Neutering Question A breeder told me, awhile back, that if you neuter a male puppy, before he is 5 months old, he will never lift his leg to tinkle, he will always squat. Anyone with experience? I would really like to get a little male, but prefer not to have him lift his leg, and tinkle on his coat. (Gosh, I hope that doesn't sound weird.) |
The chances are if you neuter early he won't. But it is no guarantee. He wont be marking but he may still lift his leg. :) |
Thanks, that's kind of what I suspected. Do you have any idea at what age, a male learns to lift his leg? |

My Hefner was neutered as a very young pup.....I am not sure what age but he was neutered when i got him at 12 weeks. He stills lifts his leg when he pees. He does go on his wee wee pads more often than not though. :) |
I think if you have him neutered before 6 months of age he will not mark. I have had 2 male dogs and they were neutered young but still lift their legs to pee. Neutering also helped get rid of some other behaviour too. |

Has Hefner been around other males? Just wondering if lifting the leg is a "learned" thing, or instinct. Sheila |
I can tell you I have several males and some lift and some squat. And none of mine are neutered. But when a female comes in heat some do mark. |
Let's not forget the girls can be markers too. My girls mark in the house (panties are a must), my boys mark outside..you just never can tell..it's always a gamble..lol. But the earlier you have the altered the better your chances are I would say. |

Hi! Loki was neutered at 6 months and he never learned to lift his leg. He squats, still pees on his front foot once in a while though. He doesn't mark in the house and I haven't seen him mark outside either. So, it is true for some dogs! |

Well, I have two that got neutered at 6 months and they still lift their legs! They're brothers so I guess it just depends on the dog itself, maybe if they could read they would know that that isn't what they are supposed to do  ... |
