Do all puppies have worms???? Im new at breeding dog (my first litter) and last week my puppies were 4 weeks old so i took them to get dewormed. the vet confirmed that they had worms and gave them medicine for it. well right after i droped the puppies off at the house and my husband and i went to dinner and a movie. we were gone about 4 hours. the first thing i did when i got home was check on the puppies. i forgot to mention i have a worm phobia. well i never really thought about the word DEWORM untill that day. i almost had a heart attack there were 2 piles of what looked like rubber bands on the floor. i was shaking, sweating, screaming im telling you i was practically in cardiac arrest at the ripe old age of 28. my husband had to get rid of them. anyways what i wanted to know was do all puppies have worms?????? If so i think this will be my last litter. :fainted: |
Our puppies have yet to have worms (fingers crossed). We get the mother tested before she is expecting and again before she has puppies - always negative. We do have her on heartworm w/wormer so I don't know if that's it or not although I have heard that it is pretty usual to have your puppies have worms. Ours have always came back with negative on the fecal tests. Perhaps others can help more? |
Everything you read says that yes, like 90% of pups are born with worms, but that hasn't been the case with any of my litters. I always take a fecal samples of Moms about a week after whelping. If she has worms then, and only then, do I treat the puppies. I again take fecal samples of the pups at 8 weeks (sooner if they look like they have a potbelly) to be sure they don't have them or have gotten rid of them if I have done worming treatments. Worms can be dormant in the lining of the mother's intestines and don't become active until the later stages of pregnancy and then are passed on to the pups through the milk. So even if you worm your mom prior to pregnancy and she has a negative test for worms prior to pregnancy, there is still a chance the pups can have worms. |
Did your vet instruct you to come back for another worming treatment? Also did you treat the Mom? If not, they will just pass them back and forth? |
i am faithful with the heartworm medicine and of course it takes care of other worms for the mom. just seeing a pile of worms after the deworming is something i will never forget!!!!!!!!! |

i asked the vet if the mom should be dewormed and he said no because she is on the heartworm prevention and that will take care of moms worms so i assume it means mom is immune from worms??? i dont know just trying to make it make sense. mom likes to dig and i think that is how she gets it. being such a worm freak, i did ask if i should deworm the mom and i was told no. |
I am sure the vet knows more than I do. Maybe the heartworm meds kill the adult worms, but are not effective against the larvae stages which is what migrates through the milk. |
Curious did you see any signs of worms, like a pot belly at 4 weeks? Also did your vet say you were going to repeat the treatment again at 6, 8 and 10 weeks? |
I have a question. You said you dewormed the mother dog if she had worms before she had the pups. Is this safe?? It won't hurt the puppies she has in her?? I would like to use as few chemicals as possible. I know flea medicine is a big no and heartworm medicine is debatable for some. Just curious whether deworming the mother dog is 100% safe for the puppy's she is carrying. Also, this might be a stupid question, but how do they pick up the worms?? If the mother is dewormed regualarly and has been tested negative for worms and lives in a clean environment how are the puppies born with worms?? |
My pups have never had worms either. I also feel very blessed about that. I think your Mamma dog would have to have worms....there really isn't another way for your pups to get them unless they are around other animals (which they shouldn't be at that age). I'd give the vet a call and ask him how your pups could have worms if the mother doesn't. I can imagine how freaked out you were:eek: ! I'd freak too! Hope your pups are all healthy and you never enounter another worm:) . P.S. Keep their area very clean and don't take them outside yet. |
Hee hee hee.... Hummmmmmm I bet going fishing and baiting your own hook is out of the question for you!!:D We havent had many worms and fortunately when we did it was usually just a single rubberband.:) not a pile of them. That was quite awhile ago too, before I wormed mom right before mating. I dont get fecal exams with puppies so I routinely worm with panacur for 3 days also. Havent seen a worm in quite awhile. I havent a worm phobia but I hate snakes! Good thing puppies dont poop snakes. Your post made me laugh! |
worms The bitch can have a negative stool check and still pass worm larva to the pups..the worm larva lays dormant in the systems of some bitches and under stress..such as breeding, whelping, nursing, they are transmitted...read about worms and breeding. I had them with a litter of Doxies once..but the Yorks never got them..I had the Doxie dewormed even though the stool was negative before each breeding..kept her on heart worms med and no other litters got them. It does not hurt to worm a bitch BEFORE breeding. I am not in favor or rountine worming of pusp without a stool check..no worms, no worming. |
No, not all puppies have worms. |
explained to me by my vet......if the bitch has ever had worms, eggs lay dormit in the womb. once the pups are born, they can come out with worms. the bitch can get worms again due to the fact they eat their waste. even if the bitch test neg, the pups can still get worms. |
