My puppy having puppies?!? Hello! i have a female yorkie named Rubie and a male malteese pup. Lately Rubie has been acting strange and seems to be getting wider in the back...how do i know if shes pregnant? any advise would be very helpful:) |
Hello and welcome to YT. Ok, now to try to help you out a bit. How old is Rubie and the Maltese puppy? Were you aware that she had come into heat? If she had, the little male would not have left her alone if he's 6 months or older. I would be taking her to the Vet. real soon to see if she really is pg. and if she isn't too far along they can spay her. If she's pg and under a year old you could lose both mom and pups. It's very critical. |
Rubie is 10 (shock!) and the malteese is almost 9 mos old...we called the vet and the vet said that the only way she would know for sure if Rubie is pg. is if she x-rays her about 1 week before shes due. O so very confusing! i felt her stomach and i think i felt something moving but im not sure...her stomach hasnt gotten very big but her back is getting wide...help! |
Rubie is just too old to have puppies. Breeders who have dogs that have a few litters retire them at 5. Now you're going to let her have her first litter at ten? I'm sorry, but I and my vet and many other vets feel like any dog that is not going to be bred should be spayed. |
Ten sounds old to me to be having babies, but I'd check with another vet. |

Get her to the vet quick |
This whole thing was completely accidental! i checked with my vet and she said that 10 years is not too old to have pups and that Rubie will be fine is she does. I really hope she doesnt have puppies but if she does please keep your fingers crossed for me! |
10 years is way to old for her to be having puppies, it would be so hard on her body and you could lose her. Thats like a 70 year old women having a baby. Get her to the vets ASAP. |

wow:eek: !!! don't the female dogs go on menopause:confused: ??? |
According to AKC you can register a litter if the female is at least 8 months old and not over 12 years old. The male has to be at least 7 months old and not over 12 years old at the time of mating. Now I am not saying this would be the wise thing to do. Only that AKC seems to think its okay. If they are under or over the age stated it is still possible to get them registered but you have to have more proof that the mating took place. I think most reputable breeders retire their females at around 5 or 6 years old but according to AKC it would be okay if they bred them twice that long. Also if you think you are feeling puppies move, it may be too late to terminate the pregnancy without danger to the mom. Good luck to you and I pray all will be well with Rubie. Is she in good health? If she is pregnant, it would be a good idea to make some dietary changes now. There are a lot of knowledgeable breeders here who could make recommendations for what you should be feeding her to keep her healthy and to make sure she gets the proper nutrition during pregnancy and post whelping. :aimeeyork :animal-pa |
10 years old is very old for a bitch to have her first litter. If I were you I would consider getting her spayed and therefore ending the pregnancy. I just don't know that I'd want to take a chance with a beloved pet that I had shared 10 years of my life with. Bitches do not experience menopause and if in tack should always be kept from unneutered males that are 6 monthes and older. |
Did she have a heat cycle? Did your male try to mount her or act interested in breeding? What makes you think a breeding took place? |
