too young to leave mother Hi everyone! I felt this was a good place to ask this question as most of you are breeders. I am thinking about buying a male yorkie from a hobby breeder. My question for you is, is 7 weeks old and only 1lb too young to leave it's mom? The woman said that he is eating and drinking on his own because his mom is all dried up, Myself not knowing much about this thinks that is entirely too small to be seperated from his mom. The pup is akc, all shots and worming. She did not mention a health quarentee, but she was originally asking $800 but she said she would let him go for $650. I saw pics of the pup and he is adorable, but I do not have a real good feeling about this. Any suggestions? Thanks meeshue |
Wow, that sounds very young. Even larger dogs I think you should wait until 8 weeks. I thought 8-12 for Yorkies was "normal" but there are probebly others on here that could tell you beter. Good luck! |
To young, a good breeder will keep the pups until they are 12 weeks and in some states it is against the law to sell a puppy before 8 weeks. |
Absolutley not. I would not do it until he is at least 8 weeks. He needs to gain a few more ounces. I got Rebel when he was 6 weeks but the breeder told me he was 8 weeks...found out months later when I finally got his AKC puppy papers his real age and I WAS PI$$ED!!!!! Anyway, I'm sure she's ready to get rid of him but he needs to stay with mom just a little while longer. If she doesn't want to do this, then I'd find a different pup with a different breeder that actually cares more about the pup than herself. |
That was well said, Kimberly. You took what I was going to say and said it better. |
Go with your feelings. She should not be wanting to let it go this soon. Another month will make a world of difference. Ask her if she will keep it another month. |
Thank you all very much for your quick replies. I agree! From what I have read on yorkies and all the sites I saw most breeders would not let the pup go untill 12 weeks. I quess I will stay away on this one. I have waited this long for a yorkie I quess a little longer would not hurt. By the way she is located in Ohio. Thanks again meeshue |
There is a breeder in town that lets them go at 6 weeks and I do not refer her for anything...even if she IS the only person that has pups at the time. She says she can get more for them when they are smaller and we all know how tiny 6 week old pups are! :thumbdown |
Way too young to leave. I do not let mine leave till at LEAST 12 weeks of age. And with the smaller ones they don't leave then. I would be a little leary of all this. DId you check for references? |
No I did not get that far yet. When she told me he was 7 weeks I asked her when will he be ready to come home and she said now I was a little shocked. So I told her that I would get back to her and I came here for advice. So thanks for all the info |
Yes that is too young. There are stages of a puppy's development where it is crucial for it to remain with the mother and litter mates longer than 7 weeks. I know that where I live, it is common for breeders to place pups between 6-8 weeks. We keep our pups from 10-12 weeks, depending on the pup, home it will be going to, etc, keeping them longer if we feel it is in the best interest. :) |
run,run run away fast!!! |
:aimeeyork I am so glad that you came here for real facts :aimeeyork its was well said on all other posts, but my favorite warning was RUN RUN and keep going, like a mountain lion is behind you |
Thank you all for your great advice. And like you said, I ran, ran, and ran. |
