Help ! New Breeder need information ? HI, I am new to this forum and I am very glad to be part of it ! I look forward to talking to as many Yorkie people as possible.I need some info and hope that you guys can help me out. I am use to working with Horses, My babies are a whole new thing, even thou they think they are as big as horses sometimes. :) I love my babies with all my heart. I have a 1 year old Male Yorkie names Mai-Tai and a 8 month old Female named Suki. I am going to breed them after she has her first heat, But She has not gone into heat that I am aware of. I have noticed that she is clinging to me more than she usually does. Does this mean anything ? She also will nto let Mai-Tai get any attention from me now. could someone give me some pointers on breeding them. She is very possessive of me right now. Your comments and help would be greatly appreciated ! Thanks ! Bonnie |
Did you mean you're waiting for her to come into Season so that you can breed her? If so, she's probably too young, should wait until her 2nd Season. Average age for 1st Season is 8-10 months. 1 week coming in (sweeling, 1 week showing color (you might have to press a white tissue to her right after she goes to the bathroom) Yorkies don't bleed heavily, then 1 week going out (when she is fertile and ready to be bred). |
I meant swelling |
Thank you so much for your information. Yes I am waiting for her to go into heat. I dont want them to breed the first time, like you said. I am trying to wait till she is at least 1 year old. I didnt know that the Yorkie does not bleed that much. Thank you for your suggestion. I will check her tonight. I thought maybe she was going into heat because for some reason she is becoming more possessive of me then she was before. I appreciate your help. I have another question if you could help me. She has her new teeth coming in and the baby teeth are still there, They seem to be pushing them out a little . I have been giving her big bones and even the roast bone from dinner to chew on. Do you think this will help her ? Is it unusual for this ? Again I thank you for your reply. By the way your Yorkie is Gorgeous ! |
Yorkies are known to retain their baby teeth, sometimes double rowing them. Good time and age to have them removed is when the permanent canines, I pretty much watch the bite and if I see it going off, I'll take them in and have the vet check them. As far as breeding her it is usually best to wait until 18 months or 2nd Season. You need to watch her maturity development. Yes, their personality changes a bit when they're in Season, they get real loving and kind of silly......somewhat losing their brain cells. |
Thanks for the compliment on my Charmer/"Ch. This Time I'm Here Let's Party. I just love him. |
In regards to losing her brain cells, That must be why she runs in circles until she gets the male so dizzy watching he leaves the room LOL. I greatly appreciate the help you are giving me, I was lost there for a while. As far as her maturity , she seems to be more mature than the male and he is 1 year old. She picks up all her toys in the living room and puts them in her basket, when I tell her it's bed time. Real smart girl. I will have some pics up soon of them. Have you been breeding long ? You sound so knowledgable and I am so greatly for that knowledge thank you. I will keep an eye on her teeth. They seem to be pushing out like they are going to come out. Again I thank you so much for your help. Bonnie |
No, I haven't been breeding long, I have a wonderful mentor. Didn't breed my 1st litter until I finished 3 Champions and learned everything I could before getting near a whelping box. There is a wonderful series of books by Terri Schumsky ( now deseased). You may still be able to get them through Revivalanimal.com How To Buy and RAise A Good Healthy Dog and another one is on Whelping a Litter. She also has tapes on grooming and whelping. |
Oops! You can get it through Amazon.com |
Thank you SSSSOOOO MMMMUUUUCCCCHHHH. This will help me out alot. I cant believe that you have not been breeding long. Your mentor must be perfect at what he/she does with the dogs. She has taught you so well, But it does take two and I think that you have picked it up PERFECT ! You seem the perfect puppy mom. I hope that you dont mind me asking you questions ? I find your information and knowledge so very helpful to me. I want to make sure that I raise and breed my dogs the right way. It's incredible that you have had so many championships. But by the looks of your precious puppy I can see how. I will try to find those books tonight and again I thank you from the bottom of my heart. Can I still ask you questions why one comes up? Which I am sure will be probably by tomorrow ! LOL Thank you again. |

Absolutely, you can ask questions anytime. You might want to check a web site out. Breeding Better Dogs by Dr. Carmen Battaglia......he has seminars and classes on breeding. He's also an AKC board member, judge, Vet. I'll try and remember to look up his website, since he has wonderful reading material about breeding on there. |
Thank you again for the information. I did have a question (surprise ) when do you need to dock the tails and remove dewclaws. The lady I bought my little girl from said she does it herself the day that they are born. Is there a certain time to make sure it is done? I'm glad that you dont mind my questions. There really isnt anyone in my area to talk to. Even thou the lady that I got my little girl has champion in her bloodline. She told me that she is out of the breeding business that she just dont have time. So it is very reassuring that I can talk to someone like you with the (right) knowledge to help me out. I thank you again. Yes if you run across his web-site I would love to know so that I can purchase some books, videos,etc... |
Do you have pictures of your Yorkies ? |

I onyl Have pictures, no way to scan (broke it ) so I dont have any to post yet ,But I am going to take their Christmas Pictures Friday and put them on a disk so I will post them this week-end. Thank you for the information about the dewclaws and the tails. Do you think it would be o.k. to go ahead and dock the tails myself or should I take them to a vet ? About how mcuh do you think they should weigh before their tails are docked and claws done ? Also I know that you are showing and have such perfect yorkies, Are your Yorkies blue & gold or Black and gold. I have a female black and gold and a male Blue and gold ? Does it really matter what color they are ? |

mardelin How do you remove the dew claw and dock the tail ? I dont think that I will try it my first time, But it is always good to know. Also someone told me that the last 2 weeks of the Yorkie's pregnancy that she needs to be watched 24/7 unless she is sleeping. Is that true ? Should I keep her away from the male when she is pregnant ? they are very close, But they also play very hard, She runs so fast and long that she makes me dizzy. She is the agressive player of the 2 and always wants to play and play and play.... does this change when she is pregnant. how careful do you have to be. She has a habit of jumping, I mean she could jump straight up almost to my head and I am 5'7. I know that they are very active dogs but WOW. Does letting her play the same as she does now when she is pregnant make a difference ? |

Yes, you need to keep watch on her very diligently in the last couple of weeks, especially the last one . I hinder their activity in the last trimester. You're little girl is still not a year and a puppy.....she'll slow down, this is what I meant about maturing out before breeding..... I keep my girls separated from my boys until I'm sure they are with whelp. Then they're allowed outside to play together, but watched very carefully. |
As always thank you very much for the advice and information. Sounds like I need to take her to the vet and learn how. Your right she is a very active puppy. May be I should keep her and the boy separate a few hours a day to slow them down. Is it o.k. to separate them for a long period of time. I only have 2 right now (never know about 1 year from now ) will it make them lonely, Or do you think they will like having their own space for a while. At night they both have their own rooms to sleep in , or no-one would sleep. |

I have 3 different videos now. You may want to purchase one too. they have LOTS of information. And I agree :) Mardelin, you are very helpful ! |
Breny : thank you veyr much for your information. I will make sure that I get a few of the video's this weekend. How long have you been breeding your babies ? |
Not long, this is only my 2nd litter and I too have a mentor and know a few people. Also the breeder I bought my boy from is very helpful to me as well. My vet answers alot of my questions too. We are due in a few days ! |

Terri was a wonderful lady and a champion for yorkies and at the fore front of helping people that had Liver Shunt babies. It's a shame that without out her, her foundation has now disolved. Her Vassar Square Yorkies were beautiful, along with her artistic talents.....she is and will always be missed. |
Mardelin , Have another question if that's o.k. My female Yorkie is the baby to a male that has alot of champion in his bloodline. The breeder told me that she shows him also. But I have a question. My male has the perky ears straight up very cute, but my female ended up with the ears like her dad which lay down. I read that they call it relaxed ears or something like that and there are Yorkie's out there like that. Is the yorkie's ears suppose to be docked ??? I never heard of docking the yorkies ears. I was out shopping this weekend and ran into a lady that had a pair of yorkies both had the laid back ears.... Now I am confused even more. I tried to download pictures of my babies on my profile but I am having problems with it. so I cant show you what I'm talking about. Can you possibly clear this up for me??????????? |
I hope you take advice and learn all you can and need to know BEFORE you even think about breeding! |

No Problem. I searched for about 8 months looking at different breeders, their papers on the mom & dad and after about 14 breeders I finally found my gorgeous Male it took me another 6 months to find my perfect little female. She is the one that has championship all thru her bloodline. Breeding is not something that I take lightly. I am even MORE strick in who my puppies are going to. I have made an application that WILL be filled out before I even think of having them take my puppy/ Also I will be doing a background check on the person wanting my puppy to make sure that they are worthy of owning a yorkie. So yes I appreciate your concern but as you can see I will research plenty before they will breed, Besides Suki will not be ready till next year sometime if then. this will give me plenty of time to research breeding my babies, Besides Suki's mom and dad are close enough to help out if needed. |
Mardelin/ As always thank you for your help. I will try this with suki, she is still a puppy and maybe this will help. I knew that I could count on you for information. I am glad that you are here to help. As my previous post showed. I do take this breeding serious. and with help from breeders like you I know that I will get the right information to help me. Again as always I thank you so much mardelin for your help. I cant wait till down the line I can tell someone that asks me questions that I thought of you as my mentor. Again thank you ! |
