Why Do You Breed?
 

I would like to pose the question to everyone on this list who breeds, be it one time, several times, as a hobby, or for show. I don't intend this to start a flame war. This is for informational and hopefully educational purposes only.

1. Why did you choose to breed the bitch?
2. How did you choose the male you bred her to? Looks, size, pedigree, etc?
3. What registry is your bitch, and sire registered with?
4. What is your intentions in breeding? As in: 1. Show prospects 2. Pet puppies 3. supplemental income 4. For the heck of it, etc. etc.
5. What characteristics of both male and female did you hope to produce with your litter?
And lastly 6. How many puppies were produced and what sexes, what registries were those pups registered with?

Hopefully this will be a good and informative thread. I hope no one will feel afraid to participate.

1. Why did you choose to breed the bitch? She has wonderful looks, hair, pedigree, health, size and I would show her but she just doesn't have the look at me quality

2. How did you choose the male you bred her to? Looks, size, pedigree, etc?
He is our male, his pedigree will go great with our female, great looks and last size.

3. What registry is your bitch, and sire registered with? Both AKC

4. What is your intentions in breeding? As in: 1. Show prospects 2. Pet puppies 3. supplemental income 4. For the heck of it, etc. etc. I would adore show prospects and will expect some, but puppies will more than not go to pet homes as people here are really not interested in showing.

5. What characteristics of both male and female did you hope to produce with your litter?
Let's see!
Male: Attitude!! Great face!
Female: Hair, looks, size..longer legged than the sire and I would love that!

And lastly 6. How many puppies were produced and what sexes, what registries were those pups registered with?
We have no puppies YET - our female is only 1 year 1 month!

Hopefully this will be a good and informative thread. I hope no one will feel afraid to participate.

I am not sure if that really helps or not, but that is what we are working for! I would love to keep a show girl back too!

When I first started talking about breeding on here, there was one person that blasted me all to heck and then wrote me long elaborate pm's about why I should not breed (this person is into rescues) and demanded to know why I wanted to breed. I finally got so fed up. I told the person that I want to breed to pay my credit caards off. LOL. I am on an ignore list now.:D :cry:

Wrenee thank you SO MUCH for taking that bold first step in posting. Sugars Mom, I completely understand, as the former director of a rescue, it took a lot to convince myself TO BREED. It's a matter of "doing it right" that makes the difference. People are going to buy puppies regardless if there are a million homeless dogs, yes many adopt, and GOOD FOR THEM!!!!! :thumbup: :thumbup: However, if people who are doing things by the book, breeding correct, healthy dogs are not the ones with an occasional puppy available, it is the BYB's and Mills that are going to be getting the puppy buyers who are not interested in adopting .. and to me that is just as bad. Personally I would rather someone adopt from a rescue or a shelter than buy a puppy from me (not that I have very many puppies..lol) but some people just don't WANT a rescued dog, in which case, there is a need for reputible breeders. So I completely understand both sides of the fence.

I am surprised at the lack of response! I would think people would fell proud of their breeding programs and would not mind answering questions!

Soemday I perosnally want to breed. But there ar emany thigns for me to do first, learn more! I still have no yorkies in site but I plan to show first. THen breed...many years down the road! But I learn as much as I can.
Why do I want to breed? Well I have two PET yorkies, I love these two like my kids (I have those too..) but they are what I call Super Pet quality, they have so many faults that it drives me crazy. I have looked, gone to shows, and there are very few good quality yorkies. I want to bring that to my part of the country. Plus I love yorkies....

Well okay, I am not afraid to answer..just kind of wanted others responses, as this wasn't about me, LOL..but here goes..

1. . Why did you choose to breed the bitch? In each of the 3 litters I've had born, I have bred the bitch in hopes of a show prospect for myself.
2. How did you choose the male you bred her to? Looks, size, pedigree, etc?Pedigree, working with lines I want to bring into what will eventually be my own, and picking the particular male to most compliment the particular bitch, while reducing the faults I want to eliminate.
3. What registry is your bitch, and sire registered with?AKC Only
4. What is your intentions in breeding? As in: 1. Show prospects 2. Pet puppies 3. supplemental income 4. For the heck of it, etc. etc. At this point I have only bred a litter in hopes of something for myself to either SHOW, or produce something that will be able to be brought back into the lines I'm working with to themselves produce something for my show "habit"..lol
5. What characteristics of both male and female did you hope to produce with your litter?Well without going into detail about each litter I've bred, I guess I'll sum up my ultimate goal.. ultimately I want to produce a dog that is going to give me what I PERSONALLY view as the "perfect dog"..however perfect being always just out of reach, I try to produce sound health, solid balanced structure, color holding thick silk coat w/ good texture, and a pleasing head. Each breeding has worked towards one or more of those goals.
And lastly 6. How many puppies were produced and what sexes, what registries were those pups registered with? 1st litter, 2F, 1M (1 living F,)AKC, 2nd litter, 2M 1F (AKC) and 3rd litter 2 M 1F (1 living M, 1 living F) AKC

The other question I was going to ask was about health screenings in dogs bred, which my answer would be brucellosis, soundness of patellas and overall bone structure, clear heart, strong trachea, and bile acid for LS. Eventually I may incorporate thyroid as well.

So that's my answer! :)

She was noted by breeders to be right in the breed standard.

I took the advice of a 30 year old breeder and used her male.

3. What registry is your bitch, and sire registered with?
Both are AKC

4. What is your intentions in breeding?
As a hobby for pet quality.

5. What characteristics of both male and female did you hope to produce with your litter?
I'd like them to stay in breed standard.

And lastly 6. How many puppies were produced and what sexes, what registries were those pups registered with?
4 - all AKC 2 boys - 2 girls

Ok, I didn't have time to complete my whole answer on this as it was time to go back to work for me :) Let's see between the two we have 42 AKC Champions in the last 5 generations. Our male is Championed sired and our female UKC Champ. sired (although she is AKC registered). I have attached photos of both so you can see them both. I just can see that perfect show puppy!! Ok, if I can pick out the best features of both and make my puppy that would be great! LOL!!!! I am wanting and wishing out of both is for Gizmo's face, his wonderful "look at me everyone" attitude then Paris's body style and hair. That is the puppy I am wishing for between them :) I am soooo excited! :)

I'm not a breeder but could I ask a question, please? Is there a general size that the show judges seem to prefer? I know the standard says under 7 pounds but is it usually closer to say 5 or 6 than 3 or 4? Sorry for the interruption, but knew this bunch would know the answer. Thanks,:)

Wrenee, It looks as if You've got yourself a nice start. Best of luck with your litter!!!

Okay, I also have sensitive feelings so if you want to be mean to me just pm each other and don't let me know about it.

Here it goes.

1. We selected Roxi because of her size, color, comformation, her coat,what her parents looked like and her personallity. We only decided to breed her after I showed her and she received her champion. Yes we have only showed APR, but there are quit a few people who dual registar their AKC dogs with the APR and show them at APR shows. Roxi is only registarred APR. But she was too perfect to pass up.

2. Titan was actually the second stud we chose. After the original was about 10 months old, it was very apparent that he was not a suitable match for Roxi (and to start out with we decide to start small and eventually move to a few more dogs). So we traded him for titan who is a much better fit for Roxi. They both have very simallar characteristics and he is a good size for Roxi.

3. Roxi is APR and Titan is AKC. We plan on eventually get a couple more girls and they will probably be AKC.

4. My intentions when I started breeding was just to get a Yorkie; however, the agreement my husband and I had was that I could get a Yorkie if I got 2 and breed them. I have always wanted a Yorkie and love animals that I jumped at the chance to get two Yorkies. However, I feel that I've made good decissions on the dogs I got and didn't just pick up any two dogs off the street. I eventually intend to show Titan in AKC shows (he has been to an APR show and did really well), but he just turned a year old and I would like him to be a little more filled out. I would love to have a house full of Yorkies and just breed to get more for me to keep, but my hubby says I have to sell some before I get more.

5. The main characteristic that I hope to pass on is temperment. Both my dogs are very easy going and enjoy the company of anyone (but prefer me). Both have pretty good comformation and really nice silky coats (I cried when I had to trim Roxi's because she is expecting)

6 We are just expecting our first litter next week. We'll let you know how many there are when they show up.

2. How did you choose the male you bred her to? Looks, size, pedigree, etc? I chose my male on his looks, pedigree, conformation and size. His lines are very strong and produce strong, healthy babies.
3. What registry is your bitch, and sire registered with? AKC

For the heck of it, etc. etc. Probably not what anyone wants to hear, but to be completely honest, it started as a hobby. We have a farm and have Boer goats. I'm really into our breeding program with them. I have loved Yorkies all my life. A good friend of mine owns a kennel and we discussed it at length. My hubby agreed to let me get 2 females and it has gone from there. Now, after I've had them and they've each had a litter I'm learning more and more. I eventually want to get into showing and I want to produce my own show quality pup. Plus, this has been an awesome experience for my whole family. My kids have learned so much and I hope that they will get into showing as well.
5. What characteristics of both male and female did you hope to produce with your litter? For all of my puppies, I wanted to produce small faces, a great ear set, small ears, good coat quality and great temperament.
And lastly 6. How many puppies were produced and what sexes, what registries were those pups registered with? With Blossom's litter, we had 2M 1F all reg. AKC. Shyla had 2F 1M and they are also reg. AKC.

I have a question, if you guys don't mind my asking, since a yorkie's color can change so much during their growth, at what age do you choose yours by their looks/appearance or do you just go by what the parents look like?

When we choose Autumn we were hoping to get a dark yorkie with a red face and red legs. She is silver and has a lot of blonde. I soooo don't care because I love her so much! But I really want to know if there is anyway to know what color they will turn out to be at a young age?

going by the parent's, I think, is the best bet. All Yorkies, or most anyway, are black and tan when born.

I think that the reason for breeding as a hobby is great! I would be quite flamed if I read, "I breed for the money, I want a job I can stay home at and doing nothing..." Can you just imagine the fire?????? lol:eek: :eek: :eek: :p

Breeding teaches kids how fragile life really is, rewarding and heartbreaking. Very hard lessons.
