Accidents do happen.....you can tell by the end of her fifth week of her 1st breeding. If you stand her on her hind legs, her back, against your front you will see a slight swelling between her hind legs, lower abdomen....I don't recommend palpitateing her....too dangerous.

Do not have her x-rayed until a week from her 58 day. You can cause fetal damage if done earlier than this.

I like to get xrays around 58 days. That way you can see the babies better and check for size.

wow, from what everyone is saying and I am doing this... I almost possitive she is Pg. .. Okay, so I will set an appt. for day 58 for her to get an xray.

Now, why in the world would my vet tell me to get xrays when she is around 5 to 6 weeks... wow, i am glad I mentioned that on here. I have been reading the sites that are giving on here that tell you about whelping and all that you need and trying to get prepared.

Now she may go into labor anywhere from the 58th - the 63rd day. So, waiting until 58th day you may be too late.....five days from her 1st due date will give you a good x-ray.

If your vet is breeder friendly, you may want to ask him to set you up a whelping kit with some instructions.

1. Premeasured Pop shots
2. small surgical scissors
3. surgical gloves
4. floss for tieing off the umbilical cord
5. hemostats for clamping
6. septic sticks
7. iodine
8. bleed stop.
9. tube for tube feeding....ask the vet for instructions
10. Nutri Drops works better than nutri cal absorbs directly into the gums.
11. Meticated Shampoo to bathe your mom on her first due date.

These are just a few things....and yes, as you said, read and prepare, prepare, prepare.

What about the CALSORB that I have read some on here say they use. I ordered it. Is it safe to use if she seems to be having trouble with contractions?

Calsorb isn't really necessary, unless you have a large litter.....possible eclampsia. You can increase calcium naturally, cottage cheese, a little grated cheese, whelping pudding, etch. However, eclampsia can happen with small litters too. Don't calcium supplement prior to whelping....her body will shut down and won't produce it on her own.

Dopram is another thing to have...It helps in reviving a puppy.

scale to monitor weight gain
thermometer for keeping track of the room temperature too.
also a thermometer for taking temps of mom and pups. Pups should be taken 3 times a day the first week and room temperature should be lowered by a degree daily.

A tablet for you to write down things about the pregnacy and whelping of each pup...and growth patterns.

Remember you are going to be running around like a keystone cop on your first litter.....so, be kind to yourself.

And say goodbye to sleep for a little while. These babies are alot of fun but they are tons of work as well. Happy whelping!!

thanks everyone for all your help... I am making a list and taking in.... I just pray it turns out to be a very smooth whelping. When it gets closer and time for whelping I may ask if someone could give me a number so that I can call them.. and of course I have in emergency my vet. He tells me I can call in any concern even at his house.
