I am not sure I agree with the vet 100%...dogs do odd things..not all bitches will fight to protect their pups...a more passive bitch will back off from the aggressive one...but then again, it is entirely possible...
This is not pleasant, but if you want to know which one killed and devoured the pups..you only need to watch the stools...

i see your point but out of the two girls the mum of the pups is the more aggressive she is top dog between the two i must say i do not feel my mum should breed with her again but mum says she will try again i would feel like it was too much of a risk for the babes do you agree

My father in Law breeds German Shepherds, and he has one female that he bred once when she was younger, and she killed all of her pups but one, my father in law saved that one, but I remember being so shocked to hear about it, the mom was always the sweetest dog. We all thought maybe it was because it was her first litter and she got nervous, or whatever, but he said that sometimes dogs will do that instinctively if there is someting wrong with the pups, even something that we humans cannot detect yet...

He tried breeding her once more I think a year later, and she killed all of the pups in that litter as well. He never bred her again. She was also the kind of mom that didn't want to be left with her pups, and left them alone often. It was when my father in law penned them up together and away from the other dogs to encourage her to take care of the pups/nurse them, that this happened.

I am so sorry for your loss, I think it is entirely possible what the vet said, that the mom may have been the one to kill the pups, not the other female. But if you didn't see it, then I would look in the stools (like YorkieRose suggested). Not pleasant, but you may get your answer that way-

looking at the dogs stools wont help i am afraid she did not eat them she bit through there throats and chewed there faces off sorry to be so graphic but thats what happened i feel it will be an silly risk to breed from her again one i would not rest easy with myself

So sorry that this has happened, but nature is a funny thing we once had a rabbit that killed all of her babies but then had another litter and was fine wih them! It has been an awful event for you all,maybe the mum did it ,or maybe the other dog but its hard to accept which ever one it was, hope your mum is not blaming herself too much as awful things happen sometimes.

I have read about this when I wanted to breed my yorkies this is so very SAD I'm sorry for your loss, my heart breakes for your mother and all. When mine is getting ready to have the pups I'm right there, the first litter I stay up allnight with her, and then I bought them upstairs and put them in a playpen right be side me for the first week I slept in my Chair after that I put her in her pin with pups and every thing when well, so now I know she will take care of her pups. i am exactly the same with my babies they were born on monday they are so precious and helpless i hope i can talk my mum out of breeding this bitch again i cannot bear the thought of helpless pups killed again, i must say Dee Dee my baby girl is doing so well with her first litter i am so proud of her i cried to see her in the pain of labor, please how can i tell my mum the fears i have over her breeding this bitch i do not want to upset her but i feel this is wrong and maybe she is not a natural mom

If you are SURE it was the mom yorkie and not the other one, If it was me I would just tell her the way you have told all of us!! I can't say if she done it once she'll do it again I'm not saying that at all b/c know one knows for sure. Since you feel this way, just tell in a nice way, It may save her alot of heartach later on. I'm so sad for you.

If the mother did indeed kill the babies, she will most likely do it again. I have a pair of birds that kill their young. At first, I thought the babies were just dying because something was wrong with them. Next clutch, parts were eaten off and I blamed the Dad and removed him. Then I started removing the babies very early because they seemed fine with them for 5 days or so. Then she started killing the babies earlier almost at birth. Needless to say, we no longer breed those two birds. The situation got progressively worse with each clutch (litter).

The other dog might have done it though too. In wolf packs only the Alpha female breeds and she will kill other female puppies.

My little dog who killed another dogs pups did it and nothing happened between the 2 females... it was like the mama dog wasn't aware of what was happening to her babies. So I'm not sure if I agree with you're vet's explanation...

as this happened when someone came to the door i would say the pups were killed due to that, when someone knocks on the door and the dogs are alerted maybe growling, one dog can take it the wrong way and think the pups are causeing the problem, ie when i had scampi and the door bell went quite often a fight would brake out between the dogs as all would be barking and growling and on full alert and then as one looked at the other they would think that dog was having a go at them so would attack each other, dogs let off a smell also when alert or fearful, so maybe the knock at the door caused the dogs to get confussed and attack the pups, the other dog could of senced the mothers fear and mistaken it and attacked the pups which she thought was pretecting the mother, or the mother could of killed the pups by mistaking the fear from the other dog or even both could of done it. its seems very strange that it happened after someone knocked on the door and not at any other time.
