when to start breeding?
 
My little yorkie is only 8 months old and had no intention of breeding her so young but I have a male Yorkie that I was keeping apart from her that managed somehow to slip our guard and literally in a matter of seconds they were stuck and well from that point there was nothing I could do. I now truly understand the term "like a dog on heat...". Not that this is a laughing matter.

Anyway my question is, although not ideal is this dangerous or will it be detrimental to her health? Does anyone have suggestions or answers to my question? I would appreciate any help...

first i would like to welcome you to yorkie talk.... okay so you say they tied well she might very well be pregnant she is very young to be be breeding im asuming this is her first heat just make sure you take her to the vet and have her checked out how much does she weigh?? if she is too small under 5 pounds it could be a health risk for your baby

It depends on her size, build, weight, etc, not to mention his size, weight, etc. There are more factors to consider than just her age....

Your little girl is WAY TO YOUNG to have a litter of pups!!!!
I would have her spayed and problem solved.

ohhhhh that poor baby. you need to let your vet know asap. normally you do not breed them until they have had their 2nd heat or 18 months old.

I'd be taking her to the vet ASAP...have her spayed and a hard lesson learned. She's WAY to young to have a litter of puppies....in my opinion it doesn't matter the size of the male or female she's not mature enough to have puppies! I was watching on Animal Planet and they had a 8 month old larger female of another breed and she died because she was WAY to young to have babies

When our girls are in heat and we do not want them PG.WE have gates upon gates and doors closed as to no ACCIDENTS can happen.Boys go out with just the boys and girls go out with just the girls.
Boys are fast and can be on a female in seconds,so to just supervise them is not an option they have to be seperated,especially the PUPPIES that are having their first heat!
Ask yoru vet about a missmate shot if you will not have her spayed it needs to be given in the first 10 days or 7 days,it is hard on them also but that is really the only 2 options I would give myself if it was me.

It wasnt just supervised they were seperated but somehow he managed to open the sliding door, something he`s never been able to do...

whats a missmate shot, is that like the morning after for dogs....?

She's old enough to have spayed so that would be a better option so this wouldn't happen again "by mistake" JMHO

A missmate shot will terminate her pregnancy but it has to be done like now!!I would discuss this option with your vet I am sure he would rather have a shot or spay her then to let her have a litter at 10 months old.

is it a pill i never knew they had this for dogs i learn something new every day!!!!

Ouch! I saw nothing wrong with the advice she gave you. :confused: She was just telling the honest truth. Breeding is not something to be taken lightly and the facts aren't always what you want to hear or pleasant. What she said was very good advice from a very experienced, respected breeder.:(

its not that i do not appreciate advice, i do! otherwise i wouldn`t be on here... but putting "by mistake" in inverted comma`s makes it condescending, if its just incorrect use of grammar and that isn`t what you meant then thats different.

You shouldn't bee upset by the advice you have been given and comma's don't always mean condescending. For instance, we see far too many "mistakes" here on this board and that is all I am going to say about it. Take it as you will.

To the OP, talk to your vet about the shot. I know that I talked to my vet about it once because of the question that was asked on here and he deals with small breed dogs all the time and is VERY open/honest and knowledgable.

He does NOT recommend the shot to yorkies (or other small breeds) because he said the shot can actually kill some dogs.

Some vets will give it and some will not.
Dont know what my vet would do about it if it was one of mine ,never had an accident happen to me.
But I do know he gave a missmate to a small rat terrier (7 pounds) last year she was bred by a blue healer.Seen the owner this year they live right by the vets,and she had a litter of little rat terriers this summer. I do know it is the same dose for a small dog as a large one.

The commas were not a mis use of grammar "mistake" is what it was I'm assuming by your post and still my advice is to spay the yorkie, pregnant at 8 months is too young period! And the reason I picked this quote is because Sugar would be correct :)

I was just going to post what you said...glad I decided to go back and read everything....

Yes, the shot has been known to cause adverse reactions; death, render a bitch sterile, etce.....Donna's recommendation of spaying on a bitch this young would be my action.....(nothing condesending at all, just the best recommendation for a young one such as this).

Hmmm...that's exactly what I was thinking. I've always known them to be quotation marks and I'm sitting here scratching my head wondering if someone changed the name from quotation marks to "inverted commas"!
