Help Breeding With An Lp?
 
Just had a question my friends yorkie who i was going to breed Peeka with(still not sure about) Has a lp grade 1-2 in her left knee i called and asked my vet what he thought and he said she could still grow out of it or it could tighten up. It doesn't seem to bother her at all. But my question is can she breed her and will she be ok like her puppies? I don't really know anything about it and i don't know what to tell her. She wants to breed her but not just with Peeka. I really don't think i will breed Peeka with her but her breeding friend says that a 1-2 is acceptable to breed so i am asking you experts what you think. I have also heard that show people say it's ok to breed with a 1-2 is this true? Please any advice would be great i just feel bad for her she is really upset this dog came from a really nice pedigree all show dogs so i really wonder what is going on.

I am not a breeder, but it is my understanding that LP is considered a genetic defect. Not life-threatening as liver shunt is, but a defect anyway. Once identified, pups with it should not be bred, nor should the parents be bred again once a pup of their offspring is identified with LP.

You are going to be hard pressed to find a line of Yorkies with perfect knees..this is still minor..wait until breeding time and if it's not worse it is acceptable. Breed to a LP free male.

I know nothing about breeding but my girl has LP. I just couldn't imagine putting her through that. I can imagine the extra weight would hurt her knees. I don't know JMO.

so would her offspring have LP as well. she called the breeder she got her from and they said neither of the parents have LP and she was the only pup in the litter.

Aww thanks i am doing better. I know i feel bad for her i just don't have any answers for her as i haven't ever experianced it. She does have a friend that breeds but i trust you guys so i would rather ask here. If i decieded to breed Peeka to her(still not sure) i don't want to be unethical ya know.

Well I say And I am not the expert at all Just get all the test done one both Dogs to make sure all is good. and Peeka is a sweet heart.

Seems unfair to the mom, pups & potential owners to me. :confused:

I would think it was more on the genetic side if it was in both knees.
If the dog does alot of jumping off things, it could have caused injury to the knee.
Have your friend to keep her from jumping and see if the knee will tighten up.
Have it checked again... closer to breeding time.

It's more in the left knee. Thats what her vet told her to, just to keep her from jumping around a lot

That's why i am asking here i want to give her the best info i can so she can make a good decision. It's not my choice what she does but i would like to inform her with as much info as i can.

If it is a 1..that can be from jumping alot...if both parents have sound knees and she is bred to a sound male, the percent is very low..but vets say surgery is not needed until 3 or 4..and if they are limping and having problems.
