Should I???? I have been studding out my Yorkie and someone asked to breed my Yorkie with their shih tzu. Is this bad? |
No, I would not if I were you. What would be the point? What would you be trying to achieve? |
Yes it would. |
I wouldnt do it. There are enough mixes at the shelters why contribute to it |
I wasn't sure, i looked on the internet and it seemed like a lot of people liked them and wanted them. I wasn't sure if it was bad for my dog to mate with another breed. |
Their called shorkies and they are cute enough but do you want to breed a designer dog? Does the females owner know what she doing? Id hate for someone to have someone having puppies because they are "cute". |
I haven't talked to her much, she just asked today. I will find out why. But would it do anything to my baby? |

it would not hurt your dog if you did stud him as long as all the health test have been..because dogs can get std's. some people will tell you no to do it b/c its mixing and their opinion is that mixing is wrong some people will say go for it, they are adorable puppies and they are popular and they sell very quickly (i have a friend that had a litter 2 weeks ago and 3 out of 5 are spoken for already) its what you want to do..no one else matters but it is good to educate yourself first on breeding and so forth |

I wouldn't do it. It won't hurt your dog, but IMO there are enough mixed breeds out there and people dont' need to be creating more. |

well there is a thing called supply and demand..if people didnt want the designer breeds people wouldnt be mixing at the rate they do. and i would think most peopple who do breed enjoy the breeding and the puppies and the money is a plus. but of course people breed them because people want them, thats why anyone breeds. of course purebred breeder breed to keep the standard and have additional puppies for themselves but they also sell the puppies because they dont want to keep 5 puppies everytime. and if people didnt breed dogs then other families wouldnt have the opportunties to have dogs they desire. how many members are on here? thousands and almost all of them have yorkies, most have multiple yorkies. if people didnt bred to sell to the public then i dont think their would be many people on this forum. and that would be a shame let me add that i do not agree with puppy mills at all.. i agree there are alot of mixed dogs in the pounds that deserve good homes but are they desirable? most arent. whenever i visit the shelters here its nothing that i would consider (just being honest)..sometimes on petfinder i will see really great looking dogs but they are usually not local and they still charge the same amount as if purchasing from someone who bred them..also once the shelter actually approves you, which face it doest happen when there are kids involved, you will most likely bring home a young adult or adult with some possible baggage..i'd personally perfer the puppy with no baggage who can grow with my family and not the other way around...jmo |

Very many of the dogs in shelters are desirable. Over 1/3 of dogs in shelters are purebred. I got a "designer dog" - yorkie/chi mix from my shelter, no screening process I just paid my $60 and she was mine. There are tons of pups in the shelters and rescues around here. My best friend just got a shih/maltese mix puppy from the local rescue for $175. There are plenty of purebred adults in shelters as well, most with "no baggage". Most dogs aren't in shelters b/c they are bad dogs with baggage, most are there because of stupid owners. I personally have fostered a 4lb middle aged poodle, a teeny 10 wk old poodle puppy, a JRT/poodle mix puppy, and a purebred chi puppy. All turned into the shelter because their owners weren't very smart and didn't think things through before getting a dog. |

well here there are hardly ever any small cute breeds in shelters here. trust me i volunteer at one as well as my mom, for many years and occasionally we will get a chiuahuah or a poodle they dont even make it to the available listing, we had a yorki-poo one time and a volunteer kept that one. its always lab mixes, pit mixes (lots of pits mixes) shepherds, beagle..and for me thats not something i would be interested in. sure sometimes there are puppies available but not very often here. its like i said i see some on petfinders but they are never local.. |
I think the type dogs you find in shelters is regional. (And I know I've had this conversation here before.) Here, the smaller dogs overcrowd and the lab mixes are the first to find homes. At PetSmart adoption days, they say they always bring labs, beagles and hounds because they know they will be able to place them. And you rarely see a purebred of anykind in a shelter unless it is really sick or something like that. |
supply and demand is what it is and some people dont like it but thats part of the world i agree that its unfair that a shelter dog with baggage didnt start out that way and it isnt their fault. and that there are a lot of ignorant people who abuse, and drop off dogs... |
We always have alot of smaller mixed breeds at our shelters when Ive been there |

I have a page dedicated to my thoughts on this subject. There are 2 interesting links on the bottom that will help you with your educated decision. I checked them and the links are still up as of today.:aimeeyork http://www.tx2stepnyorkies.com/designerdogs.html |

I've been reading this thread and the bottom line is: Being humans we all tend to find justification for what we do....whether it be posting our question on an open forum to obtain validation from others or to obtain input. What ever our reasons, in the end we all do what we want, whether correct or not we have to live with ourselves and take the responsibilty of our decisions. The best we can do is be honest with ourselves and why we are doing what we do. Breeding to satisfy the market on these dogs, only says one thing to me, it's about the money. |
IMO i would not do it. I don't know anything about breeding but i can tell you that if i want a yorkie baby i will just get a yorkie baby. If i want both yorkie and s**tzu. I will get one of each but i don't think i want the mix of both. |
I wouldn't!:( |

I see threads such as this one and I cringe....not because I want to save the world....because of indiscriminate breeding Animal legislation is being attempted to be put into place.....If we aren't careful in breeding.....the option of being a pet owner, breeder, exhibitor will be taken out of our hands......Do we want big brother in this aspect of our lives too.........heck! I can't even go to a fast food resturant and order great greasy fries anymore....that's been taken out of my choices too........If I would have wanted health food, I'd have gone to a health food store. |
