6 oz almost 4 wk old I have a puppy who will be 4 weeks old in two days. He weighs 6 ozs. He is active, acts average for his age right now. But he has me worried because of his size. I started supplementing with the justborn puppy milk a few times a day 2 days ago., and he eats canned food already along with mamas milk. He doesnt act like anything is wrong. I was hoping he would show some weight gain with the supplement right away but he hasnt. Ill try stepping it up a knotch with increased milk.. When a puppy is this small this young, I associate it with problems, because this has been my experience. Anyone ever have a puppy just be this small by nature and do well? Or do you have any other suggestions other then supplementing what I am? |
I have never had one that small at that age! Mine only mature to be about 4 pounds, but they hit 6 ounces by at least 2 weeks if not before. Is he really tiny or really thin? Definitely wouldn't be selling that one and would get a blood profile and urine bile acid test at 8 weeks. Have you ever had puppies with liver shunts from the parents? |
ceeby weighed just 9 ounces at eight weeks. it took me several months to get him straightened out. it was just one thing after another. Any bug that came along, he didn't have the strength to fight it off. My vet recommended against doing any kind of testing that required fasting until he put some weight on. he is just a tad over four pounds noww and was a year old in July. |
Liver shunt, no not to my knowledge. I have had two failure to thrive puppies who just never did well and died at 10 weeks. Both very small. I had an autospy done of ones liver and heart and they found nothing. His death went unexplained. He died at the Er vet when they infused him with fluid, his glucose was 38 by the time I got him there. He had nutra drops karo syrup, and I couldnt get him to come out of it. And he was never as small as this puppy at this age. The other puppy born at another time, died before I could get her to the vet, and at that time, I didnt get testing as I should because I was really green and new. So Im not sure if she had liver shunt or not. COuld have been. Well this puppy is small, not really skinny, but not as plump as his litter mates. ANd size wise there is a big difference in length too. He is doing okay, no signs of sickness right now, but he is just way to small. |
1 Attachment(s) I just gave him some supplement so I took a picture. |

Awww Kelly what an adorable baby, I can't imagine one that small! your doing a wonderful job with him. |
Yep sure have!! Hi, I got Littlebit when she was 8 weeks old and she weighed 8oz. She will be 3 years old in February and I have never had to take her to the vet for anything other than her vaccines. She is a whopping 2.5lbs. Although she thinks she is 100lbs, like most all Yorkies do. She is amazing! You can check her out on My Yorkie. I just posted 4 pics of her today. She has the faintest little bark. We laugh when she barks because we call it a "wanna be bark". Anyway if he is eating good and acting good then keep him until he is over a pound, which may be 5 months old. Thats how old Little bit was when she hit 1 pound. We had a celebration!! When he does and you want to sell him---PM me!!! |
That's the good thing about this new urine bile acid test - no fasting required. Here's an article on it: http://www.dvmnews.com/dvm/article/a....jsp?id=134764 You might also look into this product, it's an immune booster and liver support and would probably be very beneficial to this little one. http://www.nativeremedies.com/petali...-diagnose.html |
8 weeks 8-9 oz babies!! ...... just lil tadpoles;) Its good to hear both are now fine. Laceys mom , thanks for the article, and Im up for trying a natural remedy......the link would not work for me is it called petalive? It wouldnt let me access it for some reason. I want to try it!!! As long as he is doing fair I wont take him to the vet for a long time for testing as u all said. The lil guy I mentioned who had the really low blood sugar but was sluggish, was still walking around and conscious before I took him to the ER vet. Obviously I was very worried or I wouldnt have took him in but I feel they did to much to fast and thru him into shock. He died in less then an hour. I know they were trying to help him but..... I think he was just to fragile for all the prodding and poking. If he does well, passes the exams at a later date I will release him one day! Im at my yorkie keeping quota:p Thanks he is very cute! Ill keep ya posted. Another challenging puppy journey ahead. BTW HAPPY THANKSGIVING TURKEY DAY EVERYONE!!. |
I had one little one like yours in a litter of 2 . Its a little female . She is now 5 years old and weight 1 pounds 10 ounces . The little male weight 2 pounds 4 ounces . Believe it or not , they never had health problems . 2 of my friends are the owners and I can see the little ones on a regular base . |
I don't know what to tell you about his size but, he is absolutely adorable!!! I would be a nervous wreck if I had a pup that small. Sadie is 5 1/2 lbs and I worry someone will step on her! When I got Lillie she was only 1.6 lbs...I thought that was really small...I can't even imagine 6 oz!! I think I would have to keep him LOL!! Good Luck and I hope he does fine! |

I weighed this am before supplementing, and he gained an ounce. :) Even with being out of town yesterday for thanksgiving. SO he only was supplemented twice. I might be a worry wart. I am going to give him 1/4 cc of lixotinic every day or two, to try to give him a boost. I looked back on my notes and I guess I have had a puppy this little. 6 ozs at 4 weeks, but it was Joker my cleft palate boy and he depended completely on me for food and he was always underweight and sickly for many weeks. Now he is 2 1/2 lbs at 6 1/2 months happy and healthy. BUt I dont think he would have been this small if it wasnt for his cleft. Thanks for the stories and input! We will just have to wait and see. |
The perfect place Kelly, While reading this thread......I was just so impressed.....you are so dedicated and concerned......and such a wonderful person......I know sometimes it is hard to raise little babies....but, you must have been given a gift......and that gift went to the perfect place.......YOU. It is so nice to see the warmth that you exude..... Best wishes with all that your doing..... Shirley |
My goodness, thank you Saleswman!! Ill be walking around on air all day.:p :kiss3: That was really nice. I do love what I do even though it can be exhausting. I love animals. BTW........Ill get that $50.00 out to you ASAP.:bleh: ;) Seriously though, you made my day. |
