Dna I am going to get Diggy DNA through AKC. At what age can I start this and I heard is it 3 times a year, so do you wait 4 months in between? |
A stud is required to be DNA'd if he has more than 2 litters a year or more than 7 in a lifetime. It is only done once and I would assume can be done at any age. He is than issued a DNA number with AKC which will show up on his puppy's pedigrees. |
If you are going to do DNA - it is good for that dog for a lifetime. DNA does not change in ones life. You contact AKC fot the DNA kit. Inside the envelope when you get it contains the directions and the swab. Follow the directions carefully so you can get a clear, true sample and not have to redo it. You send the sample back to AKC and they will do the DNA and send you back his certificate/number. Your vet can also help you do the swab. I had mine help do the first one, just to make sure I did it right. But will cost you his office visit. If you are not going to breed him and there is no question on his parentage - you do not need to get it done, unless you just want to have it. T. |
Okay I must have read it wrong I thought it said 3 times a year, and something about 7 in a lifetime. So what age can I do this? Any other pointers? I have Diggy looked at by a VERY experianced breeder with show dogs. He said His ears are pushing the bigger side but is his body goes anymore they will be fine as his ears probably will not grow anymore. He also said he thought Diggy is a Splitter and carries the piebald gene. I am trying to track his pedigree down and see if I can trace it back. Is there anything else I need to do?? Additonal tests? I did Bile Acid, should I test for hips and knees? |

It is not necessary to a DNA on a female unless parentage is questioned.... |
Females can be DNA'ed too if breeders want. If they are imports (with Export Pedigrees) - they must be DNA'ed if you want to register a litter now with AKC. But you do not have to DNA females if not imports. Quote:
Aditional tests? Yes check legs, knees, hips, heart, and eyes. I also get a full blood panel too besides the Bile Acid done on the ones I would breed. It just gives you more information. As you know it does not guarantee that their pups will have any problems, but does inform you more to make a better educated decision. T. T. |
4 Attachment(s) Oh I did do the Blood panel. I have that record also. I bred Rottie's and had both parents OFA certified but I did not know if it was important to have a Yorkie OFA also...I will definately do that test then. He has a vet visit tomorrow, I was tring to compile a list of things I would like the vet, and tests to run before I think any further of breeding him. I am not interested in breeding for show or anything like that. I have did research on the piebald gene with help from other YT Parti and Biewer breeders/owners and I realize there is mulitple theories as to where the pie bald comes from. I am following what AKC says and not breeders ont his one as they have the final say so on where this gene comes from and what is standard. he has white on his chin, chest and and glazed on his front legs. Here are a few pics of him. The third pic are his sisters (same parents) the one on the right is Bella my baby, the one on the left is my sisters Ada. Both had white as babies also but completely disappeared when adult coat came in...same may happen with Diggy as he maures. He is only 5 months right now so we will see. Both Bella and Ada are spayed. I chose to spay Bella as she is just over 4 pounds but VERY petite and I feel too tiny to breed. Just my choice and I felt the best one for her. The owner that wants to breed with Diggy is also in the process of researching what tests she needs and how to go about it. I hear a lot of "leave it up to the experianced people to do the breeding" Everyone started somewhere right? I am not interested in breeding females...I just want the stud. But IF I do it, I want to do it right. I do need to learn about what the female should be tested on also and what to look for on her Pedigree and make sure her owners have did the right things also as I am looking for the best possible standards and life for these babies. Liek I said i only would breed for pet quality right now but I feel it is just as important as show quality when it comes to health. So any other suggestions?? |
You said you are interested in only breeding for pet quality and not show...there should be no difference. We should all be breeding for the best. AKC does not have the final say of the standard the "National Mother Club" does. Lots of contreversy over the piebald gene and I don't want an agrguement started in the middle of your thread. So, we won't go there. |
Sorry did not know there was controversy on Pie Bald. I am not trying to argue at all I am just going by what I was told and learn as I go as everyone else does. I am so sorry If I offended you as I am just trying to learn. Everytime I talk about breeding seems like some kind of controversy gets started or brought up and I seriously did not know it all exsisted. My Diggy is only 21 weeks, and I am starting to research now before I ever take the final step to actually breed him. I thought this is how you are supposed to do it. Also I alwas hear people saying refer to AKC for this refer to AKC for that so and go by AKC standards...So I thought they had the final say so. If I did something wrong or said something wrong please tell me I promise I dont know enough about this argue about anything!! If you dont want to bring it up in the middle of the thread please PM me and tell me where your thoughts I wanna learn!! Paula~ |
I didnt mean I am not breeding for show persay...I guess I do not know anything about showing dogs and meant I wouldn't be interested in a show dog "for show" for myself, i want a healthy pet. as far as them being show quality ...oh yes I would love to have one of the babies be a show dog I just thought the first concern was health and thats what I am most interested in...I guess I worded that wrong. Sorry |

AKC does have the standards. But, they are established by the mother clubs that really have control over when there are additions and/or changes, |
Okay I got ya....I though maybe it was directed else where and I see the big picture now!! ;) I had never heard the pie bald quite explained as the link posted says but like I said I am NO expert just a newbie trying to do the right thing and NOT step on toes. :D Okay so now I understand Mother Clubs and AKC. Next question, at the risk of starting an arguement...lol....Doesnt AKC now recognize the Biewer tri color Yorkie? Just not the Parti yet? Its m understanding that Biewer was started in Germany and is very highly sought after. But Parti's are not yet, but still highly sought after?? Oka if this is gonna cause arguement feel free to PM me I do not wanna be a bad person here or further cause controversy. |
4 Attachment(s) Ohhhh and here are more pics of my lil Diggster Boy and why the breeder felt he may be a splitter. What do ya think?? I think he is just stinkin cute....and I pray healthy. So far just had hypo issue but its gone now. I thinks it is very exciting to learn new things even if Diggy isn't breeding material I still would like to be educated on it. Im 36, so I have the rest of my life to give breeding a try. No rushing and getting in over my head. |

Hope that explains it a little more clearly. |
