How often do you breed? I have a quick question that I hope some of you breeders can help me with. I don't want to get into breeding or anything I'm just curious, how many litters per year would you let your girls have? The reason for the question is that the breeder I got Lucy from has one female of breeding age. I know her first litter was Oct 04, the second was May 05, a third Dec 05 and the fourth litter is due in June. That seems sort of excessive, I think one litter per year would be better for the dog. Do you let your girls rest in between litters or is this standard practice? |
sounds like alot to me but im not a breeder |
It really depends on the dog herself and how the litter went Most breeders breed once a year. Some may breed every other heat cycle or breed two heat cycles and give two heats off. Pretty much either way that still be only two litters in two years. I hope that helps! PS I would NEVER have a female have puppies that often! |
The local breeders I know, breed twice then have once off. |
Jmo JMO from 30 years plus of breeding experience...non-stop breeding is done for one reason..MONEY. There are no hard, fast rules..you must go bitch by bitch, litter by litter. I do not do more then two in a row..unless the bitch comes in season only once in a 12 month period..that is a "natural rester"..one litter after another until the btich is all used up is the puppymillers creed. |
Thanks for the input. I think her intentions were good in the beginning and I know she loves her dogs, but I think the money is becoming more important. Lucy came from the May 05 litter and she really did a great job raising her. I was thinking of getting another puppy from her in 1-2 years, we'll just have to wait and see. Thanks again for the replies. |
advice please! my yorkie had her first litter in feb this year she had them smoothly only complication was we had 1 still born and lost one to fading puppy syndrome other than that she coped really well, she had a season in april when the puppies left us and she is having a season now(june)on reading lots of info and talking to breeders having a season so soon after the pups and having one now is normal she has had a sucsessfull tie with our male yorkie today so looks like we will have another litter, as she is fit and well, i was thinking of letting her have this litter then a rest of 2 seasons or we might spay her depending on how she is with this secound litter anyone who has knowledge on breeding id like your input on what you think is the best and safest for mum thanks for reading look forward to any replys:) |
A breeder here in town is expecting to whelp a litter today. She has bred this bitch 4 times in a row. I totally disagree with it. I know that I would HATE to be pregnant 4 times in a row. The body needs rest. Breed 2 cycles and sit out. But, it depends on the girl. Some girls may need to be bred every other cycle. |
Can somebody tell me please, my Yorkie girl 1year and 5 months old, she has her second period now, also I have a Yorkie boy , he is 1 year old, he is trying to jump on girl and do his things, and yesterday on 9th day I noticed they were glued together for like 10 min., and then they came apart. I don’t mind if they going to have a babies , of cause I’m not going to breed her every period I know it’s no good for the girl, I just want her to have a babies once. My question is: Is that possible that they going to gave a puppies? Is the boy mature enough to fertilize? (he is 1 year and 15 days old) Thank you for your answer |

Is that your dog in your avatar (picture)? |
Thanks TXSHOPPER73 I’m already marked my calendar, and hopefully will be expecting puppies August 26. Now I’m reading all the information on the internet about pregnancy and delivery, kind of nervous. On my avatar picture it’s the father of my Yorkie boy (he is 9 month old on that picture), he is a champion of Europe, I went to France especial to buy my puppy boy, I paid 3,500 Euros for him last year., he is so small and cute, his mom also a champion of Russia and Germany in my Photo Gallery you can see his mother too on the ring with the red bow, she has very long coat. I love Yorkie, now I have two, and if my girl is going to have a puppies, maybe I’ll keep another one for myself. :) |

Anywho...try to learn all you can between now and the delivery date. Start learning NOW, don't wait until you find out for sure she is prego and only allow yourself a week to learn what many take years studying. There is alot of good info here, but you also need to find a mentor to work with and a good vet with reproductive knowledge.:) |
Congratulations congratulations on your puppies. My first litter is due the same day. I have spent well over a year researching and gleaning great advice from this board so I felt ready to breed. My little stud has been tested for genetic defects. The boy in your avatar is beautiful and if your little man is anything like him, your puppies will be beautiful. you were given great advice to read and learn all you can about whelping and care of the mom and puppies while you wait. I feel ready but I bet I will be so nervous at that time, I will forget everything I have learned. |
wow i have never heard of a dog having 4 litters in one year that's outrageous. i thought they only came in season every 6 months |

ah ok then that makes a little more sense poor little dog |
My breeder does it every other heat . . .and that is what he recommends me to do . . .so I will for probably do it for a couple of years only . . .don't want to sell too many yorkies . . .just want to give them to my family . . this way I can still see them whenever I want to  or perhaps by then I can convince my DH more is good :D |
My Abby is 5 and has had 3 litters. Her last litter was in march and it is aug. and she is in heat again. She has never had a problem and has had all healthy puppies. I want to breed her one more time and then fix her. Is it to soon to breed her again. She is in really good health. I hear a lot of breeders have bred back to back cycles. |
The thinking on this, by majority of well known reproductive vets, is breed back to back, if you are keeping your lady in tip top shape...these breeders have to be treated like athletes...best diets, exercise, etc....It is the hormones that flood an intact, UNBRED females reproductive system, that causes all the problems and really tears our girls down. You make sure they are in the best physical and mental condition they can be in, breed them back to back, and then you spay them immediately, when you no longer want to breed them. That is what is best for the female. If you are having problems with your female, while carrying the babies, or during/after whelping, you may need to reconsider breeding that female at all. |
i would never breed my female that many times and back to back. maybe it is for money my yorkie had her first litter at 2 on her 3rd heat and then 4 heats and 1 1/2 yrs later she should be pregnant again now . after this i doubt ill breed her again i think 2 times is enough for her shes 4 1/2 lbs and going to be 4 in december. Last time pregnancy was perfect no nausea vomiting or diarrhea even after eating everything she she was in labor. she did so good, last litter went to family member, this time im keeping them except one will go to my mom.:aimeeyork |
