Need Help! I just had a baby born with his intestine's out. Can it be fixed? Will he make it? He's only 2.2 oz |
I would call an emergency vet right away! I've never personally delt with this type of thing with my litters, but I would call them right away. I am not sure if they can save the baby, but they may want you to bring mom in to make sure everything else is ok. Let us know what happens and I will pray for this little baby and his litter mates to make it through! |
Thank you so much. I have a call in to my vet. I've never had this happen before either. He's active. I just need for them to call me back to see what I need to do. |
you must be scared to death! Is mom whelping the rest of her litter still? |
She just had #6. They're all fine. |
I'm sorry to hear that. I'd get her to the vet asap. They can do a surgery if they deem it necessary. Congratulations on the big healthy litter. |
I live in a small town and there is no emergency vet close. My vet never returned my call. That's not like him. Anyway, the little boy is doing fine. He's very active and sucked milk for me. I have him all wrapped up, keeping him warm, and he's in my bed with me. All the other babies are doing good. Thanks for everything. |
Oh that's good, he sounds well taken care of ;). I don't believe they l can live like that hon. Vets will decide if the surgury is worth doing or do otherwise. I just want you to be prepared. I'll be praying for you guys. Susan |
Thanks. I figured it would depend on how bad it is. I just want to make him comfortable for now. |
I'm sure you're right. I've never dealt with this sort of case before, but you learn alot just sitting and watching here at Breeder Talk. |
Not too long ago there was a person whose yorkie had a puppy the same way. The puppy would nurse and was doing good. But he only lived a few days. And their vet said the puppy could not live that way, it was just a matter of time. I will try finding the thread for you. |
Found it!! The vet did say they could do surgery but it was very costly with a very low survival rate. Here is the link, go to page 3. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sho...ght=intestines |
oh no - I just read that link :( :( :( and I wanted to say how sorry I am Char for the little baby - that has to be very hard to see - Good luck with your brand new puppies |
It's called an Omphalocele. I know that babies can be born with this also. They need surgery ASAp to survive. I think the intestines need to be kept moist so they do not die |
For a "large" omphalocele (most of the abdominal organs, including intestine, liver, and spleen are present outside the abdominal cavity), the repair is done in "stages" and may include the following: Initially, sterile, protective sheeting is placed over the abdominal organs. Because the abdomen may be small and underdeveloped, it may not be able to hold all of the organs at once. Therefore, the exposed organs are gradually moved back into the abdomen over several days or weeks. The abdominal wall is closed surgically once the organs have been returned to the abdominal cavity. |
so how is the baby doing now ???? |
I'm sorry! I completely left this out, but I wanted to let you know that I am praying for your baby and and you!! |
We are thinking of you and that little baby. |
poor little thing. i am so very sorry. |
I can't think of a thing that would make you feel better... and I am so sorry for that. There just isn't anything anyone can say at a time like this that will make the pain and fear go away. I am thinking of you and hoping that something can be done to save this precious puppy. My thoughts are with you and your puppy and I will continue to check back for updates. |
Thanks Everyone! I posted a new thread titled "I Can't Believe This!!" on the little boy's progress. All of the intestines have gone back in his belly all by themselves!! He's doing fine and I'm supplementing him. I don't know what's to come yet. Now just to see what the vet has to say. My vet is on vacation so I have to use another vet. |
Hoping that maybe the vet can do something. How sad and scary that must be. My thoughts are with you and the little guy. :( |

how could they do that? didn't he have an opening where they came out? I have seen only one other case of it happening to a puppy and the pictures she posted were just awful. hope your little guy will be alright. |

So they went back inside before you saw the vet? Did he put a stitch or so in? Did he say what specifically they were (mom disemboweled puppy when chewing a cord, or intestines just born on the outside). We send our prayers to guys. Sorry for the questions, as a breeder I worry sometimes about moms disemboweling a puppy when chewing a cord so I curious about that. |
Checking in on little Miracle Puppy - how is he doing ?? Please have an UNeventful night - I bet you aren't going to get much sleep and all the best to that baby |
In children it's called Gastroskisis. My granddaugher Robin was born that way. She is one of them I am raising. She is 11 years old now and fine. I never even thot about it happening to animals. I'm surprised that the mom didn't grab him and try to eat him. I am so glad that you and he are doing so well. If you can at least get some antibiotics in him that might help. I have a product called Albon and it is sometimes used as a general antibiotic. Maybe you know some other breeders in your area that you maybe able to contact in person and they may know something that would save his little life. Praying for you and the baby cause I know how fast you can get attached to one who needs help constantly. Sylvia |
Any update on this little fella? |
Thank you everyone for the kind words, thoughts, and prayers. My little guy passed away last night :( He\'s in a better place now. I\'ll post pictures of the other 5 in YT Nursery. |
