5 day old pup has pneumonia and gasping for air! HELP PLEASE!!
 
I apologize if I am in the wrong section to post this, please forgive...but I need some advise or help PLEASE from a breeder that's been thru this. This is my girls first litter. She had one boy and one girl. I just got back from the vets office with the little girl because she was struggling to breathe. He said she had some pneumonia and gave her amoxicillin. She's laying there with her mouth open and she looks like she is gasping for air. I can't get her to nurse right now...he said that would be the BEST thing for her (to nurse) to get her strength up. PLEASE, somebody...any suggestions on what I can do to help the little thing? My heart is breaking..........Thanks so very much & again I apologize if I'm in the wrong section, but I was hoping someone had been thru this and knew what to do. Thanks again & God bless.

MG Why would your vet send her home?
He just wants you to give meds???? I hope someone can help.

I don't know why he sent her home...he just said there's not alot he can do...he just said the next 24-48 will tell if she's going to make it. But, he said if she doesn't nurse then the prognosis is probably not good. Oh my...I can't take this!! :(

Oh Man I think I would Find a new Vet! Sounds like he wants you to just leave it up to nature??????:confused:

Do you have a vaporizer??? Ask your vet if they think a vaporizer will help the little one breathe better.

I know its used to help older puppies, but im not sure about such small ones.

Give her a bit of puppy nutrical to hold her and feed her esbilac with an eye dropper. If you don't have any nutrical on hand try a glucose solution. Mix one teaspoon white corn syrup into four tablespoons boiled water, add a few grains of salt. Put the solution into a dropper bottle and give 5 or 6 drops of the solution for each 100 grams of body weight. Just a tiny bit at a time making sure that she is swallowing it correctly. Make sure that you don't forget to diaper her (stimulate her to go potty) and keep her warm. Once you get some nutrical and formula in her see if she has the strength to eat. If not try again in an hour or two. When she can't breath she will stretch out her neck and open her mouth. Help her out by suctioning anything that may be in her nose or mouth and hold her with her head slightly angled down. My little Mercedes had this problem soon after birth and made it through, went home with her new mommy yesterday. Your little angel can make it to if you help her through it. Good luck and we'll be praying for you.

Tammy I worry about administering food by mouth....can cause the puppy to aspirate and get fluid into lungs.....I've done the glucose, but intravenously just to prevent dehydration. NutriCal is great. Have you tried NutriDrops...it absorbs via the gums much faster into the system.

My guess is that she would have had the congestion at birth and it got infected, that would make it bacterial pneumonia.

That's why I suggested one drop at a time to watch and make sure that it is swallowing correctly. I haven't tryed nutridrops because I haven't located them around here but I'd like to.

I have pulled thru a few with pnemonia that the vet gave no hope for , they are right about not letting her dehydrate and the Nutrical to keep her strenght up, I also would hold them firmly in my hand upside down and lightly rub towards the head every hour or so and aspirate any fluid that came up. Im so sorry to hear this, I also would rub a little nutrical on her gums, and every so easy pat her lungs to help her out a bit. I will keep your baby in my prayers.

I have heard about using a vaporizer and lightly thmping their chest, to loosen it up. I agree with Mary, sub qing would be best. In your case, I'd see a different vet, maybe they'd provide more help.

I have a landseer newfoundland bitch, i have kept her alive for around 4 hours now, she is restless wont feed and is really struggling to breath, i have read this forum as ive decided i cannot let her go i have to do my best to save her life, its 5am and i cant get any corn syrup or anything to try your methods to help her, i have seen on another forum that a sugar water solution with a drop of salt will help for infection and strength, is this right, i really dont want to lose her and altho i know i wont get a reply from you tonight ive decided to try it as i dont want to lose her and if i dont try something im going to, please help me :(

Sorry, I can't offer any help other than the previous replies in this thread. Since it's already 5 A.M. where you are, I hope you are able to get into the vet's first thing. Are you talking about a newborn pup? I wouldn't worry about getting her to eat for a few hours until the vet can see her. You wouldn't want her to aspirate. Just try keeping her warm and draft-free and patting her back to help break loose the congestion until you can get her to a vet.

Hi thanks for your reply, i did keep her warm an did my best, kept her hydrated as much as possible and kept patting her etc, unfortunately shes gone now :'(, i did my best and just wish nature wasnt so harsh , thanks again for your reply,

I'm so very sorry to hear she didn't make it. Rest In Peace, Little One.

There's so little we can do for the very young ones. It's heartbreaking to not be able to help them. Know that you did your best....no one can do more. Are there other pups? How are they doing? Hope all is well with them.

There is 2 litters 1 litter of 9 is doing fine and are all ok and the other has 12 but isnt looking too good, the litters wernt planned our dogs were taken to my uncles as he has kennels and his newfoundland dog got out and got both of the bitches, when i lost the little 1 within 15 minutes after that i lost another 2 and have another 2 that are going down hill, i have put mum in charge of the puppies now as iv decided i cant take this, so im going to get out the house for a week or so, thanks so much for your replies etc, the kindest of regards to you, take care

You need to leave these pups with a vet, not your mother.

You can't let your dog 'accidentally' get pregnant and then leave for a week when things aren't going so good. These pups are YOUR responsibility and it's your responsibility to keep them ALIVE.

Hopefully, you have figured out you are not cut out for breeding and will have your females spayed.

I am sorry you lost the pups.
