The 5 day cluster coming up in August may very well kill me but I'll die happy!!! Taking off work for a week will be interesting. I'm pretty sure that Laurie is doing that one, I think we'll be room mates, that will be a ball. Are you coming to Roanoke Robbie? Are you showing Levi now or do you have another that your working on? One thing I can say about showing, I learn something new every day. Connor is hiding this morning, I guess he's ready for a break.

I hate those 5 day clusters....by the end of the 5th day, when it's time to drive home, I'm so tired I can't see straight and heaven forbid show time is a late one on the last day. With puppies I only enter them 3 out of the 5 days. Just not to over tire them.

If only this were a perfect world and the judges were judging the dogs! I have family that show some very nice dogs and switched to the UKC because they were unable to beat the handlers (except under a few judges) that often had inferior dogs in the ring!

Yes, this is somewhat true and it is said that handlers can finish a dead cat. However, if you consitently take a good representation of the breed into the ring, judges begin to recognize that. As a newbie, I was fortunate to find a great breeder to obtain my first show dogs from and finished 3 dogs in less than a year, going against some top handlers and in Texas, one of the toughest regions to finish a dog.

It is very political in the show world and can be pretty disheartening to a beginner.

I did tell them to stick with it and have since read that it takes about 5 years before a beginner usually sees results, but they have really enjoyed the UKC and have no plans to return to the AKC. You never know though, they might change their minds.

Hopefully they change their mind. As I said I finished 3 dogs in less than a year and that was in my first year of showing and handling my own dogs as well as my mentors.

UKC is alot of fun, I finished Connor there. It's a great place to learn and get your confidence built. An AKC title still earns more respect so I really want that for Connor as I believe he is worthy of it. I did watch a well known (really well known) handler take a dog in the ring yesterday and take winner's dog. I was standing with a handler who had the same mentor and I asked her if I saw a high back end on the dog. She replied yes he is high in the rear but some people just have more clout. I guess that sums it up.

I agree! The more you are seen by the judges the more they get to know you. I was out for about 25 years and just returned last year. So it was like starting over again, and I had moved to another state so really was coming back fresh. It was really hard, but I did not give up. I have one pointed now and hope to have her finished later this fall.

Hey, weren't the Florida shows this past weekend (Orlando and Tampa the weekend of 16th)? I wished I could have gone, but had meetings I had to attend. Anyone have any news?

This is true in alot of cases. However, I've found that there are judges out there that just don't know the yorkie standard and put up some unknowns with poor quality dogs too. So, once again I'll say you win some you lose some. You gotta take the good with the bad, the show world is not for the faint hearted, just keep focused on what you want to do and go in with the best and keep on truckin.

I know what show you were at and what handler it was. PM me and tell me if it was one in the same.

Yes I'm going to Roanoke. Hmmm, Laurie and I had already made a reservation for our room and will have the kids with us. I didn't know you were coming but am looking forward to seeing you and Connor again! No, I'm not showing L. You'll just have to wait and see my new babie(s)
