New Guy looking for advise Hi everyone, We are about to become new dog owners. The driving force behind this whole process are my kids. We narrowed it down to two breeds: Yorkie and Chiwawa with Yorkie by far being my first choice. We owned a dog before so I am well aware of the responsibilities that come with the territory. The kids are older now and will be for the most parts responsible for the day to day. I think one of my kids are mildly allergic to dogs since when we visit our friend with the lab, she starts sneezing, itchy eyes, etc. I did my fair share of research on line, but would like to hear from the owners. What do you think in terms of our choices, any words of wisdom would be appreciated. Also, looking for a breeder recommendation in northern NJ / eastern PA. Thank you. |
I think chihuahaus are cute but very yappy. I prefer yorkies |
Please be sure to check out the YTCA website for breeder information. Be careful in PA as there are many backyard breeders. NY can also be very expensive so be sure to check out the website. Don't look for the cheapest dog either as you get what you pay for and it you research this site you will see that some people who tried to save ended up spending thousands in vet bills. |

There is a lot of grooming with yorkies, daily brushing, combing, cleaning out eye gunk, etc. I understand you want your children to be responsible and want one that wont affect their allergies, with yorkies you can still have allergies, I myself suffer from dog allergies, I have to be careful with washing my hands after grooming etc. So its no guarantee. Actually Poodles medium sized are very sturdy dogs and affect the allergies much less, that is why my first two dogs are yorkie-poos. You'll find them more agreeable to children. I guess I need to clarify, I am talking about teenagers, not small kids. Don't expect any issues, not to mention that I'll keep an eye on it as well. |
I know yorkies are considered hypoallergenic dogs, but honestly, there is no dog out there that will not cause a reaction. I'm allergic to cats and dogs, but I find myself still having a reaction to my little guy, but it's mild and I wouldn't give him up. Just something to think about. |
Not sure what you mean by the kids will be responsible for the Day to Day but you need to be aware that yorkies can be very sensitive to lots of things ie allergies, bug bites, hypoglycemia. Often kids forget to feed at the appropriate times & this is not a good thing for a little dog as they can become hypoglycemic. Also stools need to be checked Daily to be sure the pup isn't having diarrhea as they can also dehydrate quickly just like a human infant. Just be sure to read up & do all your homework before you get your pup to ensure the health & safety of your new family member. Oh and Welcome to YT.:) |

Don't let yourself be scared away from the yorkie if that's what you want. Alot of it is just a matter of personal opinion. My kids were 5 & 3 when they got their first yorkie and grew up with her. They loved having a little dog and I think it made them more conscious of being gentle with all small animals. They are now in college & bought me my newest yorkie just this past January. I'm sure your teenage kids will be fine with a small pup. Yes, yorkies do require a little more grooming than some dogs...but it's well worth the effort...just look at how cute they are :p Best of luck with your search for your new yorkie puppy :) |

Welcome to Yorkietalk! My yorkie has been the best dog breed I have ever owned. A yorkie will bring lots of love to your home. My son in law is allergic to dogs, but Copper doesn't seem to bother him. Good luck with your choice. |

I grew up with Chi's (first dog when I was 3 was a Chi...obviously the family dog and not my responsibility :)) but I like to point out that you can have small children and small dogs if both are always supervised! I developed allergies to my Chi's, and now have a Yorkie and Schnauzer. Neither one bothers me unless I'm clipping...but that is only once every 3/4 weeks. I often look at the Chi rescues, and have contemplated taking on another one...I love that small dog personality, but training is key as it is for any dog. |

I would also like to point out that as with the Yorkshire Terrier Breed, the Chihuahua breed has lots of the same health issues and with Any breed there are way too many unscrupulous breeders out there so just be very careful choosing a breeder. There are Many good breeders here on YT and many members have purchased from them and they have very happy HEALTHY pups. If you go to the breeders section & the pups for sale section & do some research you will see who they are. I do know that good breeders often will not sell to people with very small children & rightfully so but your kids are teenagers so that shouldn't be a problem. It's really a safety issue for these tiny fragile dogs. I hope this helps. Whatever breed you decide on we would love to have you stay as YT isn't just for yorkies, it's for people who Love their dogs & want to educate their selves & share pics & stories of our Little Loves.;) |
Hi. Welcome to YT! I just saw this thread. Not sure if you have found a breeder yet. I would highly recommend checking the Yorkshire Terrier Club of America's website, ytca.org. They are a very reputable breeders' association. They have a breeder referral page on their site helping people find reputable breeders in their state/area. |
Have another question. What is parti or golden Yorkie means? Is it still considered to be a pure breed? I prefer a traditional blue and tan coat. Thank you. |

Some childless people should never own a pet themselves (big or small). Just hate when ALL kids are lump summed into a category. I have a teenage Daughter and she LOVES my dog, however the dog is in my care most of the time. I honestly don't trust her to take her for walks even though she is nearly 16 years old. Other then " love " her I don't let her do to much as I like to monitor her food intake. I don't even like her to give her treats unless I supervise. At 16 she is in school all day , busy with friends on the weekends and I would say she would not be a good dog " owner" at this point nor does she have the time needed to care for our dog. My daughter is very good with the dog, she loves her , brushes her and does her hair but is to busy to be in charge of a dog. However I do think teenagers are fine around yorkies, she is gentle, loving and watches out for her. :thumbup: |
Have you checked the Yorkies for sale section here on YT ? as that will show some of the diff colors. You can also do a search for a specific color & you will see the diff colors. I like the Parties & the Biewers myself, never had either but I think they are beautiful. |

I agree! My parents already had 2 yorkies before my siblings and I were born and neither the kids nor the dogs were ever injured. In fact, it was a wonderful experience to grow up with them and I considered Chelsea (the female) to be my best friend. I've raised my own children with dogs as well and never had any problems. The free feeding does work most often but does Not work for my Sparky as for some reason he really doesn't like food, Any food. I basically have to stand over him & tell him " Eat your food Sparky, Eat your food ". The OP will just have to try free feeding & hopefully it works but if not , try whatever will work for that particular dog. |

Thanks for all the replies. I have one more question. I understand that young pups go to their new homes at around 12 weeks. What is a downside, if any, to bringing home a slightly older dog. Lets say 6-8 months? I really don't see any problems with this but want to see if I am missing something. I always told my wife that we could have as many kids as she wants as long as they show up at home at the age of 2, this is kinda similar :) |
