Please help.... ): 3 Attachment(s) It was suggested that I ask over here... so I am. I need a breeders opinion. My puppy;s mother looks like she could be redleg. She has a shorter coat, and the breeder says it takes forever to grow. Now, my puppy (havent' brought him home yet) but have pics.. he has a short coat as well. Some over on the general side think he looks mixed, but I really trust my breeder and she only has the 2 dogs that are the parents. There wouldn't have been a chance for an accident IYKWIM>.. Well, she has a yellow lab, buthe is crippled and he is outside. Her yorkies are strictly inside dogs becasue she lives in a heavily wooded area. She does not work, she is a stay at home mom and she only breeds her dogs 1x a year. She isn't out looking for a buck, and I don't think she is trying to screw me. I truly believe my yorkie is pure, I just am looking for an explination as to why he is still shorthaired. He is getting a little fuzzy on his body, but not his head. I am not looking for a showdog, but I want a yorkie becasue that is what I am paying for! I don't mind if he has a shorter coat, i would keep it that way anyhow...Texas is always hot. Any opinions are welcome, thanks so much for your time! On the upclose pic, he is looking down his face isn't really that long. |
i am not the most experienced breeder on the board by a long shot and i don't mean to hurt your feelings but that doesn't even look like a yorkie to me. looks almost like a dacshound. that isn't spelled right but you know what I mean. i guess that is the picture you said his face is not really that long tho. does she have his ears shaved/ Might be a yorkie but i would be doubtful as my puppiess look a lot different at that age. |
puppy I remember a very informative thread by Kim King..she said a red leg does NOT produce a red leg puppy..she had a red leg and has researched this subject. All her pups were heavy coated. The decision is up to you. You mentioned the price of $800 being very fair for your area for a purebreed...if I was in doubt, I would buy another puppy from another breeder. |
I agree. Looks more like a dachshund than a yorkie. How old is the pup again? Maybe I missed that in the original post. Do you have pics of the parents? |

Well, the pics make him look longer than he is. His legs are very close to the same size as the length of his body. I read that they should be a box, so I measured him. I don't have pictures of the parents but I have seen them. The father is 3.5 lbs and he is silver with a darker color grey around his nose, he has a very silky coat and a short little snout. The mother is a bit taller and is 6.5lbs, she has a bit of a coarser shorter coat, less hair on her snout and a longer snout as well. When I picked the puppy the breeder told me that he was going to have a lot of his mothers traits including the longer snout. she pointed out that the others were more like the teddy bear look, but I just took a liking to my little guy. The breeder has promised that she would DNA test the pup if I needed, and that there was no way any accident could have happened because her dogs are absolutely never around any other dogs. I told her that if I didnt' see changes I would take her up on that. I love this specific baby, so i am going to really try and wait to see how things turn out. BTW- he is 6 weeks old and he weighs 21oz. |
Hi your puppy is very cute, but he does not look like full yorkie to me either, and i have to ask what is red leg? he looks to maybe have a liitle dashound i him, I have 4 babies and none of them had that short hair, seeing his parents would really help:) |
1 Attachment(s) I saw your picture on your other thread and I wasn't going to say anything, but now I will . If this is a pure bred yorkie it is not a good one. But that does not mean it doesn't need love too, it is up to you what are you willing to settle for? Do you want it to look like a real yorkie when it is grown ? Or does it matter to you if it does. It sounds like you are already in love and love can be blind...I will post a picture of a pure bred yorkie at 6 weeks and you take a good look, if you are going to be happy with this puppy, I am sure you both will be very happy. This woman is breeding for the money and not in any way to improve the breed. But in closing the puppy is very cute, just does not at all look like a yorkie, sorry Attachment 134751 |
It seems like you have already formed a bond with him. He's very cute indeed. If I were buying him, I'd ask for pictures from previous litters (or emails so I'd know what to expect as he grows. At this stage, he doesn't look like the average yorkie we breed for. But as you said, you would just like a yorkie. I believe in your other post you stated his parents were AKC. If you love this puppy and trust this breeder and this puppy is worth $800 to you, by all means get it. But if I bred a yorkie and it looked this (no offense intended), I sure wouldn't charge $800. |
2 Attachment(s) I have a redleg and yes they rarely throw redlegs. They can throw a pup that has a harder coat but not the color. I'll send a pic of my redleg and a pup from her last litter that had what looks like it may be a hard coat. |
1 Attachment(s) Here's a pic of a redleg that belongs to a colleage of mine. I hope this helps. |
That is what the mother looks like. A few ppl have pm'd me and i have seen some pics of yorkies that loko just like the baby in your pic... who started out looking just like mine. I believe the mom probably is a redleg, and this is just the one baby that came out that way. It has to be somewhat possible that they may have a redleg baby. I also read on a breeders website that her redleg bitch had a whole litter of redleg puppies her 1st round. So, it has to be possible. I had the option to pick one of the teddybear faces... that isn't what I want. I like the look of this one I just don't want him to grow up into a completely NON yorkie... because then my husband will not be happy. I have decided I am just going to watch his progress, he is awfully young and then when it' s time to get him August 18th... I will decide. Thank You for all of your replies. I didn't take offense to any of them. If I thought he looked standard I wouldn't have asked the question. However, even if he doesn't look just like every other yorkie puppy... doesn't mean he isn't perfect. Because he is, and I love him no matter what. If he doesn't turn out like I think is acceptable I am still going to try and take him if the breeder will accept a lower price. Wish me luck. |
Good luck in whatever you decide the main thing is that the puppy gets a loving home. |
puppy I was of the opinion a red leg can and does produce red legs in their litters, but was told I was wrong..that was my reasoning for not using them in a breeding program... he looks like a great pet..I would not pay $800, but that does not mean he is not worth it to you..just a matter of opinion...I am sure many would never pay what I have paid for some Yorks... |
Too Cute Good luck he is too cute. I also commend you on your decision to go ahead and get him even if he is not what you expected him to be. As you said you have bonded with him and love the little guy and as one of the other YT'ers said he needs someone to love him and you obviously do. j:) |
