Do y'all dock the tails yourself? How about dew claws? |
I don't, I have my vet do the tails and dew claws as he also checks the pups and new mother at that time. |
I dock 1/4 inch into the black looking for where the tail starts to get narrower. Each tail is different so if you just dock at the same place on each puppy some tails will be shorter then others, so you have to look at where it narrows. I do my own tails and dew claws it seems easier on the puppies then having to travel at such an early age. I do them myself because I prefer not to have my puppies around any other possibly sick animals that young. |
Docking Myself Years Ago I Had A Breeder Show Me How To Dock Tails, She Used Curved Scissors And Cut A V Then Twisted The Tail And A Vain Came Out Diped The Tail In Blood Stop, No Clamp Or Tie. No Problems That I Remembered, And She Just Sniped The Dewclaws Used Blood Stop. Has Any One Done A Docking Like This? Also Is There A Site For Help In Docking Yourself. Breeding My Baby In Dec. Its Been 20 Years Since That Docking> |
I have no clue but this is an interesting thread!! Dawn |
tails I also dock 1/4 inch past the tan , into the black. I do my own tails and dews. I dont like to expose new puppies and mom to lots of stress and possible disease at the vet office. Every vet that did tails before I got the courage to do it myself either had lots of blood loss or the tails got infected. The way I do tails, there is no blood loss and no stitches. |

You can purchase a book by Terri Schumski. How to buy and raise a healthy dog....shows and talks about tail docking |
I am glad to see this thread today as I will be taking Lexie's pups in to have their's done in about an hour. My question is...is it stressful for Lexie to stay home without her puppies while they have this done or should I take her with me? |

Since mine are usually done at home, I put the dam outside to run, so that she doesn't get anxious if hears pups squeel (and at time they do at times), but she's close enough to put her back with pups as soon as the procedure is completed. Nursing does comfort them. |
I take my puppies and mom to the vet to have tails and dew claws done. That way vet can go over puppies and momma. I haven't found the courage to do it myself yet LOL. Not sure I'll ever have the courage to dock tails LOL Donna |

tails I said the same thing for years, until a breeder showed me the clamp method..I am all for no blood or stitches...so easy, fast and clean...but I do understand. I did not start on my own pups..a breeder friend had a litter and I did them..they were Min Pins, they were from her new champion and hopefully, show potentials and she still let me do it!!!!!..then I did a litter of Boxers, then my own..LOL |
