My puppy having puppies?!? Hello! i have a female yorkie named Rubie and a male malteese pup. Lately Rubie has been acting strange and seems to be getting wider in the back...how do i know if shes pregnant? any advise would be very helpful:) |
Hello and welcome to YT. Ok, now to try to help you out a bit. How old is Rubie and the Maltese puppy? Were you aware that she had come into heat? If she had, the little male would not have left her alone if he's 6 months or older. I would be taking her to the Vet. real soon to see if she really is pg. and if she isn't too far along they can spay her. If she's pg and under a year old you could lose both mom and pups. It's very critical. |
Rubie is 10 (shock!) and the malteese is almost 9 mos old...we called the vet and the vet said that the only way she would know for sure if Rubie is pg. is if she x-rays her about 1 week before shes due. O so very confusing! i felt her stomach and i think i felt something moving but im not sure...her stomach hasnt gotten very big but her back is getting wide...help! |
Rubie is just too old to have puppies. Breeders who have dogs that have a few litters retire them at 5. Now you're going to let her have her first litter at ten? I'm sorry, but I and my vet and many other vets feel like any dog that is not going to be bred should be spayed. |
Ten sounds old to me to be having babies, but I'd check with another vet. |

Get her to the vet quick |
This whole thing was completely accidental! i checked with my vet and she said that 10 years is not too old to have pups and that Rubie will be fine is she does. I really hope she doesnt have puppies but if she does please keep your fingers crossed for me! |
10 years is way to old for her to be having puppies, it would be so hard on her body and you could lose her. Thats like a 70 year old women having a baby. Get her to the vets ASAP. |

wow:eek: !!! don't the female dogs go on menopause:confused: ??? |
According to AKC you can register a litter if the female is at least 8 months old and not over 12 years old. The male has to be at least 7 months old and not over 12 years old at the time of mating. Now I am not saying this would be the wise thing to do. Only that AKC seems to think its okay. If they are under or over the age stated it is still possible to get them registered but you have to have more proof that the mating took place. I think most reputable breeders retire their females at around 5 or 6 years old but according to AKC it would be okay if they bred them twice that long. Also if you think you are feeling puppies move, it may be too late to terminate the pregnancy without danger to the mom. Good luck to you and I pray all will be well with Rubie. Is she in good health? If she is pregnant, it would be a good idea to make some dietary changes now. There are a lot of knowledgeable breeders here who could make recommendations for what you should be feeding her to keep her healthy and to make sure she gets the proper nutrition during pregnancy and post whelping. :aimeeyork :animal-pa |
10 years old is very old for a bitch to have her first litter. If I were you I would consider getting her spayed and therefore ending the pregnancy. I just don't know that I'd want to take a chance with a beloved pet that I had shared 10 years of my life with. Bitches do not experience menopause and if in tack should always be kept from unneutered males that are 6 monthes and older. |
Did she have a heat cycle? Did your male try to mount her or act interested in breeding? What makes you think a breeding took place? |

I'm not a experience breeder, I've just bred my Rubi (Rubie's namesake:) ) three times but I don't think it's possible to feel the puppies until she's put on a lot of weight and she's nearing labour. You say she's getting wider on her back, couldn't she just be getting a little fatter because she's perhaps overeating, not getting enough exercise or simply due to her age? Like almost everybody said I do believe ten is too old to have puppies, even more so if she's a first time mom. Please keep posting and let us know how everything is getting on. I wish you luck. 10 years and having first litter Yes Cottage cheese is a good thing to give. It will supplement the mother with calcium and help the babies too. Cottage cheese is a good form of bacteria. It will get rid of the bad bacteria in the system. The dogs that are pregnant need this. It's a form of acidophilus. I would offer her a vitamin supplement too, this will help with milk production She will need this at 10 years of age and having her first litter. Also because of her age she may have low calcium. This can cause her not to have her babies normally and to have a C-section. I have been educated as to the fact that a dog needs to have a litter before the age of 3 years to have it normally. Her pelvis may not give to be able to have them normally. It may be fixed, because of her age. I would be prepared to have a C-section. Do you know how to read a thermometer? I would start taking temp at 8 in the morning and 8 in the evening after the pups drop. This will be about 3 days before they are due. A good question is how do I know when the pups drop. You feel down the back every day. When you feel a Spine, this is when her babies drop and then she will be getting ready to have them. She will almost stop eating. Normal temp is 102 degrees. Watch for it to drop to 99 degrees then she will have the babies in the next 24 hours. I would advise you to go to the vet then. Let the vet oversee her with labor in case she needs help with a C-section.:aimeeyork |

This thread is from Aug, I think if her baby was pregnant she would of had them by now or be close to having them. |
Did she ever come back on with news of how the delivery went? |

Saw your post and talked to my vet.... Hi, I'm new to Yorkietalk and not very experienced yet,but I do know that I'd never breed a dog at 10(accidents do happen, I understand that) Good luck, you could get her spayed if she is pregnant, you'd lose the puppies too,it would be like an abortion for dogs, which can only be done for dogs who are early on in the pregnancy.
