C/Sections?? I know there's several things that factor in, but as a breeder, what is the max amount of c/sections that you would let your girl have before spaying? This is based on her being able to free whelp along with having to have a c/section because of a puppy being sideways, etc. I've heard different opinions from breeders and vets and would also like the opinions of the breeders on this thread. Thanks for your expertise. |
Well for me, personaly...I started out breeding Chi's. She had a c section and has not been bred since. I'm just too scared to risk her having another since she had complications while under. I've since had a Yorkie have one, and I'm giving her a year + rest and then trying it one more time. If she needs another section (which would make 2 sections) then she will be spayed. Her 1st litter was a free whelp, her 2nd litter was 2 pups, one pup natural and the 2nd pup was a c section. She was just to tired to get her out on her own. So depending on if it was a healthy c section or not, I'd try one time after the 1st c section. But thats just me. |

Thanks Breny and Mardelin. That's what the consensus was with the breeders. The vets had other opinions. |
I guess we as breeders have to do what's is the best for our girls....Now a vet may have an alterer motive....."C-Section/money". Don't get me wrong...I love my vet and he is not about money, but the love of taking care of animals. However, let's face it Vetinarians run a business. |

Not that my 2 cents is worth anything, but I'm glad to hear you all agree with giving the bitch a second try. The owner of a bitch that my Petey bred with was told by her vet to spay her because she had a c-section. I told her not to. I told her to wait a year and give it another try. I'm not sure I even agreed with the 1st c-section, but I'm not a vet. It was her 1st litter and after 1 hour of labor (not even hard labor) the vet had her come in and he performed a section. She did have a 5 oz baby and then 3 more 4oz babies, but she was a good size (weight 6+lbs) and decent bone structure. I would have given it a bit longer. This vet was all about the money, as he charged her a fortune and then had her bring them back in every 2 weeks for check ups??:( |

Where in Texas are you? That is an excellent price for a C section! I paid $700 something. It was after hours, but not at an ER vet, just the regular vet. |

i had to have c-sections on my last two litters. I also had the girls spayed because , one was to small to have been bred in the first place and I should never have listened to my vet when he said, go ahead. kandy was spayed the other day because i was only going to breed her one more time then retire her so one more litter just wasn't worth it to me to have her go thru it again. she always had been a free whelper with large litters but this time one was wedged sideways as tight as can be and the vet and myself both did everything before we chose to have a section to save the other four. My vet charged me $260. for both the section and the spay. |

Wow! That's a great price! |
See? I told ya! :p :eyetearss |
If it was the bitch's first litter, depending on the reasons for needing the section, I would breed again. If it was NOT her first litter and she'd previously been a free whelper OR if it was her second section, that would be the end of her whelping days. Just my opinion.:) |

:bravo: :tongue3: Now where's the "rub it in" button? ;) |
Thanks everyone for your input and expertise! It's very interesting to see how prices are so different in different areas. |
c-section quesiton My friend's Yorkie just had 2 pups wednesday morning. She had a very hard labour and we ending up taking her in for a c-section after 3 hours. The vet gave her a shot of Oxytocin and the first but was born naturally with help from the vet but after 2 more shots and no more labour, the c-section was done. The pups are very healthy but were just to big for Mom. While she was in labour though, she lost the feeling in her right leg. We thought is was originally because she was exhausted but it has been almost 48 hours and she still drags that foot behind her and has problems walking. We think she must have pinched a nerve during labour. I was wondering if anyone else has had this happen and if it healed on it's own. I hate having an animal put under for any reason and my friend is terrified of it. (She lost a cat that way) Mom will have a check up with the Vet on Sat but we are really hoping to avoid anymore surgery. Thanks for any help!:animal-pa |
