Help first time stud advice!!!! Hi guys, I am going to stud my baby out this weekend for the first time and am looking for any suggestions that you may have to make this a smooth experience. I welcome any and all of experiences that you've had or have heard of that make it successful on our side as well as the mommies side becuase this is going to be a first time mommy as well and me and the dams owner are kindof learning together, so please help yorkietalkers!:animal-pa |
Okay, are you ready? Are you ready for all the responsibility that you have placed on yourself and your future baby's daddy? Have you all had each one tested for Liver Shunts, STD's, and how are their petellas and other organs (heart, eyes, teeth, etc..) ? Because these future babies will carry the genes that each parent has. I know you would not want a pup to struggle and then not make it, or have to have an expensive operation just to live a good life. I know... this all sounds weird. But facts are facts. Both you and the owner of the bitch are 100% responsible for bringing into this world this litter you will produce. Okay! (It just sounded like from your post both of you do not have a clue, but plan to breed your two yorkies together)! If you have done all the above testing and these two are great specimans of the yorkie standard and you know since you have had others checked them out (judges, yorkie breeders/exhibitors, you know... people that know the standard). And do you know the sire's and dam's pedigrees very well and will make great matches? If you have no clue - don't do it!! If you have had everything checked out as a reputable breeder would have done...Well, do you have a good contract??? Always have everything in writing. You may have some problems breeding anyways - since it is their first time each. T. |
I see from your profile that you are working on your "Breeding Business." So I am sure you know what to do and have done all the required tests. T. |

Do your homework on responsible breeding is the best advice I can offer. And have a written agreement between you and the female's owner. Leave nothing out, think of everything and add it to the contract. There is another person on YT that had a verbal.....guess what the owner of the female decided she wants to keep the only female in the litter; the agreement was to give the stud owner pic of the litter. |
Mardelin - You can word it so much better than I can. T. |

just a few other things to add....what if the bitch doesn't get preg?? .... do you know what to do when they tie? how to hold them? see it is hard for us to give advise if you don't tell us how much you know. i have studded much long than breeding. for me, studding a dog is much harder than breeding and a lot of responsibility. like what was said above. these puppies are your resp as well. hopefully you are studding a bitch from a responsible breeder....if not, you will need to be there to help with the whelping... ok i am going to stop. you tell us what you know and maybe we can add something. but the most important thing is the TESTING....IS YOUR STUD TO THE STANDARD? AND IS THE BITCH TO THE STANDARD? PLEASE BE A RESPONSIBLE BREEDER. THERE ARE TOO MANY YORKIES OUT THERE THAT ARE BRED JUST TO BE BRED AND COME IN ALL DIFFERENT SIZED AND LOOKS. DO THE RIGHT THING |
1 Attachment(s) Happy Healthy Mum and Dad make happy, healthy puppies - breed standard is what some require, but in my book, happy and healthy is the most important ingredient as every type and size of Yorkie has it's place.....even the non-show standard puppies for pets. :) Read up as much as you can, and ask others for help and advice, and you'll be fine. My bitch and dog have just bred for the first time, and all went fine......He didn't like being watched, as he was shy, but I watched discreetly so I could be there for any tie, or problem, and it was fine. ;) Make sure you and your friend have a market for the pups, and make sure and check up that they go to good homes only.....be ready to keep any that you can't home. ;) :animal-pa Debra x x x x picture of my three babies, Tara, Casper(dad), Tammy(mum-to-be):D |
Ok. I should have stated I have researched researched researched, tested tested tested. My dog and the dam that are breeding I truley believe are going to better the breed and possibly even produce show pups as well as perfect pets for anyone, both are such sweetie pies~:) . Now I just want to know if there are any tips or advice that anyone can give me. I wouldnt be studding my baby if I hadn't have done the research, testing etc. I know I have seen plenty of people breeding dogs that shouldn't be, but everyone has got to start somewhere and tips from fellow yorkie yakers I believe will help me my first time through. Ps the dam's owner has done alot of research as well and we are working together to go through the motions of our first time. PSS~ I am going to be there for the whelping (especially if the other owner needs help), I can't miss my baby becoming a daddy! |

You didn't mention that you've done all the research. Thanks for clarifying. One more thing to remember, if anything goes wrong with this litter, health issues......99% of the time the stud is blamed. |

ok...so what you are saying is you and the other lady have never studded or whelped a litter? WOW....that is taking on alot. there is so much to say but no one can write everything. so what research?? you are still leaving it opened... let us know what questions you might have. by doing the research, you should know alot. what questions are in your head? also.....i would never never take a pick of a litter. what if they only have one which is commom with yorkies? i would always get a stud fee. |

Thanks for saying you like my babies. Yes, I might well just keep them all too.....I think she only has one bigger and one small in there anyway, so that wouldn't be hard ! I will be very fond of any she produces, and I intend to keep at least one ;) |
breeding Best Wishes..you remind me of a friend... She decided to breed, she used one of my males. Got a nice litter of 3...her mother lived with her and when time came to place the pups both couldn't bare the thought of them going..so they kept all three. They had promised friends a chance to get a puppy, so they decided to breed the bitch at her next heat...again, a nice litter of 3...again, they could not part with them at the last moment..so in one year they went from 1 Yorkie to 7, but the they were very happy...and I might add, they had the bitch spayed. |
I am laughing ! I will probably do the same, ha ha ha ;) |
I am horrible when it comes to those little faces. I have been good so far, I only have one but am constantly looking. I actually want to adopt a older one that may have had a rough start and try to make their life a happy one comparitively to the way it got started. It always breaks my heart to pieces when I read some of the stories and I want to do what I can to give them a forever home that they would be just spoiled rotten in~ Back to the studding issue. I should have clarified that I just want to hear stories of how people who stud have gone about it. I knwo what all the text books say and what the internet says and what different articles in breed specific magazines say, also what my grandfather does when he does it with his Saint Bernards (which are completely different by the way haha) I just wanted to know if there were any tricks or techniques that worked for different people. I felt a little attacked for just asking for a little knowledge. Just becuase I am 23 (tomorrow actually) doesnt mean I am irresponsible....fill me with knowledge but please dont attack me, thats a little unfair. But please let me hear your stories, I love reading about the different situations that may or may not happen so that I can better prepare myself, thank you all. Trust me regardless of age I know we are all very protective of these little guys...I had a really hard time even leaving my dog with his groomer so I understand your concerns~ |
4 Attachment(s) Well look at these three ! Tara, I bought as a pup. Casper I bought at 19 months and gave him a forever home full of love, and.... Tammy I bought at 3years after a terrible life - I think she was in a shed all her life, she was pungenlty stinking, and had terrible untreated mite infested skin with a yeast infection on top of that. She wasn't toilet trained, and was all timid, had never seen a TV, or a carpet, etc. She had been shaved, with red raw skin on top, and black skin underneath. Her ears were in tatters after she had to fight other dogs for food - the hair is coming in well now, and covers them mostly, though you can still see one ear is kinked as there is nothing left ! She spent weeks nibbling her skin. She had never been to a vet, as told to me by her owner. Yet this is a dog with a top pedigree full of Ozmillion Champions ! She was 3lbs when I brought her home, and her normal weight is 4lbs....we spent hundreds at the vet, and got her into tip top condition before Christmas - she is a different dog, and soooo greatful ! I would always do a rescue if I could ! :D 1. Tara, Casper, Tammy 2. Tara 3. Casper - Look at this wee mannie - who could resist ! 4. Tammy - 6 months later - I bought her last Oct....look at her now ! |

What you've shared with us about the condition you found these babies from Champion Lines only reinforces why a breeder must take care in placing their dogs..... |

WOW... THEY ARE BEAUTIFUL |
2 Attachment(s) Thanks ! Just shows you a rescue is as good as a puppy ! Tara is the only one I have had since she was a puppy, and everyone comments on her, but now I have two more - Casper was lovely with long hair, but he kept peeing on his curtains, and it stank, and he hated getting washed all the time, lol. Now as well as Tara the Queen, we have Tammy the little princess, and her coat is coming in well now - can't wait to see it at it's full length !:D Tara(left) Casper with long hair Tammy with half grown coat ;) I must look out some pics of what she was like when we first rescued her - you will be shocked - not the same dog ! |
I actually have been trying to adopt a little one from a rescue but they are so difficult. I dont know why I get rejected becuase I am very regular at the vet and I have the space for the little one but I think it is becuase I have both a dog and three cats and not all rescues are compatible with both. I dont know but I will continue to try and offer until a little one that needs a forever home is placed with me. Your babies are beautiful!!!! And you are sooooooo lucky~ |
1 Attachment(s) I found both of mine in ads - one on the internet(Casper) after days of trawling through ads, and the other(Tammy) in the Nothern edition of our main advertser paper. Just phone ads and ask lots of questions. I travelled 200 miles for one, and 300 for the other. There is no harm in going for a look, and I have ALWAYS come home with them, lol Too many people go to rescue centres and there are not enough Yorkies to go around, but you WILL get one from an advertiser or the internet. Just don't hand over any money until you have see them ! :D You could phone up the all Yorkie Rescue Centres or also phone breeders as they often have an older dog needing rehomed;) Good Luck ! :animal-pa Debra x x x |
