whelped on day 54! help.... Hello everybody..... Last night was just horrible. My husband and I went out to have drinks with a friend turning 40. Everything was fine. We came home early because I didn't like leaving Mae home since it was close to her day. My Mae was due on the 18th. I still had over a week to go.........I came home and she was acting normal.... my hubby and I got pizza and was going to snuggle in bed and watch a movie and eat pizza. I took Mae up with us and again.... normal, normal, normal. This is her 3rd litter... she has done this before.....no problem.... ALL on time. So anyway..... we were starting the movie and Mae was right next to me...... I look down cause I hear her chewing on something and I see a baby in her mouth!!!!!!! Oh my god.... she was trying to break the sack.... I took it from her and starting working on him and he was still. He didn't look alive coming out and I knew with the date.... it was tooooo soon. So I assumed the other 2 were going to be still as well. She whelped the next within minutes without problems.... and I grabbed her and took her to the bathroon..... she was moving so I tied and cut and took her mucous out..... and I gave her back to mom and the next one was here too and I did the same....... the last 2 girls are alive. I spent the night nursing every hour and kept them warm. They look very undeveloped and I know they may not survive. But they lasted through the night and are still very strong. I've never delivered puppies this early and I don't know wht this happened. I guess it's life.... but has any breeders bred this early? And have they survived? Is there something special I should do? They seem to cry a lot more than a normal litter. Any advice or suggestions would be apprieciated! |
litter I wish I could be of help...all you can do is make sure they are warm and fed. Do you know how to tube feed? Taking them out to the vet would surily stress them even more, so I am not big on vet intervention at this point, unless you want them to tube feed them...at this stage, they will even make it or they will not..I wish you all the best. |
Hello how are the babies doing this morning? She sure had them early ..are you sure of the dates?... I don't know what to tell you,..but to keep them warm and make sure they nursing. You may have to make a run to the Vets office, so they can show you how to tube feed them... If they are not able to nurse on there own. I'm not sure what the chance are for them since they are so early..maybe one of the other breeder will be on soon who has dealt with this... I hope all go well. |

Hugs and prayers to those babies and momma!! I hope everyone is ok and keep up updated!! :D |
pups They are nursing and that is wonderful!!!! I have had live litters at 56 days..good luck to you. |
We are keeping your little girls in our thoughts...please keep us updated on them!! |
I used to raise Poms and I had a litter that was 13 days early. I know this sound unconventional but it worked for me. I had a cat that had a litter of kittens 2 days before. Only one of the pups was born alive and I gave the pup to the cat. She took it in and nursed it. She could tell it was not like her other babies and was super protective of him. That pup celebrated his 7th bday this Jan. If you do not have a cat--call the vet and see if he knows of where one might be that has just given birth. The cat owner would probably be willing to give it a go! Good Luck! |
Wow I hope momma and baby girls continue to thrive. Please keep us updated. |
Hi.... just updating.... they are still good.... my mentor is coming at 3:00 so I will feel better when she is here. But they are still nursing and seem OK.... crying less but still ofcourse small. Still nervous and worried. |
Good luck. Thinking and praying for those tiny babies...... |
Keep us updated. I've seen pups at that stage and frankly, they reminded me a lot of pinkies. Very underdeveloped, had not hair. Hugs are coming your way! If they do pull through, I'd keep them as well...miracle babies! |
Some of my girls give birth at 54 days and never had problems . |
OK.... so we figured the first boy that came out had died inside her..... they was this black goo that came out with him. Since Mae was expelling that pup..... she went into labor with the other 2 girls. Which is why they are pre mature. I hope they will be OK.... they still seem healthy and I'm feeding them on the hour. They are nursing once I open the mouths and place it on the nipple........ |
Does the mom seem to have a good flow of milk? I wish you and the puppies the best. keep us updates on them. and im sorry you lost the little boy. |
im praying for you guys!! I really hope your two new little girls make it!! Keep us updated, and you know we would love some pictures! |
I just wanted to say I'm praying for you and your little girls. I hope they make it. Good luck.. |
Sending you our thoughts and prayers. Keep us posted. I think it's a good sign the girls are active and nursing well! |
I just had this experience. A month ago. The litter was born on day 56 little hair. They were lively and everything but didn't survive the night. They need to hold temperature to survive. My pups weren't hodling their temp so there was nothing to do to save them. Hopefully you will have a miracle and your babies will survive. I will be praying and hoping, but if not, dont' beat yourself up. There is really nothing more we can do. This was a lesson I learned from my own experience. I wish you Mae and the babies well!! Praying for you all in Ohio :aimeeyork |
24 hours later.... they are still doing good. I have a heat lamp going but I also have a snuggle safe warmer in their blanket. I'm trying ti make sure it doesn't get too hot for them or they don't get dehydrated. But I won't feel safe till they are at least 4 weeks old... probably 5 when I wean them. Pleeeeeeese....pleeeese let me keep these guys. They look so fragile.... I hope they will be OK. Thank you all for your kind words and prayers. |
OH my god bless these little girls, theyre fighters, youre doing everything you can possibly do, I pray they make it! |
More prayers coming from Ohio. I lost a litter of two last month. They couldn't maintain the body heat. Both died the same day they were born. I realize now that there was nothing I could have done to save them. I pray everthing works out for you. I don't like taking pups out in the cold either but living in Ohio, it's a necessity. I get a small box, big enough for the mom and pups, fold up a nice fleece blanket but leave enough that I can cover all of them, just as you would cover a human babies face when you take them out. |

I'm sorry the little boy didn't make it. I will be praying for your girls. |
day 2...... so the little girl was getting a little chill this morning. She was losing temp..... so I rubbed and rubbed and kept her on my warm hands and she made it! At least for now..... she was able to get a good nursing and she is warm again. Didn't sleep a wink last night.... was so worried and my other dogs were going crazy last night. One of the other girls knows something is up and has been crying for me to bring her up.(I've been keeping MaeMae and her pups next to me in bed so I can watch them.) How my hubby was able to sleep and snore is BEYOND me...... Maeson, my parrot, starting screaming this morning. The whole house was loud. We need positive energy here...... |
Just wanted to say were still thinking of you. Hope they are doing well.. |
condolences to the little boy that didn't make it  and prayers to your 2 little girls how are they doing? |
