hello all..fendi and the three pups are doing great..fendi is on valum so shes very calm and much easier to deal with...but i dont know what to do now?...one grl opened her eyes and she wakes everyone up....is there anything i should be changing?...i give them 6 ccz formula and 1 cc water...should they have more...i feed them every 4 hrs or 5 trying but they wake up every 2 1/2 to 3 hrs...how much longer do i feed them like this? i think i have to start changing there formula to food at 8 wks? but what can i do for them to make home and life a better place...is there anything i should change now that there eyes are open...shesh im going to stop it seems like i keep asking the same ?z over and over again...thanks :aimeeyork

You should be feeding 1 cc of formula per ounce of body weight at each feeding. Unless they're only 6 ounces (which is doubtful) you are not feeding enough at each feeding. No need to feed water separately - they get plenty from the formula. Each feeding should be 3 hours apart, not 4 or 5 hours. They're about 2 and 1/2 weeks now? Hang in there you're almost there. At about 3 1/2 weeks you can start letting them lap the milk replacer from a saucer, then after they get the hang of it start adding canned puppy food or powdered dry puppy food (chopped up in a food processor) to make a soupy meal. You'll still need to prepare the food several times a day, but at least they will eat it on their own and then you can probably lengthen the time between feedings. By the time the pups are about 4 1/2 to 5 weeks you can probably get away with feeding them at around 11 and "sleeping in" until 5 or 6. Since they're not getting any "milk" from Mom I think I would continue moistening the food with the milk replacer until at least 6 weeks and then you could go to water for moistening. If they are having runny stools you may need to change to water sooner though.

Yes, at that age I was feeding every two hours. 4-5 is too long. I never really measured but let her eat until she refused the bottle and then I knew she was full. Good luck!

o wow my vet told me i could go over night with out feeding them and about 4-5 hrs between feeding...they are fat and very strong they walk a little and all...but il change there feeding now...when ther sleeping should i wake them to eat???...i usually leave them a lil longer and then if they dont wake i wake them...but they seem to be peeing on themselves now is this normal? and they are constipated and dont go after every feeding more like once a day? vet said this is oki but it wrys me...thank you fo your replys we all appreciate it :animal36 :animal36 :animal36 :aimeeyork

Yes, I woke Tia up to feed.
Did your post say that they are peeing on themselves or did you mean peeing on their own? Peeing on their own is normal, but not peeing on themselves.
FYI: My pups don't poo after every meal.

The problem with only feeding every 4 or 5 hours is they are not able to each enough in each feeding to meet the total intake they need any 24 hours. I am surprised they are not demanding feeding though. If you feed 1 cc per ounce of body weight every 3 hours that's 8 times a day, but if you are only feeding 4 or 5 times a day I would think they would not be getting enough food.

Have you had the Mom's stool checked for worms? Maybe the fat bellies are due to worms? How much are they weighing now?

Are you still stimulating them to poo and pee by wiping with a warm rag? or is Mom still doing this part? I think this is necessary until about 3 weeks. I don't think peeing on themselves is normal, but maybe at that age it is since usually Mom is still stimulating and cleaning it up.

What formula are you feeding? I would think they need to be going poo more than once a day, but not after every meal. Is it hard when it comes out or soft?

i have changed ther feeding to every 3 hrs...and 1 cc per body weight...chanel weighs 7 1/2 oz...juicy weighs 8 oz...onyx weighs 7 5/8 oz..so im feeding them all about the same just a little more for juicy shes always hungry..she can eat probably 16 ccz if i gave it to her and want more thats y we named her juicy...i havnt gotten the mother cheked for worms i didnt know i was supposed to...but the father had a hstory of worms as a pup but was clear for about 2 months or a month b4 my lil grl got pregnant...so i definatly will call on tuesday to see if its necessary to get them checked now...also they are not pooping everyday but every other day or on the second day...which worries me a bit...but only the boys is poop is clayish...the rest of them is soft...i am rubbing them...and occasionaly the mommy wants to but i am doing it most of the time...i like it better when i do it bc i know exactly who went and what they each did...well what i find is one sucking on the other i think...bc ones head will be wet and the other will be bottom wet...or they will all be wet...im guna start making them pee in between feedings...i am giving them esbilac can...thank you all

They're going to be tiny ones according to their current weights.

Always test the Mom for worms after whelping even if you wormed her prior to breeding. Dogs can have worms lying dormant in their intestines that become active in the last stages of pregnancy and they can infect the pups while still in the uterus or from nursing. Worms can multiply very, very quickly in a pup. If Mom's clear than I don't worm the puppies.

what about if the father had worms? and how dangerous is it for the pups?

The father is not going to pass worms on to his offspring through his sperm, if that's what you mean.:rolleyes:

However, if the father did pass on worm's..wouldn't the mom have gotten worms and had them during gestation..I am so slow please help me understand!

i have 2 seven week old puppies. my first litter. i found one of the ladies that always post threads, website i think it is yorkiepassions.com (if you read this you have a wonderful website) i went through her pics to see about when my pups would start looking cute like the irresistible pups they are NOW. i had a problem with worms!!!!!!! then i went through internet and one site said you deworm at 2 weeks then i week later then 2 weeks after that and so on. my vet told me they should be wormed at 4 weeks. so i did 4 weeks SHOCKER!!!! that was nothing nice. one of my pups had the sign which was a big round belly. anyways you should call a vet. from my experience you should call more then one and just ask about worming. i read about nemex 2 and it said it was safe on pregnant moms and puppies. i found that my local feed store had some in stock after paying more over the internet. some people on yorkietalk have said they never had a prob with worms but the 2 vets i talked to said most puppies are born with them. you should really look in to deworming. as for regular food my puppies started eating at 6 weeks. they only had cainine teeth but still ate. now at 7 weeks they are getting the other teeth in. so eating is no problem and as for crying i noticed if i let them run around for a good 20-30 min they have no problem sleeping through the night.

Like Platinum Yorkies said worms can't be passed through the male's sperm; the eggs are passed and shed in the digestional tract, uterus of pregnant Mom to pups, or through the mammary glands while nursing.

However, if the male had worms and was cleaning himself or stepped in his poo or another's poo contaminated with eggs and then licked his feet and then kissed your dog - she could get worms this way. Or, if he pooed in your environment, and your Mom stepped in it and then licked her feet she could get worms or if she licked her pups she could give it to them this way. That is why it is so important to clean up poo quickly to keep worms from being passed back and forth.

One negative test is not proof positive that a dog is worm free that is why most vets recommend worming all pups and Mom starting at 2, 3, 4, 6, 8 and 10 weeks with pyrantal pamoate (not all wormers can be used on pups under 8 weeks, read the directions). With Yorkies though I feel any use of toxins unnecessarily should be avoided so I test Mom after birth and again at 4 weeks post whelping, no sign of worms, no deworming and then I again test the puppies at 8 weeks (or sooner if I see any signs of worms).

Fecal exams are cheap and don't require an appointment, or at least with my vet.

hey DM our puppies were born on the same day!!!! i read about how your dog had a c-section mine did too. my mom got an infection also. my pups are big though 2 pound 7 week old yes i said it! 2 pounds. have your puppies tried to eat regular food yet?? mine started last week.

well i am going to get ther poo in a zip lock and bring it in for testing...i will also do the same for the mom...they all just went to il have to try and get some tomorrow out of them thank you all
