Tail docking, how short? I have heard "leave 1/3 of the tail", "cut 1/4 inch into the black" and others. How do you all determine where to dock the tail??? I am taking my puppies in tomorrow afternoon to have them done and want to be sure the vet doesn't get them too short. Thanks! |

1/4 inch into the black, right where the tail begins to narrow. |
1 Attachment(s) The show breeder I got my one girl from cut hers 1/4" into the black. Her tail stands up great and the hair flows off of it very nicely when it is long. I love it that way. My other yorkies tails were cut too short. This is her and you can see her tail. Hope this helps. |
my breeder advised me to look underneath the tail. where the color changes is where you need to dock. she said it is practically marked for you. if i am wrong, please someone let me know. |

If you do it where the color changes, you're cutting too short. Every tail is a bit different in length. If you do it where the tail begins to narrow....you'll dock at the right length for each dog. |

Do you have to lift the tail up before you clamp? Or does it matter? I have heard that this leaves more skin and stuff on the underside so that they aren't restricted from raising their tails as they are supposed to. Please let me know. I want to make sure it is done right. |
I just pull the tail straight out. I too, cut 1/4 into the black and it's been perfect every time. |
1/4 into the black here too. i think I might do the 1/8 next time. the tails on two that I kept look a little long to me. |

Also, when is the right time to dock mine were born today and vet wants to dock friday morning. Is that too young? because she said Monday would be to late. |
