New mama's won't eat, what can I do? One mama had babies on the 17th the other had babies on the 20th. They are separated and I am watching their food. Niether of them are eating enough. They are barely eating anything. The food sits in the dishes and is not disturbed. I don't even notice much water gone. We had to move suddenly but it didn't seem to upset the mama's too much. The babies didn't come early they are on time. The first mama is up and running around, she's showing no distress. The 2nd mama is a little too early to tell yet, she delivered 7 babies. Some suggestions PLEEEEASE???? Sylvia |
Have you tried boiled chicken and rice or browned beef (plain) and rice? you can also mix some jar baby food with their normal food. |
My Roxie just had a litter of 7 on the 10th. They may need to be coaxed a bit and spoiled the first week. I put egg in her kibble for breakfast, cottage cheese goes in it for lunch and hamburger and rice for dinner. She receives a vitamin at bedtime and nurtracal if she looks tired around the eyes. Kibble and fresh water needs to be available to them at all times. I've even resorted to hand feeding boiled chicken to get them going. It's imperitive that you take care of mom so that she can take good care of her pups. Don't be afraid to spoil her the first week, she deserves it. Congrats on your litters. |
Mardelin has a post whelping pudding, maybe you could ask her about it for your mamas...? |

Not boiled but my husband buys fried for a puppy that won't eat anything else. I have not tried the rice but we buy the chicken baby food for the one who won't eat anything else and I tried to give the mamas the leftovers. They would only take a taste and not eat anymore. Do dogs REALLY like rice or is it something that they just eat? |

I have chicken down, canned liver, pieces of hotdogs, puppy kibble soaked in puppy formula, dry food and water. All sitting beside the refridgerator. They still turn their noses up at it all. I will try boiling the chicken and rice. Do you put ANY seasoning in the boiled chicken? |

Earlier this morning I was going to try to tube feed her babies just to make sure they are getting enough but they didn't need it and mama drank the milk. At least she's getting tiny bits of nutrients. The other mama just lays with her babies unless she has to go potty and then she just goes close enough to use the paper and back to the babies. |
