New to the breed,need some advice....
 
Hello,I'm relativley new to the breed and I'd eventually like to breed my female Yorkie,Pebbles. Since I'd like to know what I am doing before she gets pregnant,I need some advice and or tips before I start. Thank you!

Welcome to YT...I give you the same advise as I give all...search the archives for breeding info...it can not be said in one thread..but the first step is to be sure your bitch is breed quality....no use wasting your time if she does not have the conformation and pedigree to produce puppies to be proud of...after all you will be responsible for the health, temperament, quality of the litter..best wishes

Pebbles is AKC registered,she has papers so she is good quality I guess. Should I ask her breeder for advice too? She could be of good help too. How long after her heat cycle should I atempt to mate her? What about the stud dog too? Should I have any special requirements as well?

Just being AKC registered doesn't mean she's good enough quality to be bred. There are many AKC registered dogs out there that are way off the standard. The only way to really know is to have her judged in a show ring or evaluated by an expert.

AKC Registered dogs does not always mean quality.....Study, study, study, learn everything you can about breeding, whelping, the standard, and pedigrees.....And the first thing you should ask yourself prior to breeding, are you prepared to lose your female?

To answer one of your questions....you don't begin breeding a female prior to the age of 18 months....

Hello, I checked out some books at the library the other day about the breed and it's genetic defects and welping. Could you really lose your female? C-sections have become more popular, my friend's Shih Tzu had one for her litter, I don't know if I want one though...how much is the average cost of a styud dog fee? Thank you so much for all your help!

Yes, you could loose your female. C-sections by appointment are not recommended by most reputable vet's or breeders. Why would you want to add a C-section fee to the cost of a stud fee and the average cost of breeding and raising a litter.

Reading about the breed and whelping is a start, attending seminars, classes is your next step, learning the standard inside and out is another step......There is also the cost of prebreeding tests.....Stud Fees vary from region to region, pedigree and demand of the stud.

Do you know the bloodlines or have a pedigree on your girl? Have you ever had her evaluated by a judge or experienced breeder/exhibitor? Who is the breeder? Going to shows and trying to find a reputable show person in your area to mentor you would be the best way to start.

i always learn so much from you!!! in this post you said to attend seminars and since we both live in california do you know where are any being held??? Once again i would like to thank you in advance your and angel when it comes to helping ppl!!!!!!!!!!

Carmen Battaglia has wonderful seminars "breeding better dogs" Do a google search on him...You will also find that Kennel Clubs will sponsor them. You can also go online to the AKC do a search on Seminars. I know that Dr. Susan Centers (founder of the bile acid tests) is doing a Seminar at the NY shows on Liver Shunt. She is now conducting research on identifying a DNA marker, how wonderful will that be. We will be able to test our dogs to find out if they are carriers or clear.

My breeder's name...
 
Hi, my breeder's name is Catherine Thomas. She is very picky about where she places her puppies and she has a lot of requirements such as I must keep in touch with her atleast twice a week and I wasn't allowed to take Pebbles home until she was fifteen weeks old. I am not able to make it to NYC anytime soon because I live in Montana, anyone know of any seminars or clubs out here? I'm going to look it up on the AKC website later on. Pebbles is exacty two, is she old enough to have her first litter?
