Keeping breeding pair apart during 1st heat This is a serious question. Beyond the obvious basics--belly bands, diapers, separate crates--whatelse do you do, to avoid a teenage pregnancy ? |
Seperate rooms are even better if you can do it....Seperate crating is key, belly and bands and diapers don't prevent anything, nor do gates or ex-pens that they've never climbed before...and never, ever have them out of the crates at the same time. buy ear plugs for the whining. good luck. |
keeping pair apart 1st heat.... How long/many days does this go on? I've heard 5-7; I've heard 21 days. Can I get the female a shot of deprovera (sp?) for 3 months worth of birth control? Anyone have a vacation home I can escape with my female??? |
I would keep them apart from the beginning to the end..about 3 weeks...that is why I had several doggie rooms and playyards..someone was always "coming or going"... |
we're working on the separate doggie room. And the office will be a separation zone too. I told the husband to take the "boys" fishing, camping or something. I would do a spa weekend with the girls but not for 3 weeks. |
I've heard that dogs can and have bred through a fence (my vet confirmed that this can happen) so I beleive it. I wouldn't just rely on a crate. I would crate but put in seperate rooms behind a closed door. This is the very reason I used a stud on my girls instead of owning my own. I didn't want to have to pen anyone up. But i've decided that I want to own my own stud so I'm going to have to do the same. |
It's for 3 weeks. Is there a family member or close friend that you can trust to take your male during this time? |
