Help! Hello all I'm am new to all this. I have a yorkie/shihtzu and she looks exactly like a blond yorkie. Any way when I bought her a couple of months ago the lady i got her from said she might be pregnant and that if she is she would be due between the first and third week of September. and yes she is pregnant you can feel the puppes moving in her belly. But last night she threw up all night long, is this normal? |
Dogs can get sick through their pregnancy...could be that maybe the breeder had her due date wrong? Anyway, the bigger the pups get, the less room will be in her tummy. If she continues, take her to the vet. You don't want her to get dehydrated. |
She may be in labor. My girls sometimes throw up (not all night long)... right before they give birth. Hope all is well. :) |
She has just been laying around all day but that is usual for her. She follows me when I get up and then lays down when i sit down. I don't know anything about having puppies. I love this dog with all my heart and was hoping she wasn't going to be prgnant. My vet is out of the office until wendnesday. Is there any other signs to watch for? If what the lady said was true she should be between 60 and 63 days pregnant today. |
? Have you set up a place for her to have the pups? Do you have all the supplies on hand for the whelping? Debbie |
Yes I have everything that i have read about that I need. |
Sounds like your girl is ready Mine also threw up shortly before starting labor...is this her first litter? Is she having any contractions? Is she refusing to eat? Sorry for all the questions...maybe you have helped deliver pups before...I hadn't before my Tea' whelped six pups in June. Debbie |
This is her first litter and mine. She hasn't ate anything yet today but alot yesterday. I have felt alot of movement from the puppes today. I am totaly freaking out I don't know what to do and I have to leave for a few hours tommorrow. |
Has a vet checked her recently? Do you know approx. how many pups? It's a scarey thing if you don't know the size of her pups, and if her pelvis is big enough for these puppies (sounds like the woman was NOT doing you any favors putting your girl in this situation).. No way I would leave your girl alone...what if a puppy were to get stuck, you could lose not only your babies but your female as well! One of mine was born breech and the biggest pup (3rd of 6), if I hadn't been there to help her, I don't know what the outcome would have been. I know dogs have been having puppies for a gazillion years without our help, but I personally would not chance it. |
No she hasn't been seen by the vet recently I called a couple weeks ago when i started noticing she was pregnant and he said there was no need to bring her in unless she has complications, that sometimes it can stress them out to bring them in. She doesn't like other dogs at all so i have just kept her with me the last few weeks. |

The lady showed me the dog she was breed by and he was a yorkie and just about the same size as her a little fatter. I'm am not sure why you are jumping me, I take care of this dog as she is my child and if I really thought she needed to see a different vet I would take her in. She is acting fine. |
I'd get a second opinion, because this is yours and her first litter. It will probably make you feel better. |
I'm sure no one means to jump on you. It's a common practise with a first litter especially to have an xray done 7 - 10 days before due to see how many pups are expected and make sure that they are uniform in size so that you can be better prepared. I think the anger is more directed at the person who sold you a dog. I would never breed a mix but if it happened accidently I sure wouldn't pass the responsibility off to someone else. To sell you a dog and say, "oh it might be pregnant" just seems terribly thoughtless to me. She put you in a touch position and made her mistake your responsibility. I wouldn't consider her an ethical breeder at all. It sounds like you care about this little girl and have done some work to prepare for the whelping. I wish you and your gal luck and encourage you to get an xray. It's really nice to know when the pups are all out so you can take a deep breath. |
Aww sweetie.. I don't think anyone is upset with you. I know you are scared and they are just trying to give some good advice. She very well could be in labor already. Unless the vet checks her out and gives the thumbs up that she will be able to have them on her own, I would be very worried. I know you love her and I also know that you don't want to lose her. God forbid that one is too big for her to have and it is usually too late by the time an inexperienced owner realises that she can't do it on her own. I really would call the vet and INSIST that they see her to check her out. 60 to 63 days means she is due NOW. I wish you good luck and I hope she does okay. How old is she? I will be praying for you and her. Hugs Sonya |
The lady i bought her from said she is between 1 1/2 and 2, she told me that when i got her at the end of July. |
I really hope every thing turns out ok for her and .... You. The waitting is the hardest part! Please though, if you see she is having ANY Complications....Get her to a Vet Fast. Keep us up to Date on whats going on and ..... Ask everyone if you need answers from this Site. They have Wonderful people here!! Good Luck :) |

Please know that no one here is blaming you or trying to make you feel bad. The lady you got her from is to blame and should have never let this situation happen. You are trying to do what is best for her and I think everyone here recognizes that. They have been in your shoes many times and are just trying to make sure that you understand the seriousness of the situation--lack of hands on experience (although no fault of your own) can mean you won't recognize warning signs of problems that a seasoned breeder would pick up on. Just try to take in everything you are being told and know that it is being given to you with the best intentions. Welcome to YT and good luck with the whelp.:) |
Baby Crazy, I wanted to mention that I think for Yorkies it is 18 months or second heat that they shouldn't be bred before. Do you know if this was her second heat? |

You said she was 1 1/2 to 2 years old so this WOULD be her second heat. Is there any way you can arrange for someone to be there tomorrow when you have to leave? She really CANNOT be left alone right now. Especially if the father dog is "her size, maybe a little fatter". If he was smaller than her it would leave a little more room for comfort although not much. Her first litter should not be done on her own. Have you got an x-pen set up to help confine the mom with the babies. I have lived in Indiana before and I know how cold it can get even this time of year. I cannot stress enough how important it is to keep those babies warm from the minute they are born. And if you are not there with mom, most of the time the first time mom's have to be TAUGHT how to be a good mom. I know with Sunshine, she follows me everywhere and I had a hard time keeping her with her babies for a few days. After her milk came in she was much better. The point being that if she were to have the babies alone ( assuming she can whelp them alone) and you were gone for a few hours and she doesn't stay right with them, the babies might very well die before you get home. I am not trying to scare you but I think the breeders on here can tell you that nothing will kill a baby faster than getting chilled. So it is really impoortant to not leave her alone and to have her confined to a small area. How is she doing now? |
Well she is doing good today. I sleep on the floor all night with her beside her box. and yes I do have a heating pad in there, also have scissors incase i need them and goats milk, plenty of clean towels, a blue bulb sucker. I think thats all I need? Today I have that appt. at 1 and I found a sitter, she is a litlle more experianced as I am so maybe she will have more of an idea when she is due. I thought it was going to happens last night but it didn't. My vet will be back in tommorrow so I will deffinately take her in. Thank you all for the help. and I will keepeveryone posted. |
I could tell right from your first post that you were very caring and concerned about your mom to be... Another thing that I did have on hand was unwaxed dental floss for tying off of the umbilical cord if it kept bleeding... my little guy who came out breech (i always say assbackwards..lol) didn't have his cord chewed off so I had to cut it with dull sissors and since it was bleeding, tied it off with the dental floss. Worked great. All the others were just fine. Debbie |
I don't have any unwaxed dental floss. Would yarn or thread be ok, if not I can go get some unwaxed dental floss? Also if the mom doesn't chew the cord off were exactly do I cut it? I've seen pictures and the cords seem to be a couple of inches long. Could I cut it to short? or to long? |
I just had a thought, have you ever visited the website: http://www.debbiejensen.com/ They tell you so much about whelping puppies, extremely informative..and I looked at it many, many times before my Tea' had her pups. Debbie |
Hey thanks! that is a great site. |
Just to keep everyone posted. I canceled my apt. today and called a different vet and my baby has an appt. at 2:45 today. I will let everyone know how it goes. I am just so afraid I won't know if there are ditress signs. |
Well I just got back from the vets office and this one told me the same thing as the first one. So I don't know what to do, I guess I just ahve to wait until she is in hard labor before anyone will help me figure this out! I just wish I Knew what i was doing. I have read many hours of delivering puppies and talk to many people about what this "whelping details, but I am extremely nervious. Today at about noon I could have sworn I seen a mucus plug "it looked like snot" andthought the vet would give me more info of when and if she will be ok and I got nothing. He didn't tell me anything that I haven't already read about. |
Oh ya and also today at about 11:30 i took her temp. and it said 98.9 and when the vet took it at 3:00 it said 101.8. Could her temp. raise from being nervous? or am I just not doing it right? |
