Help ! New Breeder need information ? HI, I am new to this forum and I am very glad to be part of it ! I look forward to talking to as many Yorkie people as possible.I need some info and hope that you guys can help me out. I am use to working with Horses, My babies are a whole new thing, even thou they think they are as big as horses sometimes. :) I love my babies with all my heart. I have a 1 year old Male Yorkie names Mai-Tai and a 8 month old Female named Suki. I am going to breed them after she has her first heat, But She has not gone into heat that I am aware of. I have noticed that she is clinging to me more than she usually does. Does this mean anything ? She also will nto let Mai-Tai get any attention from me now. could someone give me some pointers on breeding them. She is very possessive of me right now. Your comments and help would be greatly appreciated ! Thanks ! Bonnie |
Did you mean you're waiting for her to come into Season so that you can breed her? If so, she's probably too young, should wait until her 2nd Season. Average age for 1st Season is 8-10 months. 1 week coming in (sweeling, 1 week showing color (you might have to press a white tissue to her right after she goes to the bathroom) Yorkies don't bleed heavily, then 1 week going out (when she is fertile and ready to be bred). |
I meant swelling |
Thank you so much for your information. Yes I am waiting for her to go into heat. I dont want them to breed the first time, like you said. I am trying to wait till she is at least 1 year old. I didnt know that the Yorkie does not bleed that much. Thank you for your suggestion. I will check her tonight. I thought maybe she was going into heat because for some reason she is becoming more possessive of me then she was before. I appreciate your help. I have another question if you could help me. She has her new teeth coming in and the baby teeth are still there, They seem to be pushing them out a little . I have been giving her big bones and even the roast bone from dinner to chew on. Do you think this will help her ? Is it unusual for this ? Again I thank you for your reply. By the way your Yorkie is Gorgeous ! |
Yorkies are known to retain their baby teeth, sometimes double rowing them. Good time and age to have them removed is when the permanent canines, I pretty much watch the bite and if I see it going off, I'll take them in and have the vet check them. As far as breeding her it is usually best to wait until 18 months or 2nd Season. You need to watch her maturity development. Yes, their personality changes a bit when they're in Season, they get real loving and kind of silly......somewhat losing their brain cells. |
Thanks for the compliment on my Charmer/"Ch. This Time I'm Here Let's Party. I just love him. |
In regards to losing her brain cells, That must be why she runs in circles until she gets the male so dizzy watching he leaves the room LOL. I greatly appreciate the help you are giving me, I was lost there for a while. As far as her maturity , she seems to be more mature than the male and he is 1 year old. She picks up all her toys in the living room and puts them in her basket, when I tell her it's bed time. Real smart girl. I will have some pics up soon of them. Have you been breeding long ? You sound so knowledgable and I am so greatly for that knowledge thank you. I will keep an eye on her teeth. They seem to be pushing out like they are going to come out. Again I thank you so much for your help. Bonnie |
No, I haven't been breeding long, I have a wonderful mentor. Didn't breed my 1st litter until I finished 3 Champions and learned everything I could before getting near a whelping box. There is a wonderful series of books by Terri Schumsky ( now deseased). You may still be able to get them through Revivalanimal.com How To Buy and RAise A Good Healthy Dog and another one is on Whelping a Litter. She also has tapes on grooming and whelping. |
Oops! You can get it through Amazon.com |
Thank you SSSSOOOO MMMMUUUUCCCCHHHH. This will help me out alot. I cant believe that you have not been breeding long. Your mentor must be perfect at what he/she does with the dogs. She has taught you so well, But it does take two and I think that you have picked it up PERFECT ! You seem the perfect puppy mom. I hope that you dont mind me asking you questions ? I find your information and knowledge so very helpful to me. I want to make sure that I raise and breed my dogs the right way. It's incredible that you have had so many championships. But by the looks of your precious puppy I can see how. I will try to find those books tonight and again I thank you from the bottom of my heart. Can I still ask you questions why one comes up? Which I am sure will be probably by tomorrow ! LOL Thank you again. |

Absolutely, you can ask questions anytime. You might want to check a web site out. Breeding Better Dogs by Dr. Carmen Battaglia......he has seminars and classes on breeding. He's also an AKC board member, judge, Vet. I'll try and remember to look up his website, since he has wonderful reading material about breeding on there. |
Thank you again for the information. I did have a question (surprise ) when do you need to dock the tails and remove dewclaws. The lady I bought my little girl from said she does it herself the day that they are born. Is there a certain time to make sure it is done? I'm glad that you dont mind my questions. There really isnt anyone in my area to talk to. Even thou the lady that I got my little girl has champion in her bloodline. She told me that she is out of the breeding business that she just dont have time. So it is very reassuring that I can talk to someone like you with the (right) knowledge to help me out. I thank you again. Yes if you run across his web-site I would love to know so that I can purchase some books, videos,etc... |
Do you have pictures of your Yorkies ? |
