Personally I would never give pick of the litter unless the contract stated that a litter is more than one live healthy pup. I feel it very unfair for the owner of the female to have to give up the only puppy when all the risk was on the female. Then they have to wait a year before breeding again, where the stud can be out making money every omnth. That is just my opinion, I have never studded one out, nor have I had to use a stud. I just know I would not give up my only puppy when my female is the one that had all the risk and expense. I believe I would insist on two or more live puppies, (all the breeding books that I have read say one pup is not consiodered a litter) and a restud for one or none. But at the very most, I would split the price of a single pup. |
I totally agree with you but some do not, they will charge half price for a singleton. We have studded our little man out 2 times and ended up with all girls in those litters.(he cant seem to do that for me). The price of pups here is about 800-1000 so a hefty stud price,we bred the two females for 300 I felt that price of a pup was outrageuos (for a stud fee),might as well as buy your own male for that price and not have to have her bred somewhere else. |
Depends on the stud and if you're selling the puppies you are making money off the stud. Just another way to look at it. |
I am shocked.... that someone would use their stud, and expect "pick" puppy back, when only one puppy was born. So where is the benefit to the bitch? Her owner endures the pregnancy and all that goes with that.....only to NOT have a puppy..?????? I was born at night.....but it was NOT last nite..... I would find another stud, with a more compatable contract if that is the case. I guess that is why I leave the breeding up to you guys....LOL :confused: |

I usually don't stud out, but am fixing to do it. Our contract isn't black and white (although it is typed in black and white). The provisions as to the price in a nut shell are something like this: The fee not only includes the stud service, but my advice and knowledge throughout the mating, pregnancy and being on hand for the delivery, and puppy care. The fee is $800.00 (which is close to the price of pick of the litter); however, there are provisions for adjustments down from that price like: there has to be at least 3 puppies, only two and the price goes down to $500.00; only one and the price goes down to $300.00. If a C-section is performed, the price goes down to $500.00 for 3 puppies and $300.00 for 2 or less. Puppies that die before selling or have any health problems that prevent selling are not counted. I think it is fair since I've been on both sides. |

When Shakira was bred , I paid $500.00 She had only one puppy . The stud's owner sent me a registered letter telling me , the next stud service for her will be free . |
Lacy's Mom - Is your stud a champion and being Specialed? That seems a bit high if not an AKC champion. Just thought you should know - since you might not know. Contracts are the only way to go, but yours seem a little complicated, but very well thought out and looks like you are just trying to help the owner of the dam if not many pups are born or incounters a C-section. His father and grandfathers on both sides are champions. He is not - I don't show or have a desire to. I don't advertise to stud. This person approached me, but has no experience so I will have to be very involved throughout. I don't see it as complicated, complications in my opinions arise when things happen that have not been discussed. There's actually another provision no pregnancy, no fee. The purpose of the "complicated" contract is if the owner of the female is going to make a profit, then I will share in that profit, but if only 1 or 2 pups are born, expense of a C-section incurred then the owner won't be out a lot of money. |
I had such a hard time finding a stud here in Nogales AZ all the vets here had no Yorkies so I could only find one! He is AKC and they asked me as a fee for a female puppy and they said they had to pick the one they liked better :thumbdown I thought it wasnt fair but since I had no choice because I had not found another Yorkie owner I had to accept! Now that I read all that will come when the whelping starts and the puppy care and everything that may come unexpectedly I feel that it is definitely not fair!! :( |
I am going back to my breeder when Annika is ready and he charges $500 or pick of the litter and can decide once the puppies are born. Of course I never went into details on the what if? I will keep this thread in mind when the time comes. |
I have a couple people interested in Brodie, I will charge $450. After using a stud who got pick of my litter, I know what its like to have someone come in and take whatever baby they want. I\'d rather charge the fee and be done with it. |
