Neutering Question A breeder told me, awhile back, that if you neuter a male puppy, before he is 5 months old, he will never lift his leg to tinkle, he will always squat. Anyone with experience? I would really like to get a little male, but prefer not to have him lift his leg, and tinkle on his coat. (Gosh, I hope that doesn't sound weird.) |
The chances are if you neuter early he won't. But it is no guarantee. He wont be marking but he may still lift his leg. :) |
Thanks, that's kind of what I suspected. Do you have any idea at what age, a male learns to lift his leg? |

My Hefner was neutered as a very young pup.....I am not sure what age but he was neutered when i got him at 12 weeks. He stills lifts his leg when he pees. He does go on his wee wee pads more often than not though. :) |
I think if you have him neutered before 6 months of age he will not mark. I have had 2 male dogs and they were neutered young but still lift their legs to pee. Neutering also helped get rid of some other behaviour too. |

Has Hefner been around other males? Just wondering if lifting the leg is a "learned" thing, or instinct. Sheila |
I can tell you I have several males and some lift and some squat. And none of mine are neutered. But when a female comes in heat some do mark. |
Let's not forget the girls can be markers too. My girls mark in the house (panties are a must), my boys mark outside..you just never can tell..it's always a gamble..lol. But the earlier you have the altered the better your chances are I would say. |

Hi! Loki was neutered at 6 months and he never learned to lift his leg. He squats, still pees on his front foot once in a while though. He doesn't mark in the house and I haven't seen him mark outside either. So, it is true for some dogs! |

Well, I have two that got neutered at 6 months and they still lift their legs! They're brothers so I guess it just depends on the dog itself, maybe if they could read they would know that that isn't what they are supposed to do  ... |
bunjee was neutered when he was 4 months and 5 days old. he's 5 days shy of 5 months old now. still hasn't raised his legs yet. i'm keeping my fingers crossed. |

2 Attachment(s) I got Logan fixed at 19 weeks. I wanted him done as early as possible because I didn't want him marking and I didn't want him knocking - up his little girlfriend down the street. Before being neutered he never lifted his leg and he still hasn't (he's 8.5 months old now). Right around the time he was neutered he would mark a little by the door when it was my time of the month, but he doesn't do this anymore either. He'll will mark outside a little though, but not all the time. Logan was raised with his dad til he was 7 weeks old and his dad would lift his leg on everything in the breeders house, but Logan didn't pick up that habit thank goodness. I think he learned how to pee from watching my hubby. He doesn't really squat he just stands there and thrusts his hips forward and then looks around like he's peeing at a urinal and doesn't wanna catch a glimpse of anyone elses equipment. My husband thinks he looks so manly when he does this. I just think it's so cute. Logan and the reason we had to get him fixed ASAP |
