worming schedule for puppies? My babies are 3 weeks old tommorow, and other than having to supplement one, they are doing so well. I called the vet to ask about worming them, and they said they just give them the Heartguard at their first appointment. Does this sound right? I thought they needed wormed at 2,4, and 6 weeks. They kindof have skunk breath and I had read this could be caused by worms, so it that is the case I would like to take care of it. What do most breeders do? |
worming Collect a couple stools and have them checked at 5 to 6 weeks. If there are worms you can worm then..but if not, I do one worming at 8 weeks. If a breder has a worm problem in their kennel, they need a schedule fo worming..but if not one routine worming works. If there is any chance of hooks, get them wormed asap. |
I use pyran 50 ...2ml first dose at 4 weeks, 1ml per pound at 6 weeks and again at 8 weeks, percautionary. I also worm the mom. hope this helps |

Stools are checked at each vet visit. My vet runs 3 different tests each time: 1. Fecal Float 2. Gram Stain 3. Wet Mount to ensure active bacteria and parasites are not present. Only if found meds are perscibed or wormer is given. |

worming I agree with Irene, I am big on having stool checks..no worms, no need to worm. It can be very dangerous to run toxins through pups for no reason...my vets opinion also. He was the one who stopped me worming routinely. |
Thanks for all the help. I will just have their stools checked when they go in for their first shots and go from there. I don't want to give them anything they don't need. I have heard not to vaccinate at six weeks, but to wait until 8 weeks, is this correct? |
No worming schedule here either. I do have stools done and then treat as needed. My concern is, if a product is toxic enough to kill worms, how safe can it be for the puppy? My old vet said they had a saying in vet school; 2,4,6,8 pyrantel pamoate....but they don't worm on that schedule now.. |

worming When breeding hounds or a breed that is outside on dirt by 4 weeks..and my Doxies were ready to run in the yard and dig in the dirt at 4 and 5 weeks...you have a different way of doing things. When you have a toy breed, you start with the adults. Do a check to make sure they do not have any problems..Keeping them on Heartworm preventative will stop any worm problem, except tapes and they come from fleas..no fleas, no tapes.Then you do stool checks early on pups..if there is no worm or parasite, it is not wise to run toxins through them for good measure. Reseach is showing that Yorkie livers can not take these routine measures without consequences. After a routine dosage of Albon, some will fail a bile acid test. I had a stud client with a two week litter..the vet wanted them brought in for a worming..both were dead by evening. Good Luck |
This is great information. I know Yorkies are different because they are so much smaller. I am grateful for all the help so many of you are willing to offer. My dogs have been on Heartguard, although I took Libbie off in Jan when she was bred because I didn't know if it was a good thing to have her on while pregnant. She will be going back on it this month, we live in Utah and there isn't really any reason to be on it in the winter so the vet said they will just give it to her without making her be tested. We also don't have fleas because of the dry climate ( which isn't to say that you still couldn't get them, just not as common) She is also due to be updated on her shots. I have heard now that you should only update shots everyother year not every year as was previously thought. Any thoughts on this? My vet is very old school, which is fine as long as the health of my dogs isn't compromised but I would like to know from those of you who have bred for a long time what you think about this. Do you just do a titer test and then booster or just booster every year? |
