalk.com" ←There you will find out more information about her attitude and demeanor regarding her dogs as well as her genetic testing. She does not genetically test her dogs. I am also looking into reporting her to the AKC. My warning to all is to: RUN AWAY FROM THIS BREEDER UNLESS YOU ARE ABLE TO DEAL WITH HER UNCARING ATTITUDE TOWARDS THE CARE AND HEALTH OF HER PUPS! SAVE THE HEARTACHE AND FIND A DIFFERENT BREEDER! PS- I have documents to support all of this stated in my review and would have no problem furnishing the proof as support. I am also able to screenshot emails she has sent to me. |
Thanks for sharing this!! I know there's someone who was asking about this breeder! Perfect timing! I hope your baby will turn out fine! I know it's really hard to deal with this kind of stuff along with school. Once it's over, you and the pup=inseparable! ;) Stay with YT, just ignore the rude comments because they really ain't worth your time. |
My parents got a toy poodle under similar circumstances, she was flown in, breeder was very talkative before the sale and then became nonexistent- we are almost positive she must have been raised in a kennel. She is about to turn 5 and she has made such huge changes over the years- she still cowers if people reach down to pick her up too quickly, but otherwise she has learned to live in a house perfectly and she has turned into a great little dog- so stick with what your doing, the key is lots of love and patience- good luck :) |
Thank You So Much! I was almost certain that I would be ridiculed for my poor decision so it feels good to hear words of encouragement instead. I am sticking it out with little Niko. He did not ask to be here and so it is not his fault that he arrived under the circumstances he has. He is a ball of love and I am happy to have him... I just don't want this breeder to profit under these conditions. If she must breed she must CARE! And I have spoken to someone who was thinking of buying from her....and I am very happy I got that opportunity! |
I think we have to look at everything as a learning process. I know that I have learned so much from being on YT. We all have done things the first time around that we learned from. Can I ask where in OK this lady is? Just curious. |
You are so Right! Quote:
It has left a bad taste in my mouth about Oklahoma breeders. I have since done some research after my experience with her and I realize that OK has a major puppymill/BYB problem. I can't say whether or not she falls under that category but she definitely doesn't care about her pups health or well being; just a poor representative of the yorkshire terrier breeding community IMHO. http://http://www.puppyfind.com/revi...f5537859c5e78f ^ a link to her current pups as well as her breeding reviews! |

That was exactly what I was getting at. They do have a serious problem. I have been looking into getting a rescue. Oklahoma has lots of them. So, she could be or might not be. I did check out the site. Some of the breeding females were small. Kinda made me sad. :( Really sad that she doesn't care about them. I don't get it. |
Can't get it to work I cant get the link to work for me but perhaps someone else can. But if you google "puppyfind.com Kathy Owens". |
Extremely Upsetting! Quote:
Now I can go and narrow my search to OK on puppyfind.com and 1 out 5 (and that's being generous), is a mill or BYB...and that is from reading and/or visiting their site ONLY! If I were searching again I would avoid OK, AK, & PA at all costs! |

You won't believe this... KATHY ACTUALLY EMAILED ME! After every attempt I made to get in contact with her. Phone calls and email alike...she finally emails me after finding the review I left for her! She claims that her vet did not find anything wrong with him and he must have picked it up at my house. My house that he was in for all of 14 hours. Here is part of an article from Coccidia (Coccidiosis) in Dogs: A Cause of Diarrhea A puppy is not born with the coccidia organisms in his intestine. However, once born, the puppy is frequently exposed to his mother's feces, and if the mother is shedding the infective cysts in her feces, then the young animals will likely ingest them and coccidia will develop within the young animal's intestines. Since young puppies, usually those less than six months of age, have no immunity to coccidia, the organisms reproduce in great numbers and parasitize the young animal's intestines. Oftentimes, this has severe effects. From exposure to the coccidia in feces to the onset of the illness is about 13 days. Most puppies who are ill from coccidia are, therefore, two weeks of age and older. Although most infections are the result of spread from the mother, this is not always the case. Any infected puppy or kitten is contagious to other puppies or kittens. In breeding facilities, shelters, animal hospitals, etc., it is wise to isolate those infected from those that are not. As I told her this morning. She was through with Niko and me as soon as he left her presence. And she STILL has not asked about him! Not even once! |
Additional Information I was told that her copy of his vet records is something she will be searching for to post for all to see. Well, I really don't mind putting up the day he flew, the medication bottle with the date on it, the receipt from the vet, as well as the vet findings/examination results the morning after getting him. I can also screenshot emails but I am trying to refrain from this due to my wanting to keep her privacy in perspective. Also, I should state: I am not in any way, shape, or form profiting or benefiting from giving this review. I am not a breeder and thus feel no need to compete with her. I am not asking for my money back. I am definitely not asking for a new puppy. The only "profit" you can say I am getting is preventing someone else from making a mistake that could be costly...as it has for me. Just because they show doesn't mean they care. |

I am Kathy Owens and you Brooke never contacted me about this sick puppy---you are makeing this up---I have Vet papers and Air bill when the pup was shipped---I can't remember saying I call may be I did and I forgot--but I have always been available to talk to anyone noght or day about one of my pups. ANY ONE can make statements---false or other wise about anyone else. If this pup had coccidia why was I not contacted---you had my phone number and my email !! WHY !! My vet did a fecal on this whole litter and NOTHING was found---sorry the Vet bill does not show a fecal---but he always does one---always !! And NONE of the other pups in the same litter had any problems---why is that ?? You just want to gripe and groan !! You got a lovely puppy for $600. Champion sire I might add !! Who else would sell a puppy so cheap--I thought you would be a good home---sorry I'm wrong !! May be it's you that has the little thig in terror !! See the attachments of Vet records. MY VET gave them a clean bill of health and filled out shipping/health papers !! |
So sorry that Niko was sick. Coccidia is a single cell parasite that is transmitted in feces. It takes 14 days from infection to showing symptoms of the disease, though it can be present for awhile in the GI tract and not present symptoms until the puppy is put under stress, such as traveling and changing owners. It's something that all new owners need to be on the look out for because a pup with diarrhea can become dehydrated very quickly and suffer serious complications. |
YOu HAVE CROSSED THE LINE Quote:
You need to PM admin and have my personal information taken down. My address nor phone number is not pertinent to this thread. I will have a lawyer involved if it is not taken down. I have given you all the respect to privacy in the world and now I expect the same! |
Thank You! Quote:

I guess I should move and change my number as well...:( |
Proof.... 2 Attachment(s) This is evidence that my claim is real. I left the office name but removed the address, vets name, my address, and number. This information is not pertinent and I cannot fabricate something like this. |
Admin You Rock! Thank you for removing my personal information from the web. No one should be violated in such a manner and you do an excellent job at caring for your YT'ers! I am getting more documents together. I did not include the vet's name because he has nothing to do with this. I wouldn't mind but I do not want his business to be affected in any way. |
Ugh, I'm sorry you have to deal with a breeder like this!! I had to deal with a vet similar to this. It's just so much unnecessary BS! |
I hope Niko improves each day. As he spends more time with you, he will become more secure and less skittish. Just give him lots of lovin!:) Good Luck! |
Thank you ladies! Quote:

I think is it obvious from your post that your little Nikko came to you not well. Your posting of your vet documents further seals my opinion of your situation. I hope that he continues to get well and has a long and happy life with you and your fiance. I'm curious as to what happened in the past. YT is a great resource to Yorkie owners and I could not imagine ever leaving. Did someone tell you not to purchase your puppy from this breeder? Quote:
