Yeah it does take some searching.
When I called my breeder to inquire about Jasmine I asked her to tell me about the dogs. She said Jasmine's mom was the sweetest girl in her kennel and a really healthy, easy producing (free-whelping) bitch. So even though she was a pound over the AKC 7 lbs limit she still used her in the breeding program becuase 1-Her health and vitality were perfect 2-She was a sweetheart who loves everyone 3-she produces many pups easily and healthily 4-Her proportions were near-perfect.
To counteract the size issue she always breeds her to the same stud - her smallest and most energetic of the two she has. She said she used him once with Jazzy's mom when he was owned by someone else and the liter turned out SO nice she traded two puppies for the stud becuase the match makes such good puppies. :-)
Now - maybe it's just me but when I hear a breeder with such clear cut ideas about what she wants to produce, WHY she is breeding a certain dog to another dog, and with a greater emphasis on TEMPERMENT and HEALTH over "size" I feel much more confident about buying a puppy from them.
