New to the breed, need some advice.... Hello,I'm relativley new to the breed and I'd eventually like to breed my female Yorkie,Pebbles. Since I'd like to know what I am doing before she gets pregnant,I need some advice and or tips before I start. Thank you! Colleen & Pebbles |
breeding Welcome to YT...I give you the same advise as I give all...search the archives for breeding info...it can not be said in one thread..but the first step is to be sure your bitch is breed quality....no use wasting your time if she does not have the conformation and pedigree to produce puppies to be proud of...after all you will be responsible for the health, temperament, quality of the litter..best wishes |

Thanks... Pebbles is AKC registered, she has papers so she is good quality I guess. Should I ask her breeder for advice too? She could be of good help too. How long after her heat cycle should I atempt to mate her? What about the stud dog too? Should I have any special requirements as well? |
Just being AKC registered doesn't mean she's good enough quality to be bred. There are many AKC registered dogs out there that are way off the standard. The only way to really know is to have her judged in a show ring or evaluated by an expert. |
AKC Registered dogs does not always mean quality.....Study, study, study, learn everything you can about breeding, whelping, the standard, and pedigrees.....And the first thing you should ask yourself prior to breeding, are you prepared to lose your female? To answer one of your questions....you don't begin breeding a female prior to the age of 18 months.... |
Checked out some books the other day...... Hello, I checked out some books at the library the other day about the breed and it's genetic defects and welping. Could you really lose your female? C-sections have become more popular, my friend's Shih Tzu had one for her litter, I don't know if I want one though...how much is the average cost of a styud dog fee? Thank you so much for all your help! |

Reading about the breed and whelping is a start, attending seminars, classes is your next step, learning the standard inside and out is another step......There is also the cost of prebreeding tests.....Stud Fees vary from region to region, pedigree and demand of the stud. |
Do you know the bloodlines or have a pedigree on your girl? Have you ever had her evaluated by a judge or experienced breeder/exhibitor? Who is the breeder? Going to shows and trying to find a reputable show person in your area to mentor you would be the best way to start. |

My breeder's name... Hi, my breeder's name is Catherine Thomas. She is very picky about where she places her puppies and she has a lot of requirements such as I must keep in touch with her atleast twice a week and I wasn't allowed to take Pebbles home until she was fifteen weeks old. I am not able to make it to NYC anytime soon because I live in Montana, anyone know of any seminars or clubs out here? I'm going to look it up on the AKC website later on. Pebbles is exacty two, is she old enough to have her first litter? |
More About Pebbles... She has a pedigree, and is AKC registered and was Champion Sired. She wasn't ever evaulated by a judge or expert but she still could be, couldn't she? I want to produce the best possible puppies and in order to produce the best possible puppies, I need the best possible stud dog whom I'm still in search for.... |
I don't know if someone already wrote this but here is what I would look for in Pebbles. Does she have roachback? Are her ears the right size? Does she have a nice coat the parts down the middle? Does she have an underbite or overbite? How much does she weigh? Does she come from a line of free whelpers? Has she been tested for liver disease? Are her lines clear of any and all liver disease? Does she have Luxating Patella? Have her eyes and ears been checked? Have her hips and knees been checked? Has she been checked for STDs? All of these questions go for the male too. Happy Breeding!:) |

In regards to c-sections, some female do require one in order to safely deliver the pups. If you vet advises they they feel ahead of time that your female will have to have one, then she is not a good candidate for breeding. A c-section is not an option or preference you choose--a female should only have a section when it is the ONLY option for safe delivery for both her and the pups...a last resort, if you will.:) |
Pebbles cont. I don't know if someone already wrote this but here is what I would look for in Pebbles. Does she have roachback?-? unsure of what that is... Are her ears the right size? What would be the right size, they aren't too big I'm still unsure Does she have a nice coat the parts down the middle?-yes, it's not long though Does she have an underbite or overbite?-underbite How much does she weigh?-4 1/3lbs Does she come from a line of free whelpers?Don't konw what it/they are Has she been tested for liver disease?Yes, positive Are her lines clear of any and all liver disease?-Yes Does she have Luxating Patella?-No Have her eyes and ears been checked?-Yes Have her hips and knees been checked?-Yes Has she been checked for STDs?-Yes All of these questions go for the male too. |
She really should be no less than 5lbs. to breed. Is her back straight? Or does she have a hump in the middle or a dip? You said she has an underbite... that's not a good thing. And she tested positive for liver disease?? I would never, ever breed a female with these faults. JMHO, I'm really not trying to be mean. I would seriously have her evaluated and I would talk to the breeder about the liver disease. |
Colleen, this is a really good explanation about what makes a responsible breeder. Go through each category and see if you can answer "yes" to every one of them. http://www.geocities.com/Petsburgh/Fair/1901/chart.html |

If you are unsure of any of these questions....My suggestion is that you need to know them before you ever contemplate breeding. Start with reading the standard and go from there. |
I don't know if someone already wrote this but here is what I would look for in Pebbles. Does she have roachback?-? unsure of what that is... Are her ears the right size? What would be the right size, they aren't too big I'm still unsure. Head Does she have an underbite or overbite?-underbite Small and rather flat on top, the skull not too prominent or round, the muzzle not too long, with the bite neither undershot nor overshot and teeth sound. Either scissors bite or level bite is acceptable. The nose is black. Eyes are medium in size and not too prominent; dark in color and sparkling with a sharp, intelligent expression. Eye rims are dark. Ears are small, V-shaped, carried erect and set not too far apart. Does she have a nice coat the parts down the middle?-yes, it's not long though Coat . Quality, texture and quantity of coat are of prime importance. Hair is glossy, fine and silky in texture. Coat on the body is moderately long and perfectly straight (not wavy). It may be trimmed to floor length to give ease of movement and a neater appearance, if desired. The fall on the head is long, tied with one bow in center of head or parted in the middle and tied with two bows. Hair on muzzle is very long. Hair should be trimmed short on tips of ears and may be trimmed on feet to give them a neat appearance. How much does she weigh?-4 1/3lbs Does she come from a line of free whelpers? This means do the females that came before her; Dam/Granddam/Great GrandDam/Great Granddam give birthwithout c-sections Has she been tested for liver disease?Yes, positive (she tested positive)....shouldn't be bred at all Are her lines clear of any and all liver disease?-Yes Does she have Luxating Patella?-No (was deemed totally clear and do you have the documentation with your vet's results)Have her eyes and ears been checked?-Were these Checked by Specialists Have her hips and knees been checked?-Checked by orthopedic Specialists Has she been checked for STDs?-Yes. was a smear performed on her. Documentation of said tests....However, this test must be performed just prior to breeding. All of these questions go for the male too |
